Salvaged Needle Palm in Cincinnati
by donofriojim1- 5 replies
- 1.1k views
In my previous post, I showed how a local restaurant her in Cincinnati had some gorgeous old and established needle palms that were being removed without rhyme or reason. The restaurant had 1 surviving needle palm next to a pile of "dead ones". I reached out to the owners of the restaurant and asked if I could buy the remaining needle palm off of them. They actually said that I could just take it ! On top of that, I checked the pile of "dead palms" and I found some that showed some signs of life. I salvaged those as well to see if I can get them to recover. Here are some pictures of the salvaging of these palms and the largest one transplanted to its new home.

I have searched the forums for bonetti, but haven't found much. I want to try zone pushing the most cold hardy Butia - which seems to be bonetti. On the greater web, I find one shop in Brittany, France that says that they will notify me if they get any in: Butia bonetti (achat-vente-palmiers.com)

Hybrid Phoenix (reclinata x roebelenii)
by Phoenikakias- 5 replies
- 1.4k views
I have potted up my young plants a couple of days ago, and from now on pot is about to remain constantly outdoors till to ground planting. Plants (at least one) while in cold frame took a look of roebelenii on steroids! But air humidity in the cold frame is higher and now plants have to cope with the lower humidity of open air. They will be fine but probably this will change to some extent their appearance. Anyway I found on this occasion a good opportunity to take some stills under natural day light, which capture their greenhouse look. Maybe in Florida with higher air humidity those hybrids would still retain this look...

How close to a wall should you plant?
by smithgn- 5 replies
This seems like a simple question due to the fact that all you'd need to consider is the spread of the palm tree you're planting... Yet, I'm wondering how close to a wall should you plant if you want your palm to feel the effects of a microclimate? For example, my robusta is planted 4 and a half feet away from the wall of my house that faces the south. In late afternoons, I can clearly feel the heat being dispersed from the bricks as it starts to cool outside. I'm now wondering if my robusta will feel the effects of this, come fall and winter? For added help, I've put red rocks (not lava rocks) around the base of my robusta. Should this help also? Or are the effects …

Sabal Minor McCurtian?
by siege2050- 5 replies
- 1.1k views
Hello, this Sabal grows on the campus of my College in Oklahoma z 7a, and gets zero noticeable burn during winter down to 0F that I can't see from just glancing at it. I suspect it is McCurtain since I am in Oklahoma and its on the College grounds. It just started blooming this year, and I waited all summer to see if anyone was going to collect the seed as I thought it might be an experiment since its in front of the science building. Unfortunately the seeds have started to disappear from animals so I went ahead and collected them as they would soon be all gone and no one seems interested. Any way to tell if its McCurtain? I wish I would have collected the seed earlier a…

Hello, I transplanted a 5 footer windmill palm from ground to the pot. I used potting mix and some palm fertilizer when transplanting. One month into the pot I see the entire tree is yellowing and it has been outside in the yard, have gone thru some freezes in Atlanta GA here. Lower fronds started getting lower , almost close to the ground. I want to save this palm. What do you guys suggest? thanks!

Location to plant Cycas Revoluta
by jwf1983- 5 replies
I realize that Sagos tend to like partial sun/shade. I'm wondering what matters the most when planting Cycas Revoluta beyond it's traditional range: -Does the same logic apply Partial Sun/Partial Shade (4-6 hours of sunlight a day)? -Does full sunlight matter more in cooler climates (particularly during winter) to off-set more frequently cold temperatures? I realize the likely (negative) outcome of this, given my location near downtown Washington, DC., however I've had this particular specimen potted and outside year round for nearly 7 years now. Winter protection has only amounted to burlap overtop on the coldest nights or with frozen precip. …

Storm's a comin'...
by Funkthulhu- 5 replies

Gentlemen, (and Ladies) Yet again mother nature can't make up her mind. Later this week we've got another cold front moving through. Might get as low at 24 degrees. If you're a nut like me, you've got a lot of stuff in pots out on your deck already. When would you start feeling worried about leaving a R. rivularis (almost trunking) out in the cold? What about Christmas Palm seedlings? Veitchia? For that matter, what about a Sea Grape? Pineapple? Sago? All the temp data I can find seems to have too wide a margin of error for my comfort. -Erik Nebraska 5b

Palm protection temperature fluctuations
by bgifford- 5 replies
I got some questions regarding the Temperatures inside my Box protected Washy's. This is my first Winter protecting them. I'm using Thermo-cubes to turn the Lights on inside at 35. I have noticed that Temps inside go up to 58F when the lights are on and then drop back down all the way to 35 before the cycle repeats itself. Do these fluctuations harm the Palm? And if so, should I just leave the lights on inside (remove the Thermo-cube) when I know temps drop at night. I know heat does not hurt them, but I am concerned about the fluctuations inside. I was wondering if I leave the lights on, I have constant heat ( I can also put the lights on a Smart outlet t…

Protection techniques
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 5 replies

I am curious what sort of things people do to protect their palms. Unfortunately, the landscape we have is part of our livelihood since we're in the hospitality business, so we have to keep the stuff from getting any cosmetic damage. This means taking the proper measures to provide adequate protection during freezes, even for things like colocacias and other tender stuff that damages at around 33F. We run reflector propane heaters mounted in favorable locations but I am always curious to hear what other folks are using.

Kansas grown Sabal brazoria, grown by my palm buddy, Raymond Sharon

I braved the cold and rainy Pacific Northwest-like temps today to help Raymond pot up his large collection of Sabal brazoria, and I am absolutely shocked by how fast these have grown. These palms are just over two years old, grown from seed collected from his Sabal brazoria on the east side of the First Church of the Nazarene in downtown Wichita..here are some pictures from today...enjoy!

Preventing Palms from Going Dormant
by jruffd13- 5 replies

Good Afternoon Everyone, my name is David and I am the proud founder and owner of District and Piedmont Palms. On 10/3/2022 I took my Washingtonia Robustas, Traphycarus Fortuneis, and Christmas Palm tree seedlings inside because we had a little bit of early freezing rain her in DC. I have put them on a shelve in our guestroom and I put grow lights over them and they are also next to the window. I turn on grow lights on for an hour when I wake up in the morning 5:40-7:40am (then I shut them off when I got to work because I am scared of fire and the dogs). After work they receive growlight light from 4:00-10:00 (6 HOURS). They are getting 7 hours of artificial light wi…

T. Fortunei smaller new growth
by SRJbb99- 5 replies
My T. Fortunei is sprouting new leaves that are smaller than the ones before. I have another one about 10 feet from this that doesn't have this problem but has a negligible amount more shade than this one. It has been in the ground about 3 months, Zone 8B in Dallas. Amended clay soil with sandy loam. Full sun. We've had the wettest fall months on record so that could be a part of it. Thoughts? I've never seen this before

Gonna do the imidacloprid drench - what are my palm's heights??
by PricklyPearSATC- 1 follower

I'm doing the imidacloprid drench for my sabal minors and sabal brazoria because I've had problems with the ox beetle in the past and I just know I'm gonna get a bumper crop this year. But how on earth do I measure their heights? Do I measure the trunks or from the ground to the highest frond? The minors have no trunk, the brazoria has a 6 inch trunk. But if I measure from the ground to the top of the highest frond, then the brazoria is at least 6 feet and the sabal minors are about 2.5 feet. I'm confused. Thank you!
