First year protection T. fortunei
by JSKeys- 15 replies
- 1.3k views
First year protection for two T. fortunei. I hope they enjoy it since next year they may get a burlap windbreak and after that they're on their own (not counting mulching in the fall). The day started with sleet and it has now turned into snow.

What do you think of my protection method?

Here's how I'm attempting to protect my palms: I wrapped a couple of little filiferas in Christmas lights and attached a thermo cube. I've done this to just the trunk before and it was fine, but in my climate I can expect total defoliation every year. I'm trying to avoid that by binding the fronds and wrapping all the way to the top. Is there any way this will backfire on me?

Exotic looking palms for zone 9a/8b? 1 2

Im on the border of zone 9a and 8b. The USDA map puts me in zone 9a, but I’d feel more comfortable with a palm that can handle at least 8b winters. To me windmill palms and needle palms are not attractive, so those are out the picture. I have a mule palm, but it’s not doing it’s best thanks to my dog who decided it would make a good chew toy. Does anyone have any suggestions for a palm with a little more of a tropical flare than say a sabal palm, but still hardy in my zone?

Please help: needle palm spear pull
by newtopalmsMD- 1 follower

The first picture shows the newest spear on one of two pups on my needle palm suddenly is no longer green. I pulled on it and it slip up about an inch or two. The second picture shows the some of the leaves of the main plant and the other pup are still green. What should I do. I planted this in April (main plant and two pups all in the same 15 ish gallon pot) and all three plants produced new spears during the summer. Two weeks ago I I put down a little fertilizer that I had used twice before in the growing season (mid autumn fertilizer for needles in this zone is supposed to be helpful) added a couple of inches of black hardwood mulch around the plant being careful …

naturalized Sabal Palmetto
by Sabal_Louisiana- 4 replies
- 1.2k views
I have noticed quite a few examples of what appears to be Sabal palmetto (not Sabal minor) growing wild west of its native range, e.g. in SE Louisiana, coastal Mississippi, along the coast of the Fla panhandle E of Panama City. These are usually one or a few and love fence lines of abandoned/vacant lots or wooded areas/ditches along major highways. When young they might be mistaken for the native dwarf palmetto but are unmistakable as they grow up. I will try to post a few pics of some that I have seen. Sometimes, their source can be identified, such as a plant nursery a few hundred yards away.

Help IDing this palm
by Tom Ace- 6 replies
Hi Guys, I came across this plant at a local nursery here in CT. They have a very small section with some tropicals. I saw this and thought it was a Trachy, which got me interested. Asked the girl, she had no idea so I had her check the book. She said they have two types of palms listed that it could be: Chinese Fan Palm or European fan palm. This palm doesn't have any spines but there were two others that did (a feature of the european I thought?) Anyhow, any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Winter protection for small trachy?
by newtopalmsMD- 5 replies
Has anyone covered a trachy in a pile of leaves for the winter in zone 7a as a means of winter protection. It's been in the ground 14 months. Read about this in palms wont grow here but feel a bit funny about burying a live tree (below) in leaves. Any experiences would be helpful. (Last winter a used a cage covered with frost cloth and Christmas lights whenever it got down to 12 degrees F.) Thanks

Fruit on Sabal minor heading into fall
by JSKeys- 22 replies
- 1.5k views
This summer I finally got two of my Sabal minors putting out fruit. All the seeds have firmed up but are still green and aren't fully ripe. Unfortunately we are in fall and while we haven't had a frost yet it won't be long. Will they ripen when we reach low temps and if not if I remove them and let them dry will they still be viable for propagation?

T. Fortunei smaller new growth
by SRJbb99- 5 replies
My T. Fortunei is sprouting new leaves that are smaller than the ones before. I have another one about 10 feet from this that doesn't have this problem but has a negligible amount more shade than this one. It has been in the ground about 3 months, Zone 8B in Dallas. Amended clay soil with sandy loam. Full sun. We've had the wettest fall months on record so that could be a part of it. Thoughts? I've never seen this before

Can my windmill be helped?
by Tom Ace- 17 replies

Hi folks, This is my first real post. I’m looking for any help that is out there. I have 3 potted windmills here in zone 6B CT. Last year, I left them outside too long, probably til December. Nights in the 20sF. Anyway, one of the plants had spear pull. Many of the fronds just pulled right out. I poured peroxide in the crown several times. The plant is still alive, but barely. It has put out 2 fronds since December, and they’re very small fronds. If I look at the drain holes in the bottom of the pot (5-7 gallon), I can see roots and I can see that they’re green. Over the course of summer I have had to prune off many more fronds, as they keep browning. The remaining f…

Any idea why I had this spear pull? Hasn't been colder than maybe 42F. This is the largest of 5 I bought from Cold Hardy Palms and his operation is in the same town as I live. Plant looks good and has done great all Summer. I figure it'll be fine but curious why the spear pull.

Should I be worried about this Canary?
by Jon_Alex- 2 replies

I have a large Phoenix near the front of my house with some kind of trunk injuries about midway up (see photos). The tree was covered in Ivy when I purchased the house (6 years ago). At that time the wounds weren't visible, but after removing the Ivy and old frond bases it became evident that the tree had sustained some kind of damage at some point in the past. It almost looks like mechanical damage at some points and is isolated to one section about midway up the trunk. Some of them look to be a few inches deep. I've never had any problems but am worried about the potential for toppling onto the house! We don't get hurricanes in California but winter does brin…

Does Anyone Know What Variety of Mediterranean Fan Pamm This Is? 1 2

Does anyone know what variety of Mediterranean Fan Palm this is? Does it have a certine variety or are only certain ones recognized as a certain variety? Does anyone know where mine may have ancestors from (Like West/East Mediterranean etc.)? I know I need to weed around it again (center trunk has always been dead and I have not protected this last winter at all expecting it to die, but it survived, I was going to replace it with something else) and I will mulch.

Is Ornamental Palm Horticulture by Timothy K. Broschat a good resource for 8b, upper Gulf Coast (Alabama)? I see both authors are based in Dade County, so I wonder if the focus is on tropical palms. If not this book, is there one that you'd recommend? I've already learned a great deal by perusing and asking questions here, but I'm old fashioned about wanting an authoritative volume for my shelf!

Sabal minor Spear Problem
by PalmTreeDude- 5 replies
- 1.2k views
Hello, I recently reported one of my Sabal minor seedlings, but then spear was brown when I saw it and it seemed to be buried in the soil a bit, which I did not notice. Anyway, I reported it (making sure to keep the growth point higher) and applied hydrogen peroxide to the spear, it did not fizz to much. Do you think it will be all right?
