Question about Phoenix Sylvestris
by Sandy Loam- 4 replies
- 1.6k views
I am bringing this thread back to life from 2015 because I wanted to ask about a type of Phoenix Sylvestris that I have been seeing lately. Below is a sample photo taken in Gainesville, Florida. I have seen a lot of these in commercial plantings over the past year or so. They look like a regular Phoenix Sylvestris, but they have a slimmer than normal trunk, and fronds which are more yellow than usual. Am I mistaken? If not, could there be some element of hybridization going on here? If so, what exactly? Just curious - thanks.

Question about Sabal Minor Seeds Prematurely Knocked off Stalks
by Scot from SC- 2 replies
Hello everyone! My largest sabal minor always produces many seeds, but this year some birds (I guess) knocked maybe 100 or so seeds to the ground. Most of the seeds/fruit were green or starting to turn black when this happened a few weeks back. I picked up the seeds yesterday, and most of them had turned to black or were on their way. Do you think the seeds are viable if they turned without being on the stalk? Thank you in advance.

Hi, I'm considering whether or not to purchase a Mule. One consideration is trunk size. I see some of them are "fatties" like the ones shown here (about 1/5 of the way down the thread) and then there are more slender trunk Mules like many shown in this thread. Is this variation just genetics, like maybe the slender ones are more "Queen-heavy" in their genetics? Any way to ensure I can be growing one of the more slender varieties? Thanks

Question: problem with European Fan Palm
by racerxrick- 18 replies
- 2.3k views
Hi, First post, I had palms installed around my pool landscape in Dallas, TX four years ago and we just love them! Over the winter my Mediterranean/European Fan Palm had all the leaves go brown. Late winter/early spring I cut the branches/leaves off and discarded. About 30 days ago I became concerned as one of the "trunks" wasn't producing. As I inspected this problem the center pulled completely out leaving it open. At least 30-45+ days have went by and I still don't see any green shoots coming out. I will attach photos. QUESTION: Is there anything I can do? (This is arguably our favorite palm!) Thank you in advance, Rick

Questions about my Protection Method
by kbob11- 1 follower

Hello everyone, I just put up my winter protection yesterday and I had a couple of questions. The biggest one being, will my palms be okay with no sunlight for the next 4 months? I have T. fortunei (right) wrapped with frost cloth with a heat lamp attached to a thermo-cube. The Needle (left) is tied together surrounded by straw / leaves. It has a frost cloth roof with plastic corrugated roofing over it. Can I just leave it for 4 months? No watering / sunlight? There are small ventilation holes in the back of each box and doors that I can open if it gets too warm. Thanks for the help!

Questions about Queen Palms in Myrtle Beach (8b)
by Pee Dee Palms- 2 followers

So last summer I planted a couple of Queen Palms, one on the south facing side of my house, and one on the east facing side of my house (east facing one is more protected but it doesn't heat up as quickly). I obviously heavily protected them both this past cold snap and tried to mainly protect their spears. Overall the one on the south side definitely faired better. I am very shocked at how well it did. The one on the east side did pretty well too, but has much more discoloration. Anyone know why my Queen on the south side did so much better? They both had equal amounts of protection. Could it be that the Queen on the south side is hardier than the one on the east, or is …

Quick seed question

Do I have to remove the thin black layer over the Sabal seed before I throw them around on the ground? Or will that thin layer just fall off naturally? Asking for a friend lol

Quickest way to a free Butia

As I have pointed out in previous threads it is common to find Butia seedlings growing in old leaf boots of mature palms. This one I got this morning from a Butia that also had Sabal seedlings growing on the truck! It must have been growing there for a few years as it's almost growing pinnate leaves. I'm going to pot it up for another year and then plant out.

Quiz, which Livistona would eventually outgrow the other?

If one plants to close two juvenile palms one decora and one australis in a warm mediterranean place (meaning that during actual growing season is dry without artificial irrigation and cool to cold winter) which of them would predictably outgrow some time the other one?

Radicalis next to pool?
by krishawkins- 5 replies

I planted a small palm (c. radicalis) by my pool - a friend came over last night and I told him I had intentions of doing a row of palms by the pool. He told me not do that he knows someone who had the palm roots go through concrete and destroy the pool. Everything I read online says palms can be planted near a pool and the root system shouldn’t be disruptive. What are your thoughts?

Ranking Hybrid Palms in Terms of Cold Hardiness 1 2
by Scot from SC- 57 replies
- 6.4k views
I know various threads exist on this site looking at different hybrids and discussing their cold hardiness. I would love to start one thread where people contribute temperatures their hybrids have experienced and the extent of the damage exhibited. Please list your zone and area if it is not in your avatar since a zone 8 here in South Carolina is a bit different than one in Oregon. Pictures are always welcome too. Thank you in advance. Here is a list of ones I would like to see commentary on: (please add to list if you have information) 1) Butia X Jubaea 2) BJ X B 3) BJ X J 4) BJ X Q 5) J X B 6) J X Q 7) B X Q 8) B. Paraguyensis X Queen 9) Yatay X Queen …

Ravenea glauca experience
by WisTex- 1 reply

Has anyone had experience with Ravenea glauca? Growth rate, cold exposure? I have a 5 gallon one that I am planning to keep potted, possibly planted in a location sheltered on three sides with reflected heat, open to south that could closed off when an arctic intrusion hits Corpus Christi. On North Padre Island lows under 25 are infrequent compared to Corpus, but the accompanying north wind - often in excess of 30 mph completely destroys Foxtails and severally damages Pygmys and Queens.

Ravenea Xerophila

I know that this is a very slow grower and that it has a root that reminds me of a cycad. I also know that despite its name it does not like to be dry all the time and does enjoy being watered regularly. What else do we know about it? Does anyone know anything that is not listed in Dave's Garden or on Palmpedia or in "An Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms". This is a really cool palm in my opinion, some people prefer the other more lush Ravenea but I like this one because it is so different.

ready to give away Parajubaea Sunka....TOO SLOW. Help!
by Sandy Loam- 31 replies
I am so frustrated with my tiny parajubaea sunkha. It is about four years old and it hasn't grown at all. It's literally a statue. It's alive and healthy, but that's the only good thing I can say about it. I am getting pretty close to giving it away for free at this point. Should I hold out longer and wait? Am I doing something wrong? Its leaves haven't even divided yet. It still looks like a large strap seedling. It is planted in a semi-sunny location on an elevated slope. It has received abundant watering from mother nature, and was fertilized about 3 times by me. Where have I gone wrong? Help!

Real Good Looking Cold Hardy Palms
by jvblack930- 35 replies

Hello, I recently visited Florida and I was inspired. I saw all the beautiful Palm Trees, and I wanted one for my home in Memphis. I have some experience with plants, but not much. I was researching what Palms could live here, and I found this site as well with all the information, but, the trees that are options were not good looking at all. Windmill Palm is the worst looking Palm tree I have ever seen, Needle palm looks like a bush and Dwarf Sabal Palm looks weird, and so does Jelly Palm. The only one I might think about is European Fan Palm. But, my real question is, I want some real good looking palms like the tall ones in Florida with nice fan leaves or the feather o…
