Puerto Rican hat palm

This is probably the one millionth question that's been asked about the rate of growth of sabal palms but I just can't help myself. About a year ago, I bought a Sabal causiarum from North Texas Cold Hardy. It was mail order, so quite small. Since then, it's produced a couple of leaves, and is now about 4 feet tall at the highest leaf tip. It's planted among naturalized Sabal minor (the foliage on the left) that are growing throughout the shady areas of my property. This spot gets plenty of light, with dappled shade from high branches of a live oak in the middle of the day. We've had a nice warm, wet summer (nothing unusual for the Gulf Coast) which I imagine has hel…

Can you even buy a pure W. robusta anymore? Every single palm I see labeled as “Mexican Fan Palm” around here has a distinct filifera appearance.

Purple leaf bases: Butia
by Marius- 5 replies

Hi Everyone. I got these two Butias a year or two ago. They were together in a bag, but not labeled. The grower said that they were an unused one but couldn’t remember the species. It now appears that they are two different ones. Or is the purple colour not an identifying feature? The purple one doesn’t appear to have signs of spines but the green one does. Any ideas on what it could be?

Purple petioles?
by Pip- 3 replies
I've had a young Jubaea chilensis for about 10 years and planted in my front garden in 2010. This year I've noticed a stripe of purple in the petiole. I was wondering if this is unusual as there aren't any others at the same stage of growth close by I thought I'd ask here. Sorry about my bad photos but I think they still show what I'm talking about. It is pushing its way out of the parenials and is almost up to my shoulder.

Pushing palms way outside their zones...

Hello, I am somewhat new to growing palms. As many of you know from my other posts, I live near Wichita, Kansas (some sources state zone 6, others zone 7), but the harsh reality is, this is Kansas, and it does get cold here. I have the usual zone 6-7 palms (Trachycarpus, sabal minor), but I also have some Washingtonia robusta, washingtonia filifera, butia, and others. I have had others tell me they have tried these palms in zone 6 and even zone 5 with success, with heavy protection, however, my question is, has anyone here tried something insane, such as growing zone 9-10 palms in zone 7-8? I'm just curious, as I think the coolest part of this hobby is doing something …

Pushing the palm boundaries in Oregon.

I’ve never posted or spoke about these palms before as I wanted to provide the proof. I have seen these for at least 3 years and they don’t always look so good after winter. The other thing that complicated it is that I couldn’t remember where they were precisely located. Today I just happened to drive by them and had to turn around to shoot these videos on at a very busy intersection.

Pygmy Date comeback
by WSimpson- 5 replies

This Pygmy Date had a terrible root system , and then a friend of mine wanted to " help " me bring it outside in the spring and he didn't know how delicate he needed to be in transporting it and it basically fell over sideways . I don't know how it survived ? Well , I fertilized it and gave it some epsom salts and it is now solidly rooted better than it has been in years . I just found out how well it is rooted because I just took off the stakes that held in position for the spring , summer and fall to this point . I really wasn't expecting it to be so well rooted . I would highly recommend epsom salts for your palms . It seems to have been a miracle chemi…

Greetings! What’s happening? Thx!

Pygmy Date Palm
by ThaRage- 4 replies

Just curious if anyone has used the box/green house method with Christmas lights and thermocube for a Pygmy date Palm. I’m in zone 7a Nashville TN. I’ve been successful with several washy, windmill, and dwarf palmettos but just planted a Pygmy date Palm in April of this year. It’s growing like crazy but scared it won’t survive the winter covered. Any thoughts or suggestions? also is anyone else in my area growing palms? Very rare to see any tropicals around here even though our climate really isn’t that harsh with a little TLC.

this might be a stupid question but a few years ago i collected a ton of pygmy date seeds and threw them in my car and totally forget about them until recently. Its been a few years so they've been through a few winters in my car, but nothing below 18F. Is there a chance these could still be viable after this? or should I just toss them?

Queen Arikury Mix?

Greeting! New to the site so hope this is the right place... I'm looking for palms to start adding privacy and came across this palm at a local nursery. The owner was a bit vague on the specs and name so I was hoping somebody might have some insight. Ever heard of a Queen Arikury Mix? Quoted as cold hardy. Looks great. Super wide and deep green. Can't find anything close on the web aside from a Parrot Palm but the palm in question is not small in statue by any means. Cheers!

We had a low of 22-23 on Christmas night, the fronds went 100% exposed while the bud and down was protected. Out of the three, only one seems to be having minor damage. The backyard Queen is so far showing what could be cold damage on the very top of the fronds, not the leaf tips, but jut the top of the fronds in general. It looks strange to me and has just started appearing a couple of days ago. I got some pics this morning, but the lighting was not great, so i will try to get more tomorrow morning and post them. This Queen put on the most robust growth this summer, having put out at least 5-6 new fronds, also fattening up quite a bit as well. I also noticed the Li…

Queen palm frond suddenly falls over. Why?
by Palm and Pool- 5 replies

My Queen palm's newest front went from straight up to straight down. Any ideas? This has happened before, but then it was soon after a freeze, one of the first new fronds to emerge. This time the palm has sent up several new fronds but suddenly the new one snaps in half and hangs down. We had a bad freeze 15F eight months ago, so I wouldn't think that the cause. We had a cool spring and a brutal hot summer and drought, so those are the conditions. I water it every day, sometimes twice. Sometimes I let the water run on it for an hour or so, maybe once every 10 days or so. I hope I am doing something wrong so I can stop! I would appreciate any …
