Saw an interesting multi trunk Phoenix today in Destin. Must be a hybrid of some kind. My guess is Phoenix Canariensis and Phoenix Roebelenii hybrid. What say you! It was seeding too, so took a few and will try to germinate them.

North Florida Queen Palms, zone 9a expanding 1 2

Posting this topic in Cold Hardy since it's about northerly zone expansion. Depending what cold hardiness zone map you refer to, the Lake City, north Florida area would mostly be an 8b or barely 9a zone. Lake City is about 30 miles north of Gainesville, FL. Easily found on the map where I10 & I75 intersect... that's pretty darn north Florida. Looking around the area I was surprised to find as many Queen Palms thriving. As a reference, we all know how bad the 2010 winter was and the 2018 winter had temps that remained below freezing for hours! I bought this Trachycarpus early last year and after having it for a while I felt that it may be a Fortunei x Waggie due to its very dark green color and shorter stiffer fronds. I have a waggie planted in the same bed and see a lot of similarities between the two. However this palm grows at lightning speed, easily the fastest one I have producing 2-3 fronds for every one of palm beside it and others planted around the garden. It also has an exceptionally thick trunk that is getting fatter with age. Is it simply the natural variation within T.fortunei or maybe a T. nova, or other? Hey Everyone! First post here. I live 30 min south of Columbia SC. All sandy soil, have planted sabal minor, needles, sabal palmetto, saw palmetto and Mediterranean fans. Was looking to get some advice on whether or not to fertilize. If yes, recommend doing it in the fall? I attached a pic of our soil sample. Appreciate any info/advice y'all could provide.

Anybody growing Trachycarpus Fortunei Winsan? I have one that is about 5 1/2 years old, it is a very fast growing palm it's around 9 feet tall at its tallest leaf tips now. There is not very much information or photos of this palm, I've read that the mother palm has 360 degree fronds but none of seedlings were showing that trait so far. My palms fronds are getting rounder but are not 360 degrees yet. I also read that it is less hardy than regular Fortunei but since I live in Ohio I have to protect it every winter, the lowest my palm has seen unprotected is 19 f. North Alabama (Weiss Lake Zone 7b) Sabal minor?

So I reread an older post today and TexasColdHardyPalms mentioned that there were Sabal minor native to the South side of Weiss Lake in Northern Alabama (which is zone 7b). I went on Google Maps and just randomly went on a street using streetview and I think I found one. But, I am not 100% sure if it is a Sabal minor or is it is some sort of yucca. Do any of you trim the ragged frond tips (yellowed, brown, split). This is mainly on Fortunei. If so do you have any input on palm health of this practice? I usually clip them.

Here is an update on my B x Q. This one was planted as a seedling many years ago and is finally getting some size to it. I haven't had to protect it in a long time. This palm is so much hardier than I would have thought. It is growing in one of my best microclimates between two houses and there's a tall holly tree above to give overhead protection. Not bad for z8a. Although I don't get that cold very often. Anyone else growing this B x Q? What has been your experience? What are its limits when it comes to cold?

Planted this Trachy in January this year. Otherwise looks good, but lately the spears have heen turning brown. The growing point smells very musty as well. No spear pulls yet. They’re still tightly in there. I hand water it (no sprinklers) and never get the growing point wet with tap water. About a month ago, when i first saw dried out spots on an emerging spear, I sprayed it with copper fungicide, but looking at it yesterday it has gotten worse with two newest emerging spears looking pretty bad. I soaked the growing point with copper fungicide yesterday. Considering that this is FL zone 9A with plenty of rain, heat and humid weather still left until…

Hey everyone since this current palm I’m showing which is actually a tad bigger than 7 gallon fronds droop. What causes this. I did not propagate this one. It’s from Florida. I just wonder as the healthy fronds come up. There’s zero brown tips everything’s looks great. Only thing I can say is this palm does take pretty consistent winds daily

Thought I would share some pics of my large Butia that I've had in the ground for a couple of years now in the Portland, OR area. This tree was planted out as 24" box 2 years ago (Aug 1) along with one other specimen. That first winter of 2015/2016 was in the top 5 worst of all time with the other four occurring back in the 40's and 50's. Multiple freezing rain events, almost a week below freezing and the lowest temp I saw was 12 F one night. Aside from that we had record rainfall that year that absolutely saturated everything and caused a lot of landslides and flooding in our area. Here's another palm I purchased from my local palm nursery. The owner told me he thought this palm was around 25 years old and has lived it's whole life in the pot. He told me it was a Takil and felt due to its age that this was the real deal. I think it may be a cross or even straight T Fortunei. The differences with this Trachy and others I have is that the diameter or width and length of each frond is much larger and it tends to grow with more of a open topped vase shape to it. Trunk seems to be of average width and it was growing a little prostrate in the beginning. Regardless of ID it's a real nice specimen. Thanks.

I recently acquired this large Sabal from my palm guy and am looking to see if anyone is able to help me identify it. Sabals are pretty rare in the PNW and when i heard he had one at another location I was able to coerce him to sell it to me. He wasn't sure what type of Sabal it is. He thought a regular S. Minor but another person told him it could be S.Louisiana. As you can see from the photos it's quite large at about 8' wide and 6' high and probably about 4' in depth. The only other one I've seen in the Portland area is in my own garden and not big at all. Sabal's seem to throw only about 2 leaves per year in our climate. Any help is appreciated.

Although I currently live in northern part of South Korea where it is impossible to grow palms outdoor without protection, my father have a parcel of land in Boseong, in the southern coast of the Korean peninsula, and he have allowed me to plant things there. I have a Sabal minor that is too small to plant yet and was planning on planting it next year. I am wanting to leave it inside for this winter (leaving it outside on the coldest nights while in a small pot would kill it) but am wondering if that will effect the cold tolerance of it fo the next winter after this one since it would not be experiencing any true cold. Do you think it will be fine if I leave it inside this winter?

As summer nears its end, I can’t help but think of the cold weather that is coming. Miraculously, in this high desert, I’ve been able to get a filibusta established to the point that not only can I not protect it so well, but, outside of a freakishly bitter winter, it really does not need the protection. However, I have two young palms, one newly planted this year, which are not robust and established. These need my best efforts for several more years until they are possibly large enough to balk at our average winter. Hey everyone. I’ve been trying to germinate 4 species of trachycarpus. I’ve heard and read of so many different styles to germinate. I choose baggie method and I was told bottom heat is ok. But a lot of people have said to use room temperature. So far out of 150 seeds I’ve had 5 germinate. My question really is. Did putting the seeds on a heat mat that was 90 degrees kill or damage the seeds? I mean it does get hot in areas they naturalize ? Or will they still have a chance being back at cooler temps? Side note my fortuneis were fresh fresh and the others not so sure

Parajubaea torrallyii is proving to be very cold hardy and heat tolerant in our hot , brutal central valley summers outside of Sacramento. Has been down to 18 degrees some years back and my parajubaea suffered minimal damage.looks great in the summer despite 100 plus temps for a good part of the summer. Will post some pics tomorrow.
