Hello. Does anyone know what a regular queen palm (syagrus romanzoffiana) looks like when grown in a patch of soil that is often wet? (Not growing in a puddle, but still a somewhat damp area of my yard) I am considering planting one in this particular spot. For example, will the trunk turn out to be thicker if grown in frequently set soil? Will the fronds have a fuller/less sparse appearance? I have noticed that queen palms look different from northern Florida to southern Florida, for some reason. They also look different in California. I therefore suspect that the growing environment has some impact on the appearance of this palm. By the way, my soil is primari…

Wine palm diseases

Hello everyone. New to the forum! Have a few large wine palms by my house, this one in the picture we’ve had for at least 8 years and lately the heart seems to be struggling followed by other branches that look pretty wonky. Was wondering if any one had any advice on what could be causing this and if there is anything I can do to help it?

Needle palm experiment in Maine

Before and after pictures of needle palms, winter of 2020-2021 to today (3-7-21). one palm was planted in august, another in November and a third in January to test the hardiness of the palms. So far there is evidence of winter damage in all palms, but all palms still have green fronds. The most damaged palm was the most susceptible to winter winds. The best looking and most green palm was planted in august. The spears pulled from the other two, it will be interesting to see their recovery when temperatures start warming into the 60s and 70s.

Anybody ever try sticking a roof de-icing cord on a temperature-activated outlet under their mulch? Curious if this would buy you a few degrees in your yard overnight.

seeds needing cold dormancy?
by Lyn96- 16 replies

Does anyone know which cold hardy palm seeds need a cold spell in the refrigerator before they'll germinate? It seems like Trachycarpus fortunei does; bGermination ecology of Trachycarpus fortunei (Arecaceae), a species with morphophysiological and shoot dormancy https://www.researchgate.net/publication/351467162_Germination_ecology_of_Trachycarpus_fortunei_Arecaceae_a_species_with_morphophysiological_and_shoot_dormancy And I'm wondering particularly about Chamaerops humilis and Chamaerops humilis var. cerifera, but am also curious about any other hardy palms. BTW, I thought it was fascinating to learn from that study that many many palm seeds' ovaries do no…

Surgery/deep cut palms years later

Hi, Just out of curiosity about deep cutting cold damaged palms: I saw many pictures of those cuts weeks after the surgery with small fronds coming out, but I never saw photos of those palms years after. Do they really survive next winter? Any permanent damage to the trunk? Do young fronds have time to mature before they are hit with harsh summer sun? Thanks in advance, S.

July update South Carolina

Well, I figure it's about time for an update. I continue to have the best luck with Sabals here: S. causarium, almost 6' to the top of the tallest leaf Then there's S. uresana, which is also doing well. I planted 3 of these and still have 2. And here's a waggie, which is doing OK but could use more water and shade: Cycas panzihuaensis is still my favorite cycad here: That about covers the weeded areas of my yard. Here's a BxJxS planted out this spring: Now I thought I had some liner-sized palms around here somewhere: Maybe I should look under the weeds? Yeah, that's better. Of course…

I recently ordered a palm labeled as Washingtonia filifera on etsy, but I know that sometimes that is not always the case with Washingtonias. I hope it is ok on the cold hardy forum, since the pot is only temporary until I find a place for it to go.

Sabal x Brazoria?
by Joe NC- 2 followers

I purchased this a few years ago as a Brazoria from a nursery that had many kinds of Sabal (ecotypes of palmetto & minor, green uresana, and brazoria) all mostly strap leaf in 3 gallon, not labeled but separated into groups. I was directed to the Brazoria, picked one up and was on my way. Now a few years later and my plant has palmate leaves, I'm thinking maybe I grabbed one of the minors that got accidentally placed with the Brazoria? I think they maybe had Louisiana and some eastern nc giant type? I don't remember exactly but here is my palm. It usually holds 6ish leaves (most were shredded or crushed in hurricane last year), they are not ver…

Still more palm babies in Beaverton Oregon...

Here's the Butia yatay X Jubaea chilensis hybrid from Patrick/Patrix, just arrived in great shape! Also Trithrinax campestris, with its sharp pointy blue-green leaves. Love em! The JxB hybrid seems more coveted, but Patrick indicated that the BxJ hybrid is faster, hardier as a seedling, and has glossy green leaves (whereas JxB. yatay tends to have blue-green leaves that are less glossy). So BxJ leaves may resemble Jubaea more in terms of color/texture, which is a bit surprising. These will go into the ground after I move to So. Oregon with its warmer/drier Mediterranean climate.

Just Say No
by GregVirginia7- 16 replies

Went to Home Depot to get deck sealer and saw a “Pindo” palm…grower from FL. It was $70.00 in what looked like a 2 gal. pot. I’m in 7a/b…NOVA…and as tempted as I was, I said no. In fact, I told myself that’s not why I went anyway. I’d love to have a feather leaf type palm in my little environ here but I know, even in our best winters, they won’t survive without massive protection…but it really gets tempting to give it one more try, which indicates past failure even under protection. Any suggestions for a butia (spell check turned butia into BURIAL ) that may do well with minimal protection? I see people on this forum in NC with variations on the butia theme and they seem …

Odd Cocoid Hybrid

So I have this cocoid hybrid that's supposed to be a Buju or Jubu. It's been in the ground for 5 years or so, shady area, slow growth. But this bad boy is different. There are two odd characteristics that suggest Syagrus blood. Check it out. From a distance, it just looks like a robust Butia. On closer inspection all the fronds show plumosity and the fine point armament of a some mules. The pinnae are actually a little wider like Jub. It's fascinating. It lost its spear with the 8F low this winter, but fairly unharmed otherwise. What do y'all think? My best guess is Buju X Syagrus.

Ideas to save palm tree?
by maskedmole- 1 follower

I have a windmill palm tree I planted at my house about 4 years ago and this December it will be about 5 years. I didn't think much on it at the time but very close and above it are power lines with the lowest being maybe 12 foot high and the taller one like 15 ft high. It seems very happy here putting out many lush leaves per year and currently is waiting to push out 2 spears. It is very easy to take care of and only requires protection in the harshest cold snaps we have here in Tennessee, most of them being in January. So I intend for this palm to reach it's mature height some day. It was planted as a little palm but now is much bigger with many more leaves. I ha…

Spear pull - moisture after rain
by smatofu- 16 replies
Hello Guys! Unfortunately, I pulled spear from my CIDP. I don't cut the trunk yet, but I cut all fronts to the level where spear cavity starts. the cavity is about 8-12 inches deep. I cover the palm when its raining. After recent rain, I've noticed dew over the cut fronds. Water also collected at the bottom of the spear cavity. Wouldn't that mean that the palm is still alive? That there is healthy and live tissue inside the trunk? Thank you!

Public Mule Palm plantings by city
by smithgn- 16 replies

Hey guys, It's been awhile since I've posted-I hope the winter is treating you all well (it seems most of the U.S. has been spared from extreme frigid cold so far). Anyway, I was talking via e-mail to a landscape architect that recently completed a project for the city in my hometown of Columbia. It got me thinking of new evergreen/subtropical trees to plant rather than the same 'ol (palmetto's, Live oaks, Magnolias). So my question is, do you all know of any cities that have approved public plantings of rather unique subtropical trees, particularly the Mule palm? I remember reading somewhere that Jacksonville has approved mass plantings of …
