Hi, This is my Beccariophoenix alfredii in Tel Aviv area, Israel. I've been doing some research on these palms, and have found they may be a nice substitute for a coco in my 6B/7A yard...anyone grown one of these?? Based on your experience, which is better? Or would the Parajubea torallyi be a better bet? Thanks!

Been a long time.... But..... Question

I used to live in coastal socal. I've even hosted a PSSC event. Probavaly been 10 years since I've posted. I now live in Plano, TX. Got my first Sabal Palmetto sourced here but came from Louisiana. The soil here is a black clay, Houston black clay I believe. Planted it today. It is very mucky and black. Any input on what I should do during the spring and summer months to get it established quickly? They say to water 3 times a week but it is wet and mucky with thunderstorms this week.

Before and After

Don’t talk much about my Needle palm but it’s really grown into a nice three larger, two smaller clump of trunks...three trunks are about 12” and the other two are smaller but it’s gone from about a 3’ high by 2’ wide in-ground experiment in 2014 to a 5x 5 picture of health today...what a fantastic cold hardy palm. Aside from a bit of protection its first winter, it’s faced every winter on its own. Surprisingly, the main trunk died a couple years after planting but the suckers prospered... First winter: Somewhere in the middle: To present: Anyway, sitting at the base of a slight slope, it gets a fair share of runoff and…

Before and after photos...

I've recently picked up a new bike, and I've been riding around the area snapping photos, and that made me wonder how the palms I'm seeing made it through the big freeze of 2021. Then I looked further back and I was surprised at just how fast these can grow, especially given how terrible the soil is in this area (Boerne/Fair Oaks Ranch). The first palm is 2024 vs 2011. The second is 2023 vs 2016! It's very impressive how fast Sabals can grow here. Feel free to add your own photos too.

Before/After Growth Thread!

Hey everyone! My favorite part of reading through these threads is seeing the initial planted picture and then a picture year's later with the palms growth. I was figuring we could gather up a before/after thread for some inspiration coming into the spring season! I posted this in the cold hardy section as I'm in zone 7 so it's more my speed, but any before/after pics in your yard are welcome

Best Cold Hardy Palm Topic Ever

That title was just a trick to get you guys to read this message. Doesn't anyone read the pinned topics? There have been 8 topics so far in this new forum, and only 3 have been tagged. Please fill in the "Topic Tag" that appears after the "Topic Title" when you start the topic. As I have mentioned on several occasions, if you don't, and we close this forum in the future, all the topics without tags will be lost among all the other regular palm topics. If you tag them as "Cold Hardy" they will always be easily available in a separate Cold Hardy list.

Best Collection of Cold-Hardy Palms?
by JasonD- 19 replies

For a long time I've considered Dick Douglas's garden in Walnut Creek, California, as the best garden of cold-hardy palms in California, or at least Northern California. Of gardens I've seen it hits the sweet spot as the most beautifully designed and the one that contains the most cold-hardy species. Most of his palms tolerate or regrow from temperatures below 22F. What other really important gardens comprising all cold-hardy palms are out there? In California? In the Southeast USA? The Mediterranean? East Asia? Australia?

Best cycads for San Antonio/Hill Country?
by fr8train- 1 follower

I live just outside of San Antonio, but it gets a bit colder here than in the city itself. I believe it's zone 8b, maybe even 8a, whereas San Antonio I think is 9a for the most part, with many microclimates. I see the standard cycas revoluta everywhere, and they defoliate but then come back. I was wondering what other trunking cycads might make it here in this climate? I'm not nearly as familiar with cycads as I am with palms, and even with palms I'm learning a lot. What do you all think?

As we're going through another year of unprecedented heat and drought events here in Texas and elsewhere, I worry such events will become more frequent and will also have to become a consideration for planting palms. What palms could tolerate these conditions? I am mostly interested in those who don't support plants with supplemental water, or at least not much. Here's my impression thus far (the short version) after having gone through the 2022 drought (3 months of 100+ max temps with no rain) and being at the tail end (hopefully) of another record-breaking furnace-like summer in 2023. Note that I have no irrigation system and (also given the poor quality of water …

Best Method for Winter Protection?
by ChrisA- 21 replies
- 4.4k views
As summer nears its end, I can’t help but think of the cold weather that is coming. Miraculously, in this high desert, I’ve been able to get a filibusta established to the point that not only can I not protect it so well, but, outside of a freakishly bitter winter, it really does not need the protection. However, I have two young palms, one newly planted this year, which are not robust and established. These need my best efforts for several more years until they are possibly large enough to balk at our average winter. These are a Sabal uresana, planted in 2016, and a new Brahea armata, just planted in May of this year. The sabal received zero damage, under …
