Trachycarpus fortunei in shade or not?
by palm789- 4 replies

Hi i have read somewhere in these forums that if i grow my trachycarpus fortunei in the shade they will stretch and look bigger? Is this true? has anyone got any evidence to show me this or pictures to compare both a normal grown one (half shade half sun and the one in full shade). I am curious but want to see which i prefer to do before i buy.

Brown spots from greenhouse?
by ZPalms- 1 follower

Bought these trachys awhile back from etsy which were grown in a greenhouse, I just want to be sure that these brown spots are only from being grown in a greenhouse then moved to full sun or another problem because I seem to not be able to shake these away. Theirs less on the newest leaves but they are still present so does that mean the palm is acclimating to full sun or something else?

More yard pics (Spring to now before and after)

What a hot, wet summer we’ve had in the Midwest. Looking back at some spring pics, holy smokes. Not only have the palms loved it, everything has. Although I had to treat several landscape plants for fungus this year… Worth it for the growth! Needle looks kind of the same, definitely fuller. Opening frond 3 of the season on the main trunk but the pups have all pushed at least one out too. Hope you enjoyed. Beyond finishing the fronds that are almost open I don’t think I’ll get much more from them besides the Trachy this year. I wish this was my permanent home but hopefully the next owners will get to enjoy the needle and mino…

Hey everyone. Recently planted a 15 gallon Phoenix Sylvestris. It's seemingly been doing alright but it looks like Monday for me there will be a low of 30 for a few hours until sunrise. I already anticipated making an enclosure and using lights for next winter when weather got too cold (it varies so much every year here its ridiculous). I've seen the Sylvester can "survive" down to 20 degrees. I assume that's for large established ones though. So I guess I'd just like to know at what temperature, or sustained temperature do most people decide to protect their palms? I know it will vary by region and palms but just in general.

This is a Jubaea Chilensis grown from seed and it’s officially putting out a first leaf. These things can be tough to get sprouted and can easily rot with too little sunlight or too damp soil. soil mix: peat/top soil/earthworm castings mixed together and then the resulting medium finally mixed with 50% perlite. pots are deep “disposable” plastic pots from Amazon. humid zone 8a Alabama.

Sabals dying at Mercer Botanical Garden

I visited Mercer today. They lost most palms in Palmaggedon, but the Sabals were largely spared. I was shocked to see a dead Sabal minor 'Louisiana' (two trunks). I also noticed the same thing with Sabal 'brazoria' - two trunks, one dead, the other dying. Anyone have the inside scoop? Think this has to be some pathogen. Doesn't bode well for their beautiful Sabal uresana, mexicana, and palmettos.

Sabal palmetto on Inks Lake, Texas
by Meangreen94z- 1 follower

There are a few(4-5) Sabal palmetto growing on the shoreline of Inks Lake within the Texas state park. The park has owned the land since 1940 when the Lake was being created. So I’m guessing the seed washed up from elsewhere on the lake. They are growing under a tree canopy, although a few are about to break through. Nothing terribly exciting to look at aesthetically but interesting given the area. They probably saw 2-3°F in 2021.

Multi-point temperature sensor
by zimm- 4 replies

I am sorry for having to ask this as I've seen a post somewhere with a 4-5 position temperature sensor but cannot find it. I'm looking for one of those weather station devices that has an indoor unit that displays temperatures and multiple outdoor sensors I can place - ideally so I can get garage temp (overwintering seedlings), back yard temp (general year round outdoor air temp), plus several I can place on prized palms under frost cloth/christmas lights to ensure temperatures are OK. Any recommendations on something you love? Minimum 3 sensors ideally. Thanks!

Too much or too little water
by UncleBobbyB- 4 replies

This windmill palm has been in the ground 18 months, and all of the sudden it's leaves are folding/thinning. I have read that it is hard to over water these palms. I was watering 2-4 times a week. I have not watered in 7 days and the soil is still showing "wet". Did I over water it, and what can I do next.

Are they the same palm or different?
by mdsonofthesouth- 4 replies

Sabal x texensis 'Brazoria' or Sabal minor var. louisiana. They both seem to come from relatively close to each other as well as sharing the same hardiness. Both are trunking and both might come from a hybridization of palmetto and minor. Please someone educate me on these palms Im considering them, but dont want a minor/trunkless palm outside needles and the sabal minor my grandma gave me. Thanks!

Sabal minor vs hardy evergreens

Who took -1F better, Sabal minor or evergreen trees? Damage may be due to rapid drop in temps? I did a video on this but I am shocked to see so much cold damage to evergreens around town. Leyland cypress - Brown all around town Most magnolia ok but this was a whole area of brown ones Skip laurel - fried everywhere you look Sky pencil holly - established in a protected area Heavenly bamboo Nandina - fried Oak leaf holly - established for 2 years 8 footers - toasted Sabal minor - relatively good . Some have significant spotting

Frond discoloring

Hi everyone, Sorry for all of the questions lately. I am pretty new to planting and not potting. I planted a sabal minor and needle at about the same time a month ago. They have both seen temperatures in the mid 20s a few times rebounding into the 60s with plenty of rain. On the sabal one of the fronds turned completely brown. This was planted bare root which I know can be troublesome. The needle was planted as a 30gal and has looked fine until recently the tips are turning yellow. Is this due to too little/ too much rain? Cold temps? Transplant shock? Or am I over thinking it? Thanks for the responses!

I have a Sabal minor that is too small to plant yet and was planning on planting it next year. I am wanting to leave it inside for this winter (leaving it outside on the coldest nights while in a small pot would kill it) but am wondering if that will effect the cold tolerance of it fo the next winter after this one since it would not be experiencing any true cold. Do you think it will be fine if I leave it inside this winter?

Windmill Palm Suddenly Wilting
by knikfar- 4 replies

Hello all, I planted this windmill palm in my yard about 5 months ago. It was looking fantastic up until about two weeks ago. Then the lower fronds started to droop. Then the centers of all of the fronds started to yellow a bit and now I'm noticing the individual blades are folded in half. I live in Raleigh, NC where these palms are prolific. It's planted in a mostly sunny area that doesn't drain very well so I mounded it up when I planted it. But because it doesn't drain well and the area stays fairly moist, I haven't given it any supplemental water and it's been hot and dry for weeks. Could this be drought stress? I thought it could also be a fungus so I spra…
