Planting Trachycarpus in CT
by Tom Ace- 19 replies

Hi Folks, I posted a little while back about a potted Trachy that I was concerned about. I moved it to a different room and it seems to be stabilizing. I'm preparing to plant it out in May and wanted to get some advice. I have seen or read that some people don't ammend soil, and some ammend with sand and/or compost. Some make a very large planting hole and some just make it large enough for the root ball. I even read a bit about installing a drainage grate next to it in order to provide water in winter. I have a reasonably sheltered SW corner of my house in 6B Wilton, Connecticut. One other question would be how far from the walls I should plant it…

Planting zone 8 palms in 6a?

Hello guys, I (will) have these zone 8 palms and I'd like your opinion if it's a bad idea to plant them in my zone 6a (very close to 6b): - Pindo Palm - European Fan Palm - Sago Palm - Mexican Fan Palm (some say it's zone 9, but I've seen it planted and growing well even in Canada) - Saw Palmetto I'm willing to protect them in winter, but if it will be too difficult/too long, then I may leave them potted.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a new neighbor in a newly built house, planted a Butia - a fat one too. Hopefully, he is a crazy palm addict just like all of us.

Please Help ID this palm
by Eric J- 7 replies

Hi everyone this is my first post here I am from Los Lunas NM zone 7a just south of Albuquerque and am interested in growing some palms. We recently took our kids to the Albuquerque zoo where I noticed several palms growing and looking very healthy in the middle of January! Most of what I noticed I think were trachys. Then I noticed this much wider thick trunk palm that also looked really good for the middle of January, and was wondering if someone could tell me what it is . Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone, I’m new to this forum. I’m hoping that someone might be able to tell me if this is a root rot of some sort or insect damage on a couple of Trachycarpus Fortunei seedlings.

Please help: needle palm spear pull
by newtopalmsMD- 1 follower

The first picture shows the newest spear on one of two pups on my needle palm suddenly is no longer green. I pulled on it and it slip up about an inch or two. The second picture shows the some of the leaves of the main plant and the other pup are still green. What should I do. I planted this in April (main plant and two pups all in the same 15 ish gallon pot) and all three plants produced new spears during the summer. Two weeks ago I I put down a little fertilizer that I had used twice before in the growing season (mid autumn fertilizer for needles in this zone is supposed to be helpful) added a couple of inches of black hardwood mulch around the plant being careful …

Please. No Single Digits This Winter.

Here’s the final touches to the palmscape...Medi now has the black frost cloth “shroud“ I’ll unpin and yank down when we hit the teens...the Trachy gets its final layer of frost cloth (already on top of a 3” layer of mulch) so I think we’re good...the Needle palms spent the whole time laughing at my efforts as usual. Hope all had a good Christmas and wishing everyone the very best in 2021.

PNW Cold Spring

Colder than average is an understatement this Spring for many of at least coastal areas of the PNW. Rain totals are up in most areas and hours of sunshine are way down. It's feeling like February most days and I'm loosing Washingtonia seedlings as a result and the ones hanging on are not growing. We had 36°F / 2°C Friday, May 13, that left some light ephemeral roof top frost. Light drizzle and 52°F / 11°C today. Long range forecast has predictions for colder that normal temps thru the end of July.

PNW Palm Sightings

Recently I was driving towards Lincoln City, Oregon and along my way I noticed the Siri and Sons nursery. Driving by a house on that property, I noticed some interesting palms growing. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures because we zoomed past it to fast, so google maps it is! Take a look at the screenshots and let me know what you think. I believe the first photo shows a couple date palms and the second one shows several Washingtonias! Knowing our climate (8b), its constantly wet and cool here which is the perfect combination for inhibiting Washigtonia growth. Yet somehow when I drove by, all of the palms in the google map street view are still there and growing! …

Beginning Monday Nov. 28 forecasters are predicting a polar vortex to move in (PNW) and take up residence for some time thru December. I don't see devastating numbers but much cooler than we've had so far. I haven't checked to see how far southward this extends.

How is everyone feeling about next week\weekend.. Seems like NTX may get spared the worst of it this time around and the lows appear to be higher than the lows we got here in January 2021.

Polar vortex Palms in Portland - First round 1 2
by Chester B- 60 replies

Last night the rain turned to freezing rain as the cold air from the Columbia river gorge met a warm wet system coming off the Pacific Ocean. More freezing rain for me than snow, and we bottomed out at 26F or -3C. Today we'll be around 29F or -1C which is the first day in 5 years we failed to go above freezing. Tonight a much wetter system is moving in and will bring close to a foot of snow to some areas of North and East Portland whereas areas to south (like me) can expect up to 1" of freezing rain. Currently its snowing lightly. As far as protection most palms will be on their own, I threw a few buckets over some small more tender seedlings, and wrapped the g…

First I want to say that the data will also be entered into the Freeze Damage section for individual species. Pictures will be entered with my hand held but discussion will primarily be with laptop for ease of use. Hopefully pictures will be worth a thousand words. First up a ray of sunshine.

Pollinating cycads (coontie)

Hi everyone - I have what I believe are a female and male cone (see pics) from some of my coonties. I watched a YouTube video that showed how to tap the pollen from the male cone, add to a spray water bottle, and then soak the female cone with this mixture. Does anybody have experience and success doing that? Or a different recommended method? I’m also not sure how to tell when the male cone is “ready.” It has just emerged over the last few days and seems to be less far along than the female cone. As long as it’s above ground, is it “ripe”? thanks for any advice!

Ponytail Palm Problem
by jwf1983- 1 follower

Hello, I’m hoping someone may be able to identify the issue with our Ponytail Palm. We keep this guy outside about 10 months, and move inside sometime in December through February. It’s grown very much over the last year and a half that we’ve had it, and we repotted it in April of this year. Everything had looked great until we noticed something looking like yellow and brown burning on the leaves. See photos below… I can’t figure out what is wrong here. We have had quite a bit of rain in our part of town the last 40 days or so. It’s weird, because areas around us have not been too far above normal rainfall, but we’ve had close to or over 20 inches of rain during that …

Afternoon everyone! I found some very tall, full-figured T. fortunei in Portland, OR when I was driving by recently. Well ok, I took the photos in the fall of 2019 so I'm a little late (my apologies). I've attached some photos and the google maps street-view link (which, arguably is slightly dated) here: https://goo.gl/maps/afhGzkTjNrYzEUPQ6 Can anyone guess the height of them? I would love to know. Its inspiring seeing palms this size this grow here. IMG_6999.HEIC IMG_7001.HEIC

Portland suburbs neighborhood tour

Here’s a few pics I tried to take discreetly while walking my dogs at lunch. Our HOA was built in 1993 and is composed of over 100 homes. We’re located in the southeastern suburbs. Most of the palms were planted at a later date. As you can see not much variety but some nice specimens nonetheless. 99% of palms you see in the Portland area are Trachycarpus.
