I'm keeping them in my greenhouse until spring. Just wanted to say keep an eye out for discounted plants! Call local garden centers to see if they have deals this time of year, you might be surprised!

2 headed Jubaea

I had recently been looking at somewhat overpriced Jubaea and discovered this remarkable specimen. Do any of you know of other multi-headed Jubaea especially adult specimens? I've seen this phenomenon before with Livistona chinensis, but I can't imagine what it would look like on a palm with such broad trunks. Now I'm a little bummed that I didn't buy it🤔.

Hello, 20-ft Sabal Palmetto with a spear pull in DFW, TX. Thriving and fast growing before the freeze. Treated regularly with copper. Are there any chances of survival? What do you guys think? Thank you in advance! S.

20/21 Winter predictions!!

What are you expecting this coming winter? Do you rely on the farmer's Almanac, a favorite meteorologist, or have you completely given up on long-range forecasts? Also, when do you start getting your protective gear out for the palms? As for predictions, I always prepare for the worst but I do like to see what's in store. Looks like several sources predict Texas is in for a dry and mild winter (which may have something to do with a moderately strong La Niña effect). For the rest, I check local news every so often for the 2 week weather forecast. If I see we may hit freezing, I'm getting the frost blankets and buckets out (at least for the young palms)!

2023 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Maps Out 1 2 3 4

OK OK we all know the zones have flaws, yada yada but look and see if your zone went up. Click on map or put in zip code for your plant zone. Mine went from 7A to 7B https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/ For noobs the plant zone is used to give a idea of what plants can be grown where you live and it is a 30 year average of the lowest temp recorded for each year. For example my zone is now 7B which indicated the average low over the past 30 years is between 5F-10F. But I had a -1F last year that also goes in that average and might kill some palms. Comparison of 2023 vs 2012 (Newest previous) Map

2024 Freezing Rain and Ice....

Oh geeze guys this is not good... This front moved through Alabama from yesterday evening through the wee hours of this morning and dropped more freezing rain and sleet in my area than snow. Thankfully, I wrapped the blackburniana with a small heat cable and covered the spear/center with frost cloth, as well as the Butia. I however did not wrap the Chamaerops, only with a heat cable. This was the result: Our low last night appears to be 17.8F (at 8 am actually). Low tonight is predicted around 13F. So this doesnt look good. I am concerned about water collecting inside the crown. Here is…

23F Observations
by ahosey01- 4 replies

Hey everyone - In this recent run of cold mornings, we have seen 25F, 26F, 25F and last night, 23F here in Wickenburg. Daytime highs have consistently been in the mid-60s and low-70s. I have a Davis VantagePro 2 that is measuring this directly in the middle of my garden. Some interesting observations (some palms, some not - didn't want to make two threads): Only two plants have sustained heavy damage. One was Beccariophoenix alfredii, which is not dead but which just looks horrible and so I'll probably not be keeping. The other was not a palm, but was Mimosa dysocarpa, which shocks me because it is native to 6000ft+ elevation here in Arizona. I can't qu…

3 different Chamaerops
by BeyondTheGarden- 11 replies

I bought a pair that were field-dug to place on both sides of my steps. My opinion is that Chamaerops are somewhat the "roebelinii" of the hardy world, with their smaller size and multiple curved trunks. Albeit they grow slowly. The one on the left is a normal looking, somewhat silver specimen. The one on the right had a fungal infection from when the rootball sat in the black plastic wrapping all winter. I hit it with copper fungicide and it's pushing clean healthy green growth. But the fronds are like wagnerianus fronds in that they are small and like a palm whose fingers are all closed like a knife-hand. I don't know if this is genetic variety o…

At a house in the SE Jacksonville area. I know the owner so nobody was alarmed haha. They’ve been in the ground since around 2017. I almost thought these were coconuts! They looked flawless even after the deep cold we got a week or two ago.

I planted this palmetto as a seedling about 1979-80 at my parents home in Mocksville, NC in USDA Zone 7b. It has never been protected nor fertilized. It survived the severe freezes in the mid 1908s, but the bud was still underground at that time. The first photo is the palmetto in May, 2018, after the severe winter of 2017-18 in which there were approximately 8 days in which the temperature never exceeded 32F. I'm not sure what the absolute lows were but they were probably in the mid to upper single digits. The fronds were burnt, but not the petioles nor the bud, both of which which remained mostly green. It does have a southwestern exposure with a light, deciduous canopy…

5F Survivors
by NCFM- 7 replies

Well summer is finally coming to an end and I'm pretty happy with how my in-ground palms (and other plants) recovered from the deep freeze we got here back during December. According to Weather Underground it got down to 5f in my town the night of December 24th. Thankfully the rest of the winter was fairly mild, but that low was by far the worst I've seen since the crazy freeze event of 2018. I protected my Butia thoroughly, but the rest were on their own. It was interesting to see how some palms did better than others of the same species, I guess due to microclimates in my yard and/or genetics. Here are some examples of the damage in mid-February and how they l…

Here are the same windmills that i sold in 2016 to an Amarillo customer. Last January they defoliated 100% but never spear pulled when the temp dropped somewhere around -3f. This pic was about a week after they experienced 5f earlier this year.
