I decided to create a Journal to share over time for these with culture and temperature data over their lifetime here in 8a. I placed my order for these on April 19th 2020. They shipped April 21st, and arrived today April 23rd. These are 3yr old Syagrus romanzoffiana var. 'Litoralis' seedlings in 4"x4"x14" tree liners from MPOM stock parents I believe [forgot to ask but have sent out an inquiry] that are used in hybridization. Michael has been easy to work with, keeps good communication, and I have received what I have ordered quickly. 1 seedling will be planted 1 seedling will be potted 1 seedling will be given away in…

What are my trachys doing?! 1 2

So we planted four 30# Trachy Fortunei last October at the completion of our pool project.. They were beautiful until, well we all know what happened in February... They are browned out (petioles are generally all green) fronds not so hot on all of them, but things are pushing and I have some hope of them recovering (I hope being the key word). I started noticing just recently the base of the trunk starting to look like someone after Thanksgiving where their belt is starting to get tight and they grow horizontally... Are they growing in girth, which would indicate growth upward at some point? What are my trachys doing?!

Ranking Hybrid Palms in Terms of Cold Hardiness 1 2

I know various threads exist on this site looking at different hybrids and discussing their cold hardiness. I would love to start one thread where people contribute temperatures their hybrids have experienced and the extent of the damage exhibited. Please list your zone and area if it is not in your avatar since a zone 8 here in South Carolina is a bit different than one in Oregon. Pictures are always welcome too. Thank you in advance. Here is a list of ones I would like to see commentary on: (please add to list if you have information) 1) Butia X Jubaea 2) BJ X B 3) BJ X J 4) BJ X Q 5) J X B 6) J X Q 7) B X Q 8) B. Paraguyensis X Queen 9) Yatay X Queen …

Finally! A Needle Palm 1 2
by Manalto- 57 replies
- 7.4k views
Today I planted a nice Rhapidophyllum hystrix that I got from my local nursery here on the Gulf Coast. It was in a 15 gallon pot and it's got about a foot of trunk. I chose it because all the needle palms were growing in the same conditions (high overhead canopy) and this one seemed the most robust and open in habit, which I attribute (erroneously?) to seedling variability. It now occupies a position of honor where I can see it from the back door. I've wanted a needle palm since I learned about them in 1992 from Dr. Lawrence Crockett, my horticulture professor at The City College of New York. He brought in an article from the New York Times introducing us to this remarkab…

Anyone try these Super cold Hardy Mules? 1 2

The cross goes like this... Butia x Jubaea x Butia x Syagrus. Palms are being developed by Moultrie Nursery in St. Augustine, Fl. Has anyone tried this super mule? Cold hardiness has not been tested but they are saying super cold like 7b is not out of the question...WHAT? That sounds too good to be true! What type of Butia and Syagrus are they using that would produce such a cold hardy mule. Hmmm?

I just ordered a Trachycarpus Fortunei "Taylor" from Plant Delights Nursery. They are listed for 7b but reports are that these palms can endure much lower (official low has been -8F, yes, that's minus...). https://www.plantdelights.com/products/trachycarpus-fortunei-taylor-windmill-palm Does anyone here have experience with it? Still a long ways away from placing any of these palms in ground, but I'm planning now-never too early I suppose! Ha. First, I know being in an 8A is a stretch for any 9A palm, but just wanted some advice for how I should place these palms in my backyard when the time comes. First, I've read up the basics on both of these palms. My question is where I should plant these palms and what would help in terms of their placement. For instance, I have a great spot up against my house that faces east. Winter time it gets less than 2 or 3 hours of indirect sunlight. In the summer time, sunlight time increases a bit, but still mostly indirect sunlight (as it shines through seve…

Spanish Moss in Nj 1 2

I got this Spanish moss from Savannah just this week. Put it on an overhanging broadleaf oak and a bald cypress in the front of the house. Didn't put too much on that one as I heard deer may eat Spanish moss. I plan to take the moss in only when it gets below 10 two or three times a year. I will leave some strands out to weather it out. Does anyone know the min. temp that it can take? P.S sorry for the photo spam.

Growing palms in San Antonio, TX 1 2

I was wondering what lessons were learned after the big freeze back in February 2021. I see many businesses replanting Washingtonia Robustas instead of Filiferas but I also see a large number of Sabal Mexicana/ Palmetto being planted as well. So what kind of palm trees would you like to see more in and around San Antonio? Is there a way we can get them planted more frequently along highways and other public roads ? Maybe talk to city department that's in charge of landscaping? Your thoughts please .

Engineers of PalmTalk 1 2

Not sure if there are any engineers or hobbyist that like tinkering with things or creating things.. but I have had an idea the past year in my head and wanted to see if it can come to fruition. Basically, I want to make an outdoor solar powered air heater that you can place around a palm tree. In theory, it would have a vent that blows air up, pushing it towards the crown of the palm even though it is on the ground. I can't seem to find many, if any, products online that are outdoor solar powered heaters. If anyone tinkers with things or specifically tinkering with solar, please let me know if we can experiment this. If possible - imagine the zone…

Starting a Washingtonia from seed 1 2

Hello palmtalkers! I've already had some experience of germinating Butia and now I'm starting my second palm from scratch - Washingtonia, possibly a pure filifera. This is a motherpalm, located in Termez, Uzbekistan. This Washy is 13 years old and it's fruiting for the first time this year. At age of 6-7 it managed to survive an extreme cold snap in february 2014, with a low temperature of -22C (-7.6F), the lowest recorded temperatures in the whole region, and continuous 168 hours of subfreezing temperatures, this is what makes this specimen interesting. These seeds arrived to me Cleaned and soaking in the water

Most Cold Hardy Butia? 1 2
by sevapalms- 55 replies
- 5.2k views
What is the most cold hardy Butia palm for a wet year round, cold/cool winter and hot summer climate? I normally get down to around 12-14 degrees Fahrenheit every year, but it gets much colder into the single digits sometimes ~every 5-10 years. I am willing to protect my palm. I live in coastal southeastern Virginia, if anyone knows specifics about this area.

The #1 Main Contender for Cold Tolerant Dypsis Champion of the World! 1 2

I know among the Dypsis that we are currently growing in cultivation that Dypsis Decipiens is the cold hardy champion, but who is second in line? Is it Ambositrae from the same habitat? Or would you place a clumper in the runnings such as Onilahensis or Baronii? What about Dypsis Saintelucei; I have heard some really great things about it as well. What say you ladies and gentlemen? I am sure there are many more that can be added to this very meager list.

northern limits for cultivated Sabal palmetto (in the eastern US) 1 2

All those postings about the VA Beach Palmettos made me wonder. By my reckoning, I would say marginal from the southern tip of the Delmarva south and west to Raleigh to Charlotte to Atlanta to Birmingham then to the Mississippi Delta to around Texarkana. Perhaps even a little north of this in favorable microclimate such as urban Little Rock and Memphis. In other words, corresponding with the northern limits of CHZ 8 or wherever Sabal minor would occur naturally. LA and FL would be the only states where it can be grown anywhere but MS and SC would come close. Does this sound about right?

Surprise survivals of Xmas freeze 2022 1 2

So there has been plenty of talk about this polar vortex. I figured now would be a good time to talk about the survivals. At my house none of my palms are established as I have only been in this house for 18 months now. This was there first winter in the ground and was exactly the weather I was hoping to avoid. We had an ultimate low of 17° per my weather station. No precipitation or frost which I believe made a huge difference in survival. All of my palms in the front yard got the same protection. Wrapped with a moving blanket with its fronds tied up. One small Cham Cat got the 5g bucket covering. All the Patric Hybrids survived with maybe a lil leaf burn that was expose…

I'm curious how mule palms faired during the recent record cold week in the SE US. Temps at my location dropped to 12f twice in one week, with highs in the 30s. For those who experienced similar temps, especially in the Carolinas, how do your mule palms look? I'd love to hear from you. Thanks.
