I have lived in my current home in Cherokee county Oklahoma for about 6 years. Over the years I have planted lots of small sabal minor seedlings throughout my 5 acres of mostly wooded space. I believe I also planted at least a few palmettos too, though I no longer remember which ones they were. Over my time here we have experienced winter lows of -2F, -2F, 10F, -14F, and 8F. Our summers had been pretty mild, without significant drought until the summer of 2022. This summer saw about two solid months of highs ranging from 95F to 105F, and several stretches of 3 to 5 weeks with no rain at all. On the plus side, I didn't do much mowing this year. I'm sure most of you are aware of the record-breaking, dreadful spring we are having in the PNW... So far I have only cracked 20C ONE day this year. Yes that's right, one day. Most years 20C is about the normal daytime high for late May. and we start having some 20C and sunny days starting in mid-April On top of the unseasonably cool weather, it has also been grey and wet with sunny days few and far between. However, I am pleasantly surprised to see my Sabal palmetto chugging along despite the weather. I've heard in the past that Sabals need temperatures over 25C to grow, but the growth on mine (which hasn't even come close to seeing that temp this year) would say otherwi…

To the left of my house there is a relatively small area (around 15 feet) in between my house and my neighbors house. It is a SUPER wet and muddy and my air condition units are back there. It gets very little sun light as my 2 story house is covering it. It is a north facing wall. It seems like it can be a bit cooler back there but then the air condition units pump out a little warm air. Does anyone think this could be some sort of microclimate? I was thinking of maybe putting some sort of fern there or maybe even shade loving palm. Any ideas of it being a micro-climate?

Well my new hybrid babies curtesy of Patric(k) Schafer arrived today. 2 Yatay mules much larger than I was expecting but not going to complain, they are the back 2. Then there is a Yatay x Jubaea on the left and a Butia x Lytocaryum hoehneix on the right, it will probably be the most frost tender of the group. I know many people have these hybrids in the ground now for several years. I would love to see pics of these so as to see what the future might hold for these guys.

As we did for Trachies, please list Livistonia species from coldest hardy to least hardy. Give two temps. ....one for first sign of damage and the second for death of the palm. So on a whim I checked out my wishlist at plant delights nursery and saw that the Chamaerops humilis var. cerifera were being sold again! I have been looking to get these to match my standard chamerops humilis for a while now. So I promptly ordered 2 (might order more lol) to start with and will be garage "greenhouse" keeping them until at least March 2018. Depending on size and health come spring will determine if I plant or just pot up again and "greenhouse" them for another winter. Eitherway great way to spend your lunch break!

Scot from SC's thread on hybrid hardiness piqued my curiosity. He bought a J X B, but thought it might be a B X J instead. I have a B and J something, and I'd like to ID it. What's the key differences to the observer? I recall other threads dealing with Syagrus X Jube and vice versa and one was ugly and one was gorgeous. Well some of you may have seen in another thread that I am the proud new owner of a small queen palm. So I'm second guessing my planting location (par for the course) and wanted to get some additional opinions on whether or not I'm setting it up for failure. The first two pics were taken this morning at 10:30 and show how shaded the area still is. It gets good sun all afternoon but my fear is without morning sun it may struggle. Not all the plants at my house, but wanted to point some things out. We hit an ultimate low of -4f followed the next day by a high of -1f and a low that next night of -2f. Then 3 more days that we didn’t go above freezing. Sudden really low drops not such a big deal when It warms back up quickly. This was a prolonged deep freeze like you would see farther north of here. The only palms that outright died were 2 smaller Trachycarpus fortunei, 2 smaller sized Trachycarpus Takil, and 1 Serenoa repens ‘silver’. Nothing received any heat. This was a real surprise that it survived, completely defoliated, covered with a tall 7 gallon bucket. All the green it pushed out …

Noticed last week that one of my R.rivularis has a really floppy couple spears pushing out. Peeled things back and found that one of the old leaf-bases was covered on the inside with a fluffy white mold. (I should have taken a picture) Okay, so, I took a page out of MattyB's book and drowned the growth point in peroxide. (fizzed like crazy) I even hit the healthy R.riv a bit just to be safe. Things seem to be getting better, they're getting full sun on the deck and there are now 3 spears pushing at once, also the white fuzzy has turned more to dry black gunk. 7 years after building a home here in rural Northeast Oklahoma, a change at work has caused me to look for new work opportunities. I have secured a new job in the San Antonio Texas area, and we will likely be moving before the end of April. Most of my in-ground palms are needles and some smaller sabal minors. I have four specimens that cannot be identified by experts at three different major universities; by individuals possessing doctorate degrees and that specialize in our native species. Yet, no one can accurately identify them. They don't even really attempt to and only can safely give reasons why they aren't consistent with what is in the norm for minor or palmetto. Hey everyone, I thought we should start a thread about this specific hybrid. It's a Butia x Jubaea parent hybrid, crossed again with a Syagrus Romanzoffiana. It's most likely a tad less hardy than the Butia x Jubaea hybrid, but then again, we really don't know.
