Toppled Mule 1 2

I'm not at the house at the moment but my neighbor sent me this photo of my mule palm that has been in the ground about a year. I guess it had blown over in the wind. He staked it for me. I noticed, the last time I was there and working in the yard, that it was wobbly. It's in the shade in the early morning but gets full sun for the rest of the day. Are they known for having weak root systems? Any suggestions?

Armata vs filifera cold hardiness 1 2

Hi everyone, I am wondering which palm species is more cold tolerant: Brahea armata or Washingtonia filifera? Looking at these bluish/white wax covered leaves of the armata one could think it would cope better with low temperatures. On the other hand washingtonia filifera has a much more northern natural range and there are some crazy "come back to life stories" from the texas freeze in2021. So it would be great if you could report on your experiences and opinions about these species. Thanks in advance!

yatay x jubaea F1 1 2

I have this little yatay x jubaea F1 from patric shafer, probably from Dick Douglas Garden. It is showing signs of a yatay blueish tinge. This might be an advantage of this cross, but I have two and only one shows the blue at this time.... I don't need a palm this cold hardy, but I want it anyway, LOL! I will find a spot for it if I have to clear with a chainsaw, LOL! these are not so easy to find, I don't know anyone other than patric who offers this hybrid.

San Antonio River Walk after 2021 freeze 1 2

I debated whether or not to start this thread... those of us in Texas and other U.S. states hit by the severe winter freeze last month have certainly seen more than enough dead and damaged palms. But I have always been curious how large public plantings of palms and other subtropical/tropical plants respond to these historic freezes, and there is often little photo documentation. For example, I wonder what it looked like at Disney World in Orlando, Florida after the 1989 freeze. https://allears.net/2017/06/26/when-a-hard-freeze-hit-walt-disney-world-in-1989-cast-members-turned-to-faux-plants-along-jungle-cruise/ Although absurd, in my mind's eye I some…

Super Hardy Washingtonia in Fayetteville NC 1 2

This Washingtonia was planted at 944 Bragg Blvd, Fayetteville NC sometime prior to 2007. That's the furthest back Google Streetview goes. In the at least 15 years since it was planted, its experienced multiple single digits, low teens and even at least one drop to zero degree F. Until sometime between 2019 and 2020, it did have a single story commercial structure behind it. But considering that building was only a single story, I'm not sure how much of a microclimate it created since this palm has long grown higher than a single story. Judging by years of streetview images, none of the plantings around this palm appear to have ever received much care. So I highly doubt an…

Finally found the Jubaea x Queen, for anyone interested! I know I heard some people say they were looking when I originally posted about this hybrid. But there is a very limited supply found by a trusted resource. 20gal, only 10 of them, likely the last 10 and 7 still available. Hoping to help this individual fill the orders. I can PM the contact, to serious inquiries, as this is a collectors palm and priced accordingly. edit: this is in the PNW area (Seattle)

Texas Queens Palms After Freeze 2021 1 2

These are alive. Mine had made it though 14.5 but are dead. Looks like 2 in Sugar Land lived through low 10s. He is using Silver Queen and Litoralis as the same. They are not, Also how does he know what they? He should state their background. Most likely they are what was termed silver queens. If they are 30 years old, they may have been from offspring that survived in the RGV, Laredo or north Florida. Those were the silver queens. I had those, I had plants purchased from the RGV. My Litoralis were recent introduction ( Late 2000s) and I got my seedling from Jeff Marcus. I still have a 15 gallon Litoralis, and I have seeds from this past fall from my Silver Q…

Large Washingtonia of Albuquerque 1 2

Hello All, After seeing the google maps post with the address of some large palms in Albuquerque, I was compelled to drive over as soon as I got the change. At this location there are 3 palm trees that have been there for quite a while. I am not sure when they were planted, or what kind of protection they have gotten. According to the weatherunderground website a nearby weather station has recorded a low temperature of 16.4 on 12/8/17. This is the same lowest temperature I've seen at my west side house this year as well. Most fronds are still green, the only outright dead fronds are those that have expired as part of the aging process; those lie folded dow…

Polar vortex Palms in Portland - First round 1 2

Last night the rain turned to freezing rain as the cold air from the Columbia river gorge met a warm wet system coming off the Pacific Ocean. More freezing rain for me than snow, and we bottomed out at 26F or -3C. Today we'll be around 29F or -1C which is the first day in 5 years we failed to go above freezing. Tonight a much wetter system is moving in and will bring close to a foot of snow to some areas of North and East Portland whereas areas to south (like me) can expect up to 1" of freezing rain. Currently its snowing lightly. As far as protection most palms will be on their own, I threw a few buckets over some small more tender seedlings, and wrapped the g…

My Jubaea X Butia F2 Hybrid 1 2

I bought my hybrid from Jungle Music back in June of 2011. It was smaller, in a tree pot which I think might be a three gallon size. It has been in the ground for three years and two months. The growth of it is very fast. I would put it on par this year with a fortunei or faster. The trunk is really getting thickness to it.It is not only faster than a butia, but it seems to take less damage in the winter. It sailed through the coldest night here back in January; it dropped to 10F that night. I did have a frost cloth thrown over it, but it blew off sometime that night. The cloth was over halfway off, and the palm was exposed. I highly recommend this palm! Here are pictures…

Back in November of 2016, my fiancee and I embarked on a six hour road trip to McCurtain County, Oklahoma, in search of native Sabal minor. About 20 miles southeast of Idabel, there they were, growing in ditches, in pastures, in woods...they truly are weeds down there. Here are some pictures, enjoy!!

It is pretty well documented that Butia x Jubaea F1 hybrids and the various hybrid generations (F2, F3,...) back crossed with Butia, (e.g. (JxB)xB and ((JxB)xB)xB) ) can survive and thrive in the hot and humid east coast where the Jubaea parent of this cross will not. All of these crosses have 50% or less Jubaea genes. This spring I purchased a ((Butia x Jubaea) x Jubaea), which could be up to ~75% Jubaea, from Patric Schafer. The summer here in southeast NC was hot, humid, and wet... If this plant was going to have issues with being hot and damp for months, this summer was a good test. This potted palm so far has been slowly, steadily growing and not showing any sign…

Here are some picture from the last three weeks, since it spring today I thought this would be a good time to showcase the garden before it gets to overgrown with exotics. In the little drought tolerant part of the garden I have decided to only have orange flowers so heres a few. Poppy are easy to grow and this one will reseed each fall. Semi Native succulent Lewsia… this one is a hybrid. Interesting barberry with unusual flower buds, flowers open to inside down daffodil like flower in bright yellow. Native current blooming for the hummingbirds.

North Florida Queen Palms, zone 9a expanding 1 2

Posting this topic in Cold Hardy since it's about northerly zone expansion. Depending what cold hardiness zone map you refer to, the Lake City, north Florida area would mostly be an 8b or barely 9a zone. Lake City is about 30 miles north of Gainesville, FL. Easily found on the map where I10 & I75 intersect... that's pretty darn north Florida. Looking around the area I was surprised to find as many Queen Palms thriving. As a reference, we all know how bad the 2010 winter was and the 2018 winter had temps that remained below freezing for hours! In addition, this area experienced sleet (but no actual snow fall) this past winter. I captured some pics of Queen Palms…

Short, Hardy, Palm Recommendations? 1 2

Any ideas for 8a palms, that would stay under ~4 feet tall? Aside from Trachycarpus nanus and Brahea moorei, which are both about impossible to find... Looking for things to put in front of my house, that would not obscure the front porch. I am open to non-palm recommendations as well. BLE's/non-deciduous. Thank you.

I'm guessing the brown tips are caused by overwatering? This is kept in the grow box, under grow lights. Butia x jubaea isn't doing this.

So, I took a ride around today and snapped a few photos of palms in New Braunfels, TX. All shots are in the city limits of New Braunfels, which is on the NE side of San Antonio. Generally speaking the lows are a degree or two lower than SA, but the highs are a degree or two higher than SA, for whatever reason. It is warmer in New Braunfels than northern Bexar County along and north of Loop 1604. Photos coming...

I decided to create a Journal to share over time for these with culture and temperature data over their lifetime here in 8a. I placed my order for these on April 19th 2020. They shipped April 21st, and arrived today April 23rd. These are 3yr old Syagrus romanzoffiana var. 'Litoralis' seedlings in 4"x4"x14" tree liners from MPOM stock parents I believe [forgot to ask but have sent out an inquiry] that are used in hybridization. Michael has been easy to work with, keeps good communication, and I have received what I have ordered quickly. 1 seedling will be planted 1 seedling will be potted 1 seedling will be given away in…
