Advice on planting?
by maskedmole- 2 replies

I'm needing to transplant a windmill palm tree either to my front or back yard. My front yard is flatter but has a retaining wall in the way. The backyard is pretty heavily sloped so I'm not sure about it. I have a few palms I planted back there but I'm not sure how they'll do. If I plant on the slope, will the palm eventually fall over or have a lot of dirt wash away in the rain? And if I plant on top of the retaining wall, will it push on the wall causing it to lean? Or if the wall ever fails, will it cause the palm tree to fall down with it? How far from the retaining wall should I plant or can I plant right next to it? Also, how harsh would it be to move it from shade…

I am gutted. A 15 yr old jubaea in ground for 8 yrs is seriously ill with what I believe is a fungal infection. Quick background. We have suffered through 2 back-to-back winters with -13.5C minima. First winter (2021/22) I covered with tarp and rope lights over cold period and palm emerged in good form; no problems. Second winter (2022/23) I did the same thing but I was not in a position to remove the tarp for 2 weeks following cold snap as I was out of town and didn't realize it would be a problem (I protected a large chamaerops the same way; it had no issues). During that time jubaea developed a fungal infection that affected many of the outer leaves. I was hoping …

Here is my Sabal Minor McCurtain seedling and I'm wondering when can I expect to see split fronds. As you can see the newest spear looks like it will produce a split frond. There is a total of 5 compete leaves and one has actually popped off so there would have been six.

Aftermath of the Cold/Pimp Slap (Pictures)

Hey everybody, I believe the worst is over for us in the southeast. Although, I did hear about another cold wave coming later on this week, but it shouldn't be as bad as what we've had. In mid January my CIDP got slight to moderate damage from high winds and consistent nighttime lows of below 20 degrees. My CIDP was protected previous to this cold snap with an application of Freeze Pruf (8-12 hours before below the impending freezing temperatures), and a double layer of Frost blankets. The lowest it got down to in my yard was 11 degrees according to an outdoor thermometer I had. My Sabal minor had basically no damage (unprotected) except for a tad browning at the tips of…

Hello, due to the new 2023 zone map, it labels the northeast heights as zone 8a in Albuquerque which I currently reside. In the valley, there are multiple filiferas that have prospered in the colder parts of abq. I was wondering what palms I should try next. I currently have 3 chamerops and 1 sabal blackburnia in the back yard. Thanks!!

Hi, my name is Gabriel, this is a second account, my first account will pop up later in this post. Anyways I went to the zoo the other day and saw all the palm trees there. There is so much palm trees there, there is windmill palms sabal minors everywhere. By the alligator exhibit to the left of the entrance there is a little sabal Minor with seeds on them. By The Monkees there's a giant sabal that is 15 ft tall with loads of seeds on it, mabey a palmetto? Also next to it another sabal with seeds. Currently right now in 2022 they are building a new exhibit and there is a group of windmill palms that I believe made seeds because there's babies under it. I didn't get to take…

Happy Spring to Everyone! This will be the first post to evaluate the winter damage to my palms here in zone 8a on the westside of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The winter overall was quite wet with soil moisture nearly constant from late November through January. Temperatures during this period were cool to moderate with only a few blasts of chilly air, with no days being below freezing. The absolute low I recorded at my weather station was 12F and I reached 15F about 4 times with several more lows between 17 and 20F. Winter was quite short lived thanks to an unusually mild fall with nights below 32 not really setting in until the beginning of December. Rainfal…

Alkaline Soils
by bananaman- 2 replies

Hello everyone! I'm fairly new to palms, and I'm wondering what palms like alkaline soils and can withstand the cold. The house I'm in right now is essentially on top of a giant rock. We have 1/2-1" of nice, rich topsoil, followed by 1-2" of very hard caliche mixed with large pieces of limestone, then there is just solid limestone and chalk. Austin has hot summers and cold winters. In the summer, the average temperature is probably about 95 for the highs, with lots of days over 100. In the winter, it is not too cold, at least at my house. In the past 12 years, we have not gotten below 19 here, and 19° only happened twice. Usually, our ultimate low is 23-ish. The part …

Am I Out of the (Cycad) Woods Yet?

Last Saturday, I received delivery of three plants: a Cycas debaoensis, a C. deb. X panz. hybrid, and a Sabal causiarum, all small, all bare root. I planted them immediately and have been keeping them moist but not soaked. They're in dappled shade under a big live oak. When do I know if they're doing okay? Any tips on ensuring their survival?

An Ambitious Project

I'm in the beginning stages of constructing hugelkultur bed for noise abatement and privacy. The bed will be about 65 feet long and about 5 feet high in an area of dappled sunlight to shade, due to these conditions I plan on densely growing various shade tolerant palms (chamaedorea radicalis, chamaedorea microspadix, Sabal minor, Sabal brazoriensis, and Sabal Louisiana ), Asimina species, ferns and to be determined. The yard is a warm 8A (temperature range of 8F to 112F not including last February) and the area is protected from frost by live oak canopy. My question is what other palms will survive in these conditions, can Sabal mexicana handle shade? Any Ideas for deer r…

Last night, we had an unremarkable (and welcome) thunderstorm that brought down a major limb of the 100-year-old live oak on the south side of my house. When I bought the house, the huge tree was a selling point because, in this hot climate, it not only cast shade on the driveway and half of the house, it created an environment for shade plants. In hurricane Sally (2020), I lost the limb that shaded the back patio and 2nd-floor sleeping porch, with significant damage to the house. The arborist said the remaining tree was healthy and sound. However, last night's storm followed an extended drought and the same arborist said the weight from the sudden absorption …

The more I look at its pictures, the more I find it appealing! I wait with anxiety for the new fruit production. Fortunately it is a female plant with with some male flowers also, so that a handful of viable seeds is secured. It has very stiff leaf blades of orbicular shape, a bit pleated, which are supported by disproportionally long petioles...

Another cold night.

Woke up to 31F the airport 8 miles away had 21F last night. No Morning fog, a sunny day to help warm things up to the mid-40s. So far the plants are still looking good the next few nights are going to be colder I think. My geranium still have flower buds and a block away they are still in full bloom. About the time this mini cold spell is over (by the end of the week) I think the East coast will be getting this cold.
