Time to trunk cut? 1 2

Looking for some second opinions here. I have two trachycarpus waggies that are planted on the east side of my home. The smaller of the two is thriving after having to be covered five different times this winter due to heavy rain events followed by snow/ice and temps below 20F. The larger of the two sitting just 15 ft away didn't fare as well, despite being covered in the same manner as its smaller neighbor. It spear pulled about a month ago. I have been giving a little bit of hydrogen peroxide once every week to 10 days since then. After past spear pulls that was enough to get the job done. This time though, I had another spear pull on me yesterday. Given this latest spe…

Large Sabal palmetto in Southern Oklahoma 1 2

Hello fellow palm lovers, While searching for some cultivated palms in the towns of southern Oklahoma, I was incredibly surprised to find a photo of some quite large Sabal palmetto and Trachys at the Choctaw Casino in Durant, Oklahoma. At first, I assumed it was a photo of a resort in Florida or along the gulf coast, but then I did some more searching and it really is in Oklahoma! Not just that, but another Choctaw Casino in the town of Grant, Oklahoma also has big Sabal palmetto! Choctaw Casinos are a chain of eight Native American-owned casinos throughout Oklahoma, three of which are also resorts. They clearly like palms and probably planted them to attract visitor…

In 2006, thanks to the Southeast Palm Society Hometown Grant (which the SPS gave out every year to plant palm in public places), I was able to plant a bunch of cold hardy palms on the campus of The University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Here are some pictures of the Needle Palms (there were also Sabal minor and S. sp. 'Birmingham' palms planted) right after planting in 2006. Palm #1: Palm #2: Palm #3: And these pictures of the same palms 8 years later in 2014. Keep in mind that this is after a brutal winter where the temperature in Knoxville dropped to -1F (-18C). Palm #1. This one gets full sun most of the day, and has a lighter color…

I was wondering if I should grow a filifera or filbusta in a zone 8a micro climate. The reason I say "micro climate" is because DC is pretty much a micro climat itself we havent gone below 10f since the artic blast of 2013-2014. I am growing date palms and I need something more hardy and fast growing. Thanks for your help.

I was checking out palms being sold from PDN and saw this Palmetto they call Sabal palmetto Augusta ( I've never heard of it ) . It survived the 80's record cold . It reminded me of my Sabal palmetto " Tifton Hardy " . They also have some Miamiensis and a hardy Cycas for sale . https://www.plantdelights.com/products/sabal-palmetto-augusta Will

Sabal minor are so underrated. Everyone that can grow them should. Everyone regularly on the cold hardy section should have as many as possible. Being native to so many different states and areas there’s so much diversity in just this one Sabal species. I love growing them, but I also love seeing them. Let’s see some pics!!!

Cold Hardy Madagascar Palms 1 2

I was wondering if there are any other palms and plants from Madagascar that would be worth trying in Zone 8b through 9b? Bismarkia is turning out to be a great (albeit marginal) palm for 9a. Dypsis decipiens shows a lot of promise as well. Any thoughts? Does anyone have a good climate map (zone map) for Madagascar? Do they experience freezing temps anywhere on the island?

How the Great Texas Freeze of 2021 Will Effect Your Gardening? 1 2

This is a topic that has me most interested. It may take months or a year before the impact is known from the Coldest Temperatures Since 1989 for millions of gardeners. Some gardeners broke 100 year old records and others just miles away missed this event for the most part. Statistically this could happen again in the next 3-5 years.

Regenerated Sabal coming soon 1 2

I picked out and paid for a regenerated Sabal palmetto from Kitty Hawk Garden Center last week. I picked the fat one in the middle. The root ball is 3' across. It will get installed in another week or so. Apparently they "wash them down like pilings" - meaning that they dig the hole with a jet of water rather than a shovel. It's going into soil that is basically sand. I get the impression that they plant them lower than they were before. The soil is sandy enough that this probably works fine - despite some research suggesting that planting deeper can contribute to problems later. They don't prop these palms. I'm a little nervous about the project. We don't …

Fastest of the ultra hardy trunking Sabals? 1 2

Between the three hardiest trunking Sabals of Birmingham, Brazoria and Louisiana, which one develops a trunk and grows vertically the quickest? Birmingham is essentially a S. Palmetto in slow motion. The vertical spacing between leaf boots is similar to a Palmetto but the slow frond production leads to only a few inches of trunk a year. Brazoria produces fronds faster but the leaf bases are stacked on top of each other like a non-trunking S. Minor. Trunk growth is about a foot a decade, at least early on. This may improve later in life? Louisiana is an unknown to me. It has fast frond production like Brazoria but I think it grows trunk faster, and is possib…

Has anyone had any experience growing Acoelorrhaphe wrightii in zone 8B? I saw some of these in Florida in zone 9A and they looked pretty good and quite healthy. I'd like to give it a try in my neck of the woods. I'm assuming these need heat to grow at a normal rate? Picture taken in Crystal River Florida in Feb.
