Some odd cold damage
by Kailua_Krish- 5 replies

So I finally made it back to my parents place and got to take stock of what was injured in the freeze (I believe it was a little over 2 weeks ago?). It is the oddest pattern of freeze damage Ive ever had. As you can see the leaves of both the Kerriodoxa and Chambeyronia were fried. Im wondering if this was because a blanket was thrown over them. All the spears are fine and the Kerriodoxa are already opening new leaves. As you can see most of the pothos was perfectly fine with only a few higher leaves defoliating, yet the bougainvillea defoliated completely? (The unharmed pinnate palms in the front are B. alfredi and Lytocaryum w.) A side shot of the adjacent …

Our last stop on our roadtrip was Raleigh NC. I stopped to take a picture of the big Sabal Palmetto in the downtown neighborhood.. only one I have seen in raleigh We then went to Pullen Park. There were a lot of palms there . Here are some large Needles There was also a sparce amount of Sabal Minor and a ton of large windmills around the park Some were pretty tall too! lots of Volunteers were also all over the park. On our way to our hotel, I also got these drive by windmill shots Also saw these Sabal minor in the downtown heart of Raleigh Another one I have seen before …

How do I protect a Mexican fan Palm
by jvblack930- 5 replies
- 6.3k views
I have decided I will grow a Mexican Fan Palm, in Memphis Zone 7b and 8a. How do I protect this in winter, as I have a budget to $160. I can protect it up to 12-14 feet tall, and I want the easiest protection possible, and I am willing to buy a small vertical greenhouse for it or something. Please tell me how, and recommend products. Thank you very much.

These are my latest acquisitions... all 3 are blue colored when mature. Brahea decumbens is a bushy multi-branched palm, and fairly rare. B. clara is very rare, hard to find anything but seeds on the market (I've got those too, if I can get them to germinate hehe). Brahea super silver is a bit easier to find; like decumbens, it is green when small, but can be very blue/silver when larger, especially if grown in bright sunlight. The clara is a 15 gallon plant and about 6 feet tall; the others are 5 gallon. Got them at JungleMusic.net; they're having their fall/winter sale right now so prices were a bit lower than usual. All 3 are very cold hardy (and the clara al…

Trachy Health Question
by GregVirginia7- 5 replies
There is a perimeter of fronds on my Trachy that have very pronounced yellow segment tips...the newer fronds above this line are clear of any of it. The lower fronds have always had a slight case of it but it’s more pronounced on this ring of fronds...it’s gotten two Palmgain feedings this season...wouldn’t concern me except it’s so pronounced but only occupies about two inches of the segment edge...

It's hard to tell from the photo but the newest 2 or 3 fronds including newest spear are all emerging at an angle in relation to the trunk. Is this due to a nutrient deficiency? I have it on the same fertilization schedule as the past 2 seasons Thanks, Dave

Windmill troubles
by kbob11- 5 replies

I bought this bare rooted windmill a couple of weeks ago and it looked great aside from a few bent fronds. I skipped one day watering and came home to it looking awful and shriveled. The center spear is still firm but all of the fronds are looking more and more dead by the day. Is this a really bad case of transplant shock? The soil and pot are well draining and I put in some slow release palm fertilizer. Thoughts? I really hope it pulls through.

I am gutted. A 15 yr old jubaea in ground for 8 yrs is seriously ill with what I believe is a fungal infection. Quick background. We have suffered through 2 back-to-back winters with -13.5C minima. First winter (2021/22) I covered with tarp and rope lights over cold period and palm emerged in good form; no problems. Second winter (2022/23) I did the same thing but I was not in a position to remove the tarp for 2 weeks following cold snap as I was out of town and didn't realize it would be a problem (I protected a large chamaerops the same way; it had no issues). During that time jubaea developed a fungal infection that affected many of the outer leaves. I was hoping …

Do Trachycarpus Nanus flower in the spring like other Trachy's? I have three of these that are some15 years old now, and they have never flowered. I should be a grandfather by now darn it. They are slow indeed, but you would think by now eh? Thanks for any input on this.

Needle Palm planted about 3 years ago
by maskedmole- 5 replies

Planted this when I moved out my parents at my current home like 3 years ago in Tennessee. It's in pretty much full shade under oak trees and a concrete wall behind it to the north so it is somewhat shielded by northern wind by many trees and the wall. Some little sunlight sometimes penetrates at certain times of the day like morning time I think so maybe you could say somewhat part shade. I don't think it will end up being very big but I kind of like the look it has in the shade. First picture with the blanket was in December 2017 mulched up. The one with the glove was taken today June 2021. So this December it will have marked 4 years being planted. But I think I actual…

Needle palm ID question

About a dozen years ago, I separated this palm from a clump at my father's house in California and took it to Tennessee with me. 9 years ago I dug it up and transplanted it to my current home in the North Carolina mountains. My Dad didn't remember the genus and species, but was pretty sure it was native to NC or Georgia. Since then I'm about 99.9% sure I've ID'd it as Needle Palm, Rhapidophyllum hystrix. The thing is, I say "99.9%" because of the size of the plant: it's about 3 feet tall, and has been about 3 feet tall since at least 1978, the earliest date I can be certain that it was growing at my Dad's house. Everything I read about R. hystrix says that it gets ar…

I was recently in Madrid and got to spend about an hour in the botanical garden there. They have a nice collection of palms in USDA zone 9a. I didn't take many pictures but thought I would share a few. I was especially impressed by the Trachycarpus martianus, Butia sp. gigantea and Parajubaea torallyi.

I visited a friend earlier this week and he owns a large property in this area that he has been busy planting on for well over decade. His yard is nothing short of a full-fledged botanical garden with a rich collection of rare trees (maples, oaks, etc...) and shrubs. Of course, palms are strategically sprinkled across the area (several mature Trachy's, (Brazoria) Sabals, Washies, saw palms, Butias, etc...). I didn't have the best camera nor was the lighting ideal but I quickly snapped a few pics. I mainly wanted to share the photo of this large weeping chamaerops. Second pic is of a smaller one (probably cerifera). Last pic is of a very fast-growing Sabal Uresana in…
