Clackamas Palms

We have a lot of Trachycarpus palms planted around here but you don't often see much else. To my surprise I was driving on the backside of the Clackamas Town Center and across the street an office building has a few palmy surprises. There were many triple plantings of Trachycarpus with seedlings all around their bases, plus a pretty huge Chamaerops cluster. The Sabals were a grouping of three as well and had seed stalks from last year full of seed. Do you think its still viable? I grabbed a couple and crushed them between my fingers and the outer husk fell away but inside were small hard seeds.

Nannorrhops ritchiana in the PNW?
by Chester B- 2 replies

Any growers of Nannorrhops ritchiana in the PNW, or an area with cool wet winters? I have access to 1 gallon green and blue forms $12 and $16. The minimum temperatures here will be no issue for these palms, but will these melt in my wet winters?

Sun exposure for Trachycarpus in zone 7a

I am planting several Trachycarpus fortunei (and maybe a takil). I have read everything from, plant in full sun, to plant in afternoon shade, to prefers shade but tolerates sun. I am looking for advice on where to plant the Trachy's. I am in 7a in Maryland north of DC. Humid hot summers, cold wet winters and a micro climate with a min temp that may be a bit colder than 5F. Any experience with siting Trachy's in these conditions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Anyone know how to tell what kind of Sabal?
by knikfar- 31 replies

Hi all, The attached photo is of an unknown variety of sabal palm that I picked seeds from this past weekend. The tree is located in Winterville, NC, zone 8a and survived the brutal winter of 2017/2018 when temps were below freezing for a week. One night the low temp was -4 and it was 1 degree f on another. This tree survived and it's clearly not in a protected area. So I'm inclined to believe its a Sabal Bald Head Island. I collected over 200 seeds and I plan to try and germinate them but I'd love confirmation on the type of Sabal it is. Anyone know of a place where I could get one of the seeds tested to find out? Also, if I can get the seeds to germinate, I p…

I figured I would start a new topic giving an update on some of my palms and other things growing in a Virginia garden. Now that I've had a little more free time, I've been catching up on quite a bit of weeding and such. It's still a work in progress. Hopefully, I can get the photos to load. Ever since getting a different phone I've had some difficulties uploading photos, so trying the computer.

Special JuBu 1 2

So we bought this hybrid about 10 years ago as a JuBu. Seemed more BuJu in form, but didn't think much of it. It's still regrowing its crown. Hasn't flowered in two years. I was looking at it today and realized a few special things: 1. It survived 8F unprotected. 2. This palm sets viable seeds all on its own. Yep folks, self fertile viable seeds. There's not a mature Butia for miles.

Chinese fan palms as die backs

Hi, Separating (partially) some big box Chinese fan palms and planting them as die back in zone 7a. Some are about 2 feet tall to frond tip, and others have petioles that are 4 feet with pretty big fans. Should I expect the smaller plants to never really get any bigger than they are (kind of like hostas)? Should I expect the big ones not to regain their petiole height but continue to produce large fans? (Just thinking of where to locate them) I assume there is no special care for these things. Just lots of water (especially since its July!) and slow release palm fertilizer? Then after the really cold weather starts cut them to the ground and cover with leaves…

Good Evening all, Im new here and just would like some feedback on everyones experiences with this species. I have 3 specimens, all purchased from LOWES in the blue pots (you know the ones). 1 is about 2 yrs old (meaning I've had it for 2 years). Last winter I kept it inside in a roughly 10 gallon pot. Over the last year it has grown well, albeit slowly. The other two I purchased around april this year and are smaller. After relandscaping my entire property I decided to plant all of these in select locations. I am in Calera, Alabama, zone 8a I believe. They are all planted in a south facing back yard, and get 8+ hrs o…

Sabal x Brazoria?

I purchased this a few years ago as a Brazoria from a nursery that had many kinds of Sabal (ecotypes of palmetto & minor, green uresana, and brazoria) all mostly strap leaf in 3 gallon, not labeled but separated into groups. I was directed to the Brazoria, picked one up and was on my way. Now a few years later and my plant has palmate leaves, I'm thinking maybe I grabbed one of the minors that got accidentally placed with the Brazoria? I think they maybe had Louisiana and some eastern nc giant type? I don't remember exactly but here is my palm. It usually holds 6ish leaves (most were shredded or crushed in hurricane last year), they are not ver…

Hi Everyone. I found this beautiful old Sabal minor yesterday at a garden center in a small Free State town. It was the only one and they didn’t know what it was. They had a couple of other common cold hardy palms too. I got it for the bargain price of USD32. It is an adult plant as it is seeding.

where can I get a sabal brazoria of any size?

I have spent a lot of time on line looking for a brazoria and have not found anything larger than a .7L pot. Are these simply not available in any size? I am in zone 7a and am looking for a sabal that will have some height and won't require protection other than mulching (I already have sabal minor, needles and trachy's, plus some Chinese fan palms that I will try to grow as die backs) thanks

Early Summer Garden Pics
by Chester B- 19 replies

After a pretty dry spring we had our first major rainfall in a while. Over the last day and a half I recorded 1.5" of rain. It's amazing how things perk up, even though I have been watering all along. I started work on this garden in the spring of 2017 so it is entering its 3rd year now, and finally starting to look more filled out. All that remains from when we first bought the house are a few sword ferns, the mimosa tree and some clematis. The soil is heavy clay and in the winter is quite waterlogged so I have been trying to raise up the beds, improve drainage as well as use plants that can handle these conditions. I still have a lot more work to do, and will begi…

Can I blow up large root balls for easier removal?

I lost many large pindo palms during record prolonged cold in Jan, 2017 here in central SC. I've licked my wounds and now want to replace them with new pindo palms next April. My problem is they're planted in areas that aren't heavy equipment accessible, and I don't know how to get a huge, extremely heavy rootball out the ground by myself. I came across an old thread on a palm forum in which someone suggested blowing up a heavy rootball with dynamite. I quickly learned I can't buy dynamite, but I can buy an explosive used in target shooting called Tennerite. Has anyone ever heard of using explosives to shatter heavy rootballs? All suggestions appreciated.

Phoenix x (palm ID)
by Estlander- 3 replies

Anyone know what cross this might be? It’s obviously Phoenix of some kind. What throws me off is the thickness of the trunks. It’s a suckering one so I’m thinking Phoenix Reclinata, but leaning heavily towards Canariensis. Normally Phoenix Reclinata crosses have thinner trunks. It’s in Destin (coastal FL panhandle).

Ohio palms?
by clevelandtropicsmaybe- 6 replies

I've done a lot of research and have gotten few promising results but does anyone think there are any species of palm trees that can survive in the ground in NE Ohio? If anyone in Ohio has seen or knows of any that are already planted or has any pictures, that would be very helpful. I live in zone 6b because lake Erie is less than 1 mile away and warms up the cold air a little bit, but it can still stay below freezing with snow for long periods of time. The 2 best options that I'm aware of so far are needle palm and sabal minor.

I'd love to find a variety of Sago palm that will survive Raleigh winters. I've read about Cycas taitungensis and it's extreme cold hardiness so I've ordered a pack of five seeds. Does anyone have experience with this variety of sago or other varieties here in Zone 7B?

Trunking palm for Raleigh, NC?

We have a lot of windmill palms here in Raleigh. But I'm not a huge fan of their fuzzy trunks. So I've been looking into three alternatives. They are Sabal Birmingham, Louisianna and Bald Head Island. I've heard the BHI is marginal here and the Birmingham will take 30 years to develop a nice trunk. Does anyone know about Louisianna? Will it form a trunk fairly quickly or will I have to wait a decade?

Sabal Minor seeds finally germinated

Well, I purchased 100 Sabal Minor seeds last May on eBay for 10$ from Dallas. I peeled them and put them in a seed tray with little pods. Nothing happened over the summer. During the winter one spontaneously germinated somehow in my cold garage. I had almost given up on the seeds this spring. Since warmer weather was coming I just put them in a plastic bag in my greenhouse. To my surprise two weeks later about 10 germinated. Then the next week 4 and today I found 16. So happy they finally grew and now I have 30 which are already potted up and some are peaking out of the soil. Next spring many will go in the ground.

I got these seeds from Rarepalmseeds a couple of months ago and they have finaly began sprouting. Anyone confirmed if they are as cold tolerant as rps says? on the site they where supposed to be able to take -22°C / -8°F but that could be in dry climates only. The only palm i have germinated before was Washingtonia robusta but for me most of them died during winter at -6°C 21°F. We can get fairly wet winters here so any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone else germinated these or similar varieties what were your results?

Fertilizing needles and sabals in zone 7a

I have read not to fertilize palms in zone 7 after july 4. (Needles, sabals and trachy's) I have some palm fertilizer with a three month release time. Can I use this in June? or should I find something with a shorter release time. (I used up my 6 week release in early May) I assume that fertilizer timing is not an issue for my butia and Mediterranean fan which are in 15 gallon pots and will spend particularly cold days in a 40-ish degree garage? Thanks
