I had 12 palm trees planted in my yard about 3 weeks ago. Within days 4 of the palm tree fronds started turning brown as well as the center bulb in two of them. The remaining 8 had some mild browning of the lower fronds as well. Need help on what to do next. I have gone around each bulb and pocked around with garden hoes and there was no obvious air pocket. I am watering them constantly using a drip system and every night creating a puddle of water using garden hoes. The fronds turned brown so fast that it was hard to believe.

Different palm suggestions for Houston 1 2

Hi all, I'm new to the site and new to palms in general and was hoping that some of you would lend your expertise. I recently moved from NJ to TX and have a lot of interest in boosting my new palm collection. I live in League City which is about halfway between Houston and Galveston. I'm rated 9a but I averaged out the lowest temp in League City each winter over the last 10 winters (based on available online data) and I got 29.5 degrees which would be closer to a high 9b if I'm not mistaken(?). The lowest temp recorded here over that span was 20.3. My first order of business when I arrived was completely re-doing my yard with a pool and all new landscaping so I jam…

It has been through 2 winters and it would be interesting to see how these palms stood up. Judging from the stilts they look recently planted. The pool and the surrounding concrete look like they create an excellent microclimate. I could see these making it through a freeze down to potentially 0F when they're full…

I'm in 8b and am mulling over the idea of adding some rhapis to my landscaping. Is it worth a shot or a waste of time? Most winters here are 9a+ As always many thanks

Trunk size inquiry

Plotting some beds out for development and was wondering about trunk size of Sabal minor & Brahea moorei. i know they aren’t “trunking” but I understand Sabal minor at least does grow a subterranean trunk, how much space would one need to account for things like patio / sprinkler pipes / retaining walls, etc? my searching leads my to pictures of trunking specimen.. one area is going to be full sun, that’s why I’m looking into Brahea moorei, as I prefer the look of more shaded S. Minor

New House, New Yard
by ahosey01- 27 replies

I was inspired by @DAVEinMB's thread about his landscaping progress, so I thought I would do something similar. As time passes and progress is made and plants put on new growth, I will update this thread with photos. I recently bought a new house in Wickenburg, AZ which was built on a lot that had been abandoned and empty for about 15 years. At one point there had been a house here, but it was torn down by ADOT in 2006 and then they never did anything with the land. I am down at the bottom of a valley near the river, so it will probably get to 19-20 at least once per year in the early morning - probably only for a few minutes until the sun crests the horizon. …

These palms are 10 years old now, with the current image in the lower right corner. They have gone through a winter with a low of 11F and a summer with 70 days above 100F. Unprotected, not irrigated, no fertilizer. Texas tough.

Chamaerops Humilis roots exposed and peeling bark
by Texas Pete- 10 replies
- 1.2k views
Good afternoong everyone. First post to this forum so far! I bought a chamaerops humilis compacta and planted it. However a few days later I have noticed roots becoming exposed and also some bark peeling off. Seems fairly level in the soil, but the original pot it was in was a bit root bound and pushed up. Is this part of the growing process, or is the plant having some sort of issues? I have watered well but not with any undue force. Should I be worried. The plant was fairly potbound when I bought it, but I did the usual stuff of watering the root ball, gently teasing roots and so on. Any help would be appreciated. Seems to be decent growth at the top, nice and…

Finally a Sabal Birmingham
by trachyman- 7 replies

Here is my S. Birmingham I've had now for about 1 week. I wasn't expecting this thing to be this big so I really didn't have any decent tall pots for it but his 3 gallon will do in a pinch. I saw that it has the saxophone growth so I was careful not to bury it under the soil surface, but there is lots of white flesh above the soil line that has me a bit concerned. Should I add more soil and sliightly bury the saxophone to cover the white or what? Any other advice for optimal growth with this baby?

Are You Nuts? You can't grow palm trees here!

Howdy Folks, So through many experiments from so called "zone pushers" and the unforeseen cold snaps in recent years in places such as ST. George, Utah and the polar vortex affecting 49 states, plunging even south Florida into the 20s, we know palms of all varieties are much more cold hardy then once thought. So I'm interested to know, who out there lives in places where palms "Don't grow" or where conventional wisdom tells us they're not supposed to grow. There's a LOT of tales out there from folks who live in palmy climates like Southern Arizona or the Carolinas zone pushing with coconuts or other extremely tropical plants. That's not the purpose of this particular…

USDA hardiness map shows only the southern limits of Kentucky lay in 7a, although large portions of the rest are in 6b. I noticed Louisville and Lexington geographically fall here and with the well-known help of urban heat island/canopy/ body of water it could be possible to to grow Trachy’s/needles/s. minor in this area without protection, provided they’re established. Had anyone here seen this pulled off?

Cycads?
by ahosey01- 1 follower

EDIT: I think this post should be in the "tropical looking plants" forum. How do I move it? I have two spots on each side of my driveway that need to be filled with something. I don't want something particularly large, because directly behind those spots are a Phoenix canariensis and a Phoenix dactylifera. They are the red circled spots in the pictures, here: My thought was - if possible - I'd like to plant some cycads here. Only challenge is, however, I am in Wickenburg AZ and these would be in full sun. It also gets cold every year down by my house, with lows between 18 and 25 reliably expected at least once annually. Any species sugges…

I see different posts with different colors. I wonder if it's either genetic or if the environment plays a role, similar to some blue cycads.

I spent last week on vacation down at our families beach house in Emerald Isle, NC. The island sits right on the 8a/b border, and is absolutely littered with Palmetto and Butia. Sagos and European fan palms are also very common plantings. Windmills are present as well, but most don't look very good - I'm not sure if this is due to the sandy soil or extreme heat. Sabal minor is the only palm native to the island, and can be found in the maritime forest as well as used in landscaping. There is actually a distinct native variety present called "emerald isle giant" that is known for its larger than average fronds. While Sabal palmetto is not native, the Florida transplants th…

Canary Leaf Opening
by ahosey01- 7 replies
Wondering if it is normal for my canary palm to open its leaves very slow. I don't know much about palms yet. This was taken Saturday morning: And this was taken about 10 minutes ago: That leaf that is opening pretty much looks the same in both pictures. Is that normal? When my Phoenix dactylifera opens a new leaf, it takes about 4 days from the first sign of opening until it is fully opened.

How to create hybrid palms

Hi all, I'm sure this question has been asked a thousand times but I'm coming up empty on my Google sleuthing. Does anyone know what the rules are about what kinds of palms can be hybridized with other types of palms? Can palm shaped frond trees be hybridized with feather shaped frond trees? Has anyone tried to hybridize a needle palm with a date palm to create a super cold hardy date palm looking tree? Or maybe a windmill palm/pindo hybrid to create a more cold hardy pindo variety?

Chamaerops Humilis Planting Question
by trachyman- 1 follower

I have a small Med Fan Palm I want to plant into a raised bed where I have several other palms doing very well for years. The rasied bed is approx 16-18 inches tall and pretty loamy. I have had a Med (cerifera) in this location before but died in a normal Z8b winter the first year in the ground. I had another Med (green form) main stem die that same year in a other location it's first year in. Luckily once sucker survived and is recovering nicely today. My question is should I put some gravel into the back fill to improve drainage? I want to make sure rain in winter doesn't hang out near the root zone in case that was the cause of death for the last two. Also wha…
