What Survived Texas Worst Winter in 30 Years Update

Several palms that initially survived to see spring died by fall. Most notably almost every Washingtonia Filifera and Brahea Armara… my very tall Phoenix Sylvestris. I have a map view of the before, and I circled what survived that was over 20FT tall. They were 2 Canaries, 1 Washingtonia Filifera, 1 Washingtonia Hybrid, 1 Sabal Palmetto, 1 Sabal Mexicana. Less than 2 dozen smaller palms survived out of a total collection of over 100.

BUTIA ODORATA
by sped94- 5 replies

Hi everyone, I would like to buy a Butia Odorata and plant it in my garden. I read that this plant is very resistant, is this true? In your opinion, is it more resistant than a Phoenix Canariensis? Where I live minimum temperatures at night often drop to around 0C/32F, however temperatures below -5C/23F are quite rare. The climate is very different from that of the USA, in the sense that temperatures have a very regular trend and rarely deviate much from the average (extremes are very rare). By the way, the lowest temperature ever recorded was -12C/10F in 1985, and more recently -10C/14F in 2010. In winter it doesn’t rain much and snow is very rare. A…

So the palmetto you see isn't effected by any air from either unit, but I want to plant a palm right next to the palmetto up against the house and one next to the black hose. Yall think that's too close or will be an issue?

Where to find a Pindo Palm in Houston?
by Chester B- 1 follower

I'm looking for some small to medium (3-15 gallon) sized PIndo palms in the Houston area. The only ones I've found are at Houston Garden Center and they are $190, very green and not all that big? Do the big box stores ever get them in? I keep looking and it seems like less cold hardy palms are much easier to source. You'd think such a cold hardy pinnate palm would be easy to find.

Wrapping just the trunk of windmill palms
by siege2050- 5 replies
At what temperature do windmill palms foliage burn? We don't get that many days here of below 15F. Would it be possible to just wrap the trunks with lights etc. to keep the meristems safe until expecting below 15 or so? I hate to completely cover them all winter just for a few days of super cold but don't want to fry the foliage either lol. Also any tips on how to keep water out of the top so it won't freeze if not completely covered with leaves exposed?

I was wondering if there is any difference in germination methods or requirements of Sabals? Does a Sabal brazoria require different methods than say Sabal causarium or minor? AKA different temperatures, humidity, duration, pre treatment

Dark Green Fronds
by BeyondTheGarden- 5 replies

I planted this Trachy earlier this summer, the fronds have turned very dark green. The Mahonia x media next to it has exhibited the same thing. Thus is under the canopy of some big Doug firs, and was getting watered daily by a lawn sprinkler (how I water the entire garden). I'm assuming it's a nutrient deficiency, the soil here seems rather void of organic material. If that's the case, I also assume it's too late in the year to apply fertilizer?

Back in 2003, a few dozen sabal minors were planted along the banks of Lake Brandt in Greensboro, NC (Elevation 892' zone 7b/8a). They have since naturalized, and there are probably now over 200 specimens in the area, along with a few needle palms which also seem to have naturalized. Here are some pictures I took yesterday while hiking the trails around the lake: Only saw one with an inflorescence: Seedlings coming up everywhere: Needle Palm: Only saw a few needle palm seedlings, all around this size: Lots…

Where to buy a 2-4ft CT Dactylifera
by SRJbb99- 5 replies

I’ve been searching the better part of 6 months and can’t find them anywhere. I know they aren’t truly cold hardy but a local meteorologist in the Dallas area has one and I wanted to give one a shot. Any ideas? I would even take 4-6ft overall with no trunk if I could find them.

Chamaerops Update

Just a quick update on the Medi… January 21, 2023 This morning… Bouncing back much better than the Trachy…lower trunks really doing well…large trunk fronds are quite small but guess the developing ones on the inside took a hit too…been a very weird sort of spring (or normal? usually we fly right into summer)…chilly 50’s at night, 70’s or low 80’s daytime…very DRY and the smoke from Canada’s wild fires blotting out a fair amount of sunlight may be slowing the Trachy a bit but looks to be clearing today. Hope other recoveries are going well…very impressed with this trooper!

trachycarpus dry spears wth happened

All winter my trachy was fine until now, I realized last week yellow on the spears but I thought the green color would of come in from the chlorophyll just because it was new but now that I'm looking closer all the spears expect the one thats opening are all dried out, I pulled on the spears and none of them came out but I was able to break a spear because it was so dry. I've been watering it here and there in the winter including the rain it gets so I don't get it

Trachycarpus oreophilus - any experience
by Chester B- 5 replies
Is anyone currently growing Trachycarpus oreophilus? Any info on how they do? I'm assuming its a pretty easy care palm. I looked at the freeze damage section and not a lot in there. It may be the nicest looking Trachy out there and I would like to try one, and I have access to one but I think it will come with a hefty pricetag.

Nice Surprise

Ok so this is probably nothing to write home about but it got me a little fired up so I thought I'd share. So over the winter we'd pull handfuls of trachy hair off one of the trees to use to start our fires. It's crazy flammable. Anyways I was cleaning up around the yard today and noticed a yellow spot on the trunk of said tree. I took a closer look and noticed it was an old boot. So I cleaned some more and got some more yellow, and some more, and some more. I dunno if this is a typical coloration of old trachy boots but im hoping it stays.

Best sun exposure for Sabal minor zone 7a?
by newtopalmsMD- 1 follower

What is the best sun exposure for sabal minor in zone 7a. It currently gets sun from 10 am to 1:30 and 3:30 till 6. The is a limb from a nearby oak that casts a shadow from 1:30 till 3:30 in the summer months. Is it worth having that limb cut down to get more sun on the sabal? or is shade mid afternoon shade better? (or doesn't it really matter?) Thanks

Hello everyone! I am curious about when a good time would be to completely remove the Box ( 2x4 frame and foam board insulation). It's getting closer to Spring and was just trying to think ahead. I opened the box up to vent it out and to check on the Palms (which look still great). I know that there is still a chance of frost here after Spring starts, but I was thinking of eventually maybe just throwing a Frost cloth over them (leave the C9 bulbs wrapped around them with thermocube) if it dips too much into the 20s. This is the first Winter that they are in the ground. Overall height is about 5 1/2ft to 6ft now. In recent years March had a ton of days wi…

Some odd cold damage
by Kailua_Krish- 5 replies

So I finally made it back to my parents place and got to take stock of what was injured in the freeze (I believe it was a little over 2 weeks ago?). It is the oddest pattern of freeze damage Ive ever had. As you can see the leaves of both the Kerriodoxa and Chambeyronia were fried. Im wondering if this was because a blanket was thrown over them. All the spears are fine and the Kerriodoxa are already opening new leaves. As you can see most of the pothos was perfectly fine with only a few higher leaves defoliating, yet the bougainvillea defoliated completely? (The unharmed pinnate palms in the front are B. alfredi and Lytocaryum w.) A side shot of the adjacent …

How do I protect a Mexican fan Palm
by jvblack930- 5 replies
- 6.3k views
I have decided I will grow a Mexican Fan Palm, in Memphis Zone 7b and 8a. How do I protect this in winter, as I have a budget to $160. I can protect it up to 12-14 feet tall, and I want the easiest protection possible, and I am willing to buy a small vertical greenhouse for it or something. Please tell me how, and recommend products. Thank you very much.
