A few pictures of my second largest needle palm growing in MD, z7a on the northwest corner of the garage. Planted as a small palm about 12 years ago. In the past my largest needle has produced many viable seeds, but in recent years my needles have been producing only male flowers. This year this palm has produced a few seeds. Note the old male flowers around the fruits. Most folks think needles are either male or female, but they can produce male, female and hermaphroditic flowers on the same plant.

Rhapidophyllum hystrix after -1.0°F

Here's my largest needle after many cold nights, including a couple of -1.0°F nights, and many days with sub-freezing highs, Also had quite a bit of snow. Yes, that's a pile of snow in front of the palm. ...and yes, it was planted too close to the house as a strap-leaved seedling. (Who knew it would survive??)

Rhapidophyllum hystrix Heat Tolerance

I read tons of stuff about Rhapidophyllum hystrix being super cold tolerant. I really like these palms, and I have a big, empty wall along the south side of my house that could use some filling in. I'd like to plant a bunch of these in a line very close to the house to occupy the space. However - this is the Sonoran desert, I have a stucco house, and it is on the south side in the full, blazing sun. Will these palms take that kind of sun and heat reflecting off the building? Are they fast growers?

Inspired by Frank´s posts about Rhapidophyllum hystrix I decide to show mine. I like this little needle palms! Fifteen are growing here. The seeds came from 3 different sources. They grew relatively fast , specially where well watered. 3 and 4- same palm ( stiffer, dark green collor, wider lealets) 5 and 6 -same palm (round fan, softer light green leaflets)

I took this picture back in February at a BBQ restaurant. This palm has been there for around a decade and it's definitely an impressive specimen. Unfortunately this is the only one that I know of in West Tennessee.

In 2006, thanks to the Southeast Palm Society Hometown Grant (which the SPS gave out every year to plant palm in public places), I was able to plant a bunch of cold hardy palms on the campus of The University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Here are some pictures of the Needle Palms (there were also Sabal minor and S. sp. 'Birmingham' palms planted) right after planting in 2006. Palm #1: Palm #2: Palm #3: And these pictures of the same palms 8 years later in 2014. Keep in mind that this is after a brutal winter where the temperature in Knoxville dropped to -1F (-18C). Palm #1. This one gets full sun most of the day, and has a lighter color…

Hi all Since Alberto showed his beauties, I decided to go on with the world needle tour and show my little babies. It is pretty much impossible to get any larger specimens without being completely ruined. So, to try and see, I firs planted out a tiny seedling in April 2012: It has put out 3-4 leaves every year. We lack summer heat so I'm happy anyway. It has never had any sort of protection. and it's already showing some needles, yaaay. And here's my larger one. Planted in spring 2013. Unfortunately, I have no comparison shot. It's in semi shade.

Rhapidophyllum hystrix in the wind

Hi everyone, I planted this large specimen needle in my yard a few days ago. I get a lot of wind where I live 20-30mph regularly with very few calm days and this spot is pretty exposed. I was just wondering how these guys do in the wind. Also I wanted to get in the ground ASAP so that it would establish better, hopefully not too early with 2 nights at 25f.

I wanted to share a couple of pics I took today of some Rhapidophyllum hystrix seeds from different areas of the Southeast. Of particular interest are the very large seeds, which actually come from a cultivated palm in Gainesville, FL. Of the wild-collected seeds, the ones from Randolph County, GA are significantly larger and darker than the others, followed by Chambers County, AL.

Just my brain going off in Sci-Fi land over here, but I was looking at the classifications of both Rhapidophyllum hystrix and Trachycarpus fortunei. They are the exact same all the way down to subfamily, only splitting at genus. Kingdom: Plantae Clade: Tracheophytes Clade: Angiosperms Clade: Monocots Clade: Commelinids Order: Arecales Family: Arecaceae Subfamily: Coryphoideae Tribe: Trachycarpeae …

Hey! Anyone has experience in growing a lady palm planted outdoors in zone 7? Due to not having enough space inside I will plant my Rhapis Excelsa outside. I have experience in protecting not that cold hardy palms in winter with covering and heating. Few questions I have in mind: What light requirement does it need? What temperature can it outstand in winter? Somewhere I read it can stand -7C° Thanks in advance!

Has anyone else grown these from seed. Wasn't this once thought not to be possible because all the plants were thought to be female? Here is a small one that just grew its first adult leaf. Anybody have anything bigger grown from seed?

I'm planning the backyard garden for the home my partner and I purchased last November, and I'm interested in lining one fence with some Lady Palm (Rhapsis excelsa). Do these do ok in Houston, outside of history-making freezes like 2021? If so, any tips on helping them thrive?

Rhapsis Help

Yesterday, I bought a Rhapsis from a local nursery for $20. He has several healthy plants, but he wants more than I’m willing to pay. Does anyone have any advice on getting this thing healthy looking again? He had it in full sun, and I’m not positive it received enough water. I added some liquid copper Fungicide to the stalks that the spear pulled to try revive any potential life that remains in them. You can see where some of the stalks are starting to push new growth. The roots were exposed, so I covered them with potting soil. I also put it in a shady spot, and sprinkled some slow release fertilizer on it. I believe it’s Scott’s 8-6-8 Palm Fertilizer with nutrie…

Rhopalostylis Sapida Cold Tolerance/Hardiness - Any info appreciated! 1 2 3

So I've been scouring this site trying to find some mention of R. Sapida's, or the genus in general's, cold tolerance. Does anyone have any reports of this palm even having any damage in the cold and at what temperature? What is the lowest temperature anyone with this palm has seen? Also does anyone have info on cold hardiness of the different forms? I'm sure between the members on this board we could get a great idea of how much it can handle, any info is appreciated! If it is true that this palm can take sub 24 deg and survive then I am about to plant a triple! I was thinking of the R. Sapida Oceana - (im not even sure what that means? is that the one with whi…

Rhopalostyllis sp Chatham Islands is very fast growing palm compared to Rhopalstylis sapida . This latter I also have growing here. They survived practically unscathed a freeze that killed some of my highland Euterpe edulis and killed also a mature Chamaedorea costaricana.

Ribbon palm -Houston TX
by NewtopalmsTX- 9 replies

Hello! we just lost our three Queen Anne palms to the recent freeze. We are looking to replace them with some other palm variety that would be more hardy. we visited a nursery yesterday, moon valley, and the ribbon palm caught our eye. It is beautiful but very expensive. (These were quite large, we were told they are 12-15 years old). The cost for one is 3k with includes professional planning and a one year warranty. Are ribbon palms fairly cold hardy in Houston? is this price reasonable? thank you so much for any insight!

Ribbon Palm sale and new addition
by The7thLegend- 2 replies

Over the weekend I was in Saint Augustine and drove by a nursery that had a 50% off palm sign by the road so thought I'd give them a look. They had Chinese Fan, Washingtonia Robusta and Ribbon Fans on sale. Always wanted to add a Ribbon to my collection and so I picked up this 30 gallon for a measly $75, regularly $150. They had some 15 gallons also if anyone is in the area and looking.

Are there any nurseries worth checking out in the RGV that sell more unusual hardy palms that are 15 gallon or smaller? Like Brahea, blue med fan palms, more unusual Trachycarpus etc that don't cost an arm and a leg? I did some searching but not much is coming up.
