Backyard paradise in North Texas 1 2

So I've been lurking here and getting involved periodically but haven't officially gotten a chance to say hello. We're just north of Dallas and build our dream pool and backyard last year (still have more to do) and with that, I've always wanted palms.. We are new to Texas, and where we're from (IL) we'd never be able to have much of anything... so here we are! We have a little bit of land so I'm doing my best to add palms where possible. This will serve as my official progress thread as well. We finished the pool in October, and originally planted five Windmills and three Sabal Texana (small size). Lost one windmill during the storm, jury still out on the Texana…

Spring 2021 Update (Zone 7b MD)
by LasPalmerasDeMaryland- 3 replies

Greetings! Here’s a little update on my palms after this icy winter! According to Accuweather, our lowest temperature this year was 19°F 1) Trachycarpus Fortunei ‘Bulgaria’ - this was wrapped in a few layers of burlap. It looks great and no spear pull! 2) Sabal ‘Louisiana’ - this was unprotected other than some dead leaves that naturally gathered at the base. This looks stellar as well and it’s starting to get its palmate leaves! 3) Sabal Minor ‘McCurtain’ - unprotected; super slow but still growing! 4) Sabal ‘Louisiana’ #2 - unprotected and exposed to the elements. This poor palm was buried in snow and sleet. The center spear even looked lik…

Hi I live near fort mill and I’ve been looking for sabal palmettos to buy, but I’m at a problem- I can only buy seeds ( I would just pick them off trees if I was that desperate) seedlings or mature ones. I was wondering if anyone knows a place to buy container palmettos ( 1-5 gallons) for a good price. Thanks.

Best way to water Phoenix sylvestris
by MesquiteRetreat- 0 replies

Back on May 24, 2017 I asked “How much water is too much water for a Royal”. The response was basically, “You cannot over water a Royal”. So, thanks to the input of so many folks, we seriously upped our water and now we don’t worry about him. I also got some great advice about our Sabal. It was suggested that we take him off regular drip and just water him deeply once a month. Wow, what a difference that made! He is now one happy fella and we don’t worry about him either. Now, I have the same question about our Phoenix sylvestris. Photo 1 is from a distance, and I think he looks fine, except for maybe some telltale signs of the recent freeze we got here in Deep …

I was tree shopping today and came across these at a local landscape center. They were labeled Chinese Fan and the owner told me the same but they definitely don't look like Chinensis to me. Saribus maybe? They were all pretty stretched out and top heavy and he was having a hard time keeping them upright. If they're Saribus I might consider one to help fill the empty fence line left behind by my frozen oleander. They're potted now but they were definitely field dug and he just stick them in pots.

Hardiest Archontophoenix Species?
by Pee Dee Palms- 8 replies
- 1.4k views
I have been looking to see what people think is the hardiest Archontophoenix species out there. I am trying to find one that could possibly be hardy to zone 9A or a weak 9B. I have heard some people say it is A. tuckeri or A. purpurea. I am thinking about trying to zone push one of these in zone 8B with a lot of protection. Currently I have one immature A. cunninghamiana that is still just sitting inside. So does anyone know any Archontophoenix species that are really hardy? And does anyone know if I could zone push one of these in 8B with lots of protection?

Needle palms getting out of control
by OhioTodd- 1 follower

Hi, I have 2 needle palms in southern Ohio. They have been out for over 10 years and are thriving. That’s the problem. The largest is about 6 ft tall x 8 feet wide. Very healthy. My question is can I defoliate it and allow it to start over? The leaves wouldn’t reach as far for a few years. I know it’s not ideal care but has anyone done this and would the plant likely suffer serious harm? Thanks!

Picked up a couple of 3yr old Sabal Birminghams and put one in the ground yesterday. Looking fordward to the slow progress on this one, but also great cold tolerance! I'm using this as a progress thread over time. I've got two others that went into 1G pots in the event some of the other palms around my yard don't put out new growth this year from the freeze.. Looking forward to growing this one! Anyone already growing one of these? Thoughts and experiences with them thus far?

Very tall old coconut plus other old coconuts Edison & Ford Estates

I visited the Edison estate a couple weeks ago. besides the many unique, rare and old palms scattered around the estates, I noticed this Coconut in particular. While there were other old coconuts, this one was by far the tallest. Different angle, One on the right. Taller than most royals on the property. Anyone have any ideas how old that one might be? Could it have been planted by Edison like some of the other palms around? Plenty of other old and nice coconuts around too,

I bought this palm in Beaumont TX from a nursery. The owner said it had experienced 6 degrees and was left outside. I paid $50 for a 10 gallon. It had fried fronds but showed signs of life. I was hoping it wouldn’t die but I knew it was a gamble with this palm. I had marked it a few days ago with blue marker to see if it moves and it appears the middle frond has slightly grown. I planted it in its new home here in zone 8b south Alabama.

I’ve heard these are monsters when it comes to armament. I have a corner of the yard that nobody goes to. Thought it would be fun to just stick one of these back there on drip and not touch it and see what it looks like in 15 years. Thoughts?

Ribbon palm -Houston TX
by NewtopalmsTX- 9 replies

Hello! we just lost our three Queen Anne palms to the recent freeze. We are looking to replace them with some other palm variety that would be more hardy. we visited a nursery yesterday, moon valley, and the ribbon palm caught our eye. It is beautiful but very expensive. (These were quite large, we were told they are 12-15 years old). The cost for one is 3k with includes professional planning and a one year warranty. Are ribbon palms fairly cold hardy in Houston? is this price reasonable? thank you so much for any insight!

Needle Palm needs tamed
by OhioTodd- 11 replies

I have 2 needle palms in southern Ohio. Both are over 10 y old. The largest is about 8 by 6 ft high. They are getting too big for the front of our home. I have no place else to move them to. Can I completely deadhead them so they will foliage out again? I presume it would take a few years to get back to their former size. I know it’s not ideal but would it do the trees in? Thank you

Robusta as a privacy hedge
by Keys6505- 10 replies

My lot is kind of pie shaped so I have a long fence line that runs behind my pool and separates me from the big 2 story homes that are only about 20' on the other side of the fence. There are huge, wildly overgrown oleander hedges along this entire fence that gave me 100% privacy on that entire side of my yard. I hated them (messy) but they served their purpose. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing life in ANY of them weeks after this freeze. I'm starting to cope with the fact that I may have to remove them and try to put a new privacy hedge plan into place preferably before the summer. We just got done with the pool and all of the landscaping and palm trees on the rest of…

I’d like to plant a Trachycarpus fortunei in my yard (cheaply). But how young a tree can I plant outside? I live in Central Texas, zone 8b. I have a spot picked out in half to full shade, and I’m planning to make a smallish mound to plant it in, since the soil is heavy clay under about 6 inches of topsoil and drains poorly. It’s Texas, so we have some wind. How young a plant do you think I can plant in the ground? This will be my first palm tree. Any other advice?
