Palm tree through the roof

These guys love their palm so much they cut a whole in the roof. I've driven by this palm for the last few years but only realized it had the cutout this last year. I wanted to shoot from in front of the house but didn't want to look shady. Video from yesterday in West Linn, Oregon.

inflorescence in sabal species
by palm tree man- 5 replies

Sabal are clumped and grouped a great deal. I grew up around Sabal Palmetto and notice subtle differences in between Palmetto grown in different areas and more importantly in different conditions. One thing that I have really noticed aside from the obvious traits such as trunk size, trunk color, boot retainment, leaf color, or leaf shape is that the flowering structures also vary greatly and that there isn't allot of information on the net about the differences between species which is a big help when identifying them. Many species of palm have been granted full species and not variety status do to their flowering structure. What experience do some of you …

I am super excited to have finally spouted my first Sabal uresana. This is the first "exotic" Sabal that I have been able to sprout; the only other ones I have sprouted were Sabal palmetto and Sabal minor. Any advice you guys can give me to ensure it makes it to adulthood would be much appreciated. Thanks. Richard

Radicalis next to pool?
by krishawkins- 5 replies
I planted a small palm (c. radicalis) by my pool - a friend came over last night and I told him I had intentions of doing a row of palms by the pool. He told me not do that he knows someone who had the palm roots go through concrete and destroy the pool. Everything I read online says palms can be planted near a pool and the root system shouldn’t be disruptive. What are your thoughts?

Online Palm help

Hello, April is just around the corner, meaning it is almost Planting season. I am probably going to do landscaping between late April to memorial day. We actually got snow today in the north east where I live, and it can snow up until the first week of May so we will have to see what happens. No places around me sell palms. One place I actually reached out to will have basjoo banana later this spring, but no palms. What are some recommended online stores/sites to buy windmill or sabal minor palms from? In an earlier thread someone brought up mail order natives which they have needle palms for a cheap price, just out of stock for now, as well as Palmpeii nursery. Any othe…

Chamaedorea Radicalis rocks!

Quite impressed with this palm so far. I bought some C. Radicalis (trunking and non-trunking) on Jungle Music sale in mid-December. The palm has been on my radar for a while so I was unable to resist this deal. I decided, in an impatient bout, to plant it in the ground immediately (the winter had been mild thus far). As with all my new trees and shrubs, I inspect the root system and often do a thorough root-washing and root pruning (if needed) before I plant in native soil. I was horrified at seeing such a girdling, rock solid mass of woody material on this palm! There was almost no soil visible! This can't be healthy, I thought, and I took a sharp saw and just…

I see different posts with different colors. I wonder if it's either genetic or if the environment plays a role, similar to some blue cycads.

Dactylifera Frond Boots
by ahosey01- 5 replies

This morning I was trimming back some of the old, leftover frond boots on my Phoenix dactylifera when something happened which I have not experienced. Two of the frond boots, with no meaningful effort, ripped directly out of the trunk and left these big open spaces. Behind them, there is this fibrous dust that appears to fill the spot where they were. I have also noticed a faint musty smell, like a poorly ventilated, wet basement, coming out of the stringy fibrous material when I pull it away from the trunk. It almost seems like the trunk is rotting under these frond boots. Curious if anyone has experienced this or knows what it is or if it matters. None of th…

Sabal minor miracle!

Last spring 2019 I planted a 5 gal sabal minor by the back of my property. I offered it NO winter protection in a 6a climate. This spring 2020 it was completely dead or so I thought. This morning I was out weeding and discovered new growth coming out! I thought it was a lost cause but am happy to see! Anyone else have a successful sabal minor above 42N on the east coast? Transplanting S. palmetto seedlings
by Manalto- 5 replies
These two seedlings appeared at the base of my Sabal palmetto. I realize that they're slow growers but I like the look of young sabals, especially when grown in a little shade, (and the price is right) so I'd like to move them. Two questions: Do they look to you like S. palmetto seedlings (and not another species delivered by birds)? What's the best method and timing for moving them?

Palm Book
by ghar41- 5 replies

I've been very impressed with the book Cold Hardy Palms by Alan W Meerow. I have found the information very helpful with lots of examples of cold hardy palms. Much better than the coffee table type palm books you see floating around this one has specific information about nutritional needs, propagating seed, disease problems and much much more. It is obviously well researched and I recommend it to my cold hardy friends out there.

Hi everyone, I uncovered my Needle about 6 weeks ago. When I did it was looking nice and green. Since then it has been browning from the tips back. Is this a delayed winter frost reaction or fungus? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks *First photo March 15 second and third today*

Never ever protected beyond existing water oak canopy...granted the bud of these palms are at ground level but was pleasantly surprised nonetheless. Long duration 25F and freezing rain(!) Licuala fordiana...spear pulled but second spear is coming right up! Lanonia dasyantha...the burning is not from cold but pre-existing transplant shock. It was planted in December!! Next to no cold damage at all??? The Philodendron crassinervium next to it melted. Foxtail seed that sprouted last August

I just wanted to share a couple of cold climate palms that I am attempting to grow in my tropical climate here in Manila. First off is Trachycarpus wagnerianus. I think this is about 6 years ols now. I had a number of these but all those that I planted in the ground died a very slow death. I am not sure what went wrong. I tried a couple of different micro climates-- sunny and a bit more protected.

I’d like to plant a Trachycarpus fortunei in my yard (cheaply). But how young a tree can I plant outside? I live in Central Texas, zone 8b. I have a spot picked out in half to full shade, and I’m planning to make a smallish mound to plant it in, since the soil is heavy clay under about 6 inches of topsoil and drains poorly. It’s Texas, so we have some wind. How young a plant do you think I can plant in the ground? This will be my first palm tree. Any other advice?

Trachy seeds arrived from the UK. Courtesy of @Vic I got the permit for seed importation just to make sure they didn't get confiscated in customs. Going to use my "jumpstart method" to geminate them.

Hi all, found this nice specimen at a small botanical garden I was visiting a few weeks ago. It's just named Sabal minor. Could this really be a S. minor or maybe it's another Sabal? Added a picture of the whole plant and a detail of a leave. Thanks Eckhard

When to plant Washy Filifera in zone 7b?
by knikfar- 5 replies
I just recieved four baby Washy Filifera's. Each is between 5 and 6 inches tall. I know this is going to be a palm that requires protection in my zone but I'm wondering when I should plant them? I have lots of sabal palms about the same size that I planted last year and they sailed through the winter, completely unprotected with no damage at all. I've also read some of these trunking palms are hardier when small because they're focussing on establishing their roots vs gaining height where they'll be more exposed. At the moment, I have them potted and I'm thinking I'll keep them this way over the winter and plant them in late February, when all danger of temps in the teens…
