I've collected these seeds from the tree in the photo. They have been soaked and the seeds on the left have been peeled and the seeds on the right are what they looked like off the tree. Thanks for your help.

Separating big box Livistona Chinesis?

I have three pots of Chinese fan palms from a big box store. Two have fronds as tall as 5 feet, while the third (much younger) has nothing over a foot or two. Each pot has 4 separate crowns. Has anyone tried to separate what appear to be separate plants with any success? Will there be 4 separate root systems, or will there be one root system with 4 off shoots? Are most of the plants likely to die from surgery? If separating is possible and advisable, what is the best time of year to separate them (fall or early spring) I am in zone 7a. (My plan this winter is to leave them in pots (already transplanted to 15 gallon pots) on the south side of my house and move them i…

by PalmTreeDude- 3 replies

This is probably a very basic question, but I have a nice sized Needle palm with a larger center trunk and smaller suckers all around it. Will the suckers ever flower like the center trunk will? If if they do flower, can the suckers polinate the other suckers and trunks flowers and product viable seed? Thank you for reading.

Nothing can kill this palm... 6th year in the ground.. grows a foot a year. Peope cant believe that there real.. However, getting hard to protect... over protected another palm same size.. I opened it up to mold, fungus and severe spear pull...its a goner. this one not a scratch.. I guess planting it close to the house has its advantages.. replacing it with yucca rostrata. We'll see.. good luck to all.. Bobby

Handfull of filifera in a ditch

I have no idea how they got here but these little ditch dwellers sprouted up last year, burned to the ground in the winter, came back up and got weed whacked a few times, went through 65 days with zero irrigation and 110f days and keep on trucking along. This wet September sure has kicked them into overdrive. Got a few rogue bismarckia from a spent seed batch popping up and several sabals too.

Bloemfontein Palm Garden
by Marius- 33 replies
- 2.7k views
My garden is situated against an East facing slope of Grant's Hill in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Bloemfontein has hot dry summers (summer rainfall) and cold winters down to -10 degrees Celsius. My garden's microclimate is more a 9b though. My lowest temperature this past winter was -0.9 degrees Celsius. The flat ( lower lying areas) recorded -9 degrees Celsius. I moved into this house about 3 and a half years ago. The beginnings of the garden was cleaning up and eradicating alien invasive species and weeds. I started in the back and concentrated on South African indigenous plants. Now that that is settled I'm starting to add palms. The front and sides are now onl…

Should I Plant It or Wait?
by PalmTreeDude- 18 replies
- 1.3k views
I keep having this mental debate with myself whether or not I should plant my Sabal minor seedling in the ground now and just throw some leaves over it in the coldest parts of winter or wait for spring. The one thing that keeps making me want to plant it now is that I am afriad that if I do not plant it now and let it go through its first winter outside that it will lose cold tolerance. Any suggestions? Would you plant it now with protection or would you wait? It is a Sabal minor 'Arkansas.'
