Will Arenga engleri stay small in a confined space?

I’m thinking of planting them on either side of my front door. A bit of bushiness is fine but I’m wondering if they will tend to stay more compact in a small space, as something this big would be a bit much. I suppose I could just remove any annoying trunks as they emerged?

Trachycarpus establish
by palm789- 5 replies

I planted this trachycarpus back in March, took a while for weather to warm up, it opened its first and second frond/leaf, now I noticed it got 3 more spears2 big ones and another small spear, does this mean this palm is now established or does it just like where it is planted.

Hello Guys, do you have any experience with sago deep cutting? I have 2 sagos. 2021 Texas freeze damage. I was checking the tops weekly and they were firm until today. Today the top came came off. I cut the tops about 6 inches deep and sagos' cores are rotten. But there is firm and live tissue around the cores. Do you have any experience with sago cutting? I couldn't find anything online. Thanks in advance, S

Queen palm frond suddenly falls over. Why?
by Palm and Pool- 5 replies
My Queen palm's newest front went from straight up to straight down. Any ideas? This has happened before, but then it was soon after a freeze, one of the first new fronds to emerge. This time the palm has sent up several new fronds but suddenly the new one snaps in half and hangs down. We had a bad freeze 15F eight months ago, so I wouldn't think that the cause. We had a cool spring and a brutal hot summer and drought, so those are the conditions. I water it every day, sometimes twice. Sometimes I let the water run on it for an hour or so, maybe once every 10 days or so. I hope I am doing something wrong so I can stop! I would appreciate any …

Palmetto Weevil or Sabal Caterpillar?
by Scot from SC- 5 replies
- 1.5k views
I was picking up some sabal minor seeds off the ground...there are many left on stalks. Anyway, I was popping the fruit off with my thumb nail when my nail went into the actual seed. Something white was everywhere, and upon closer inspection it was a white larvae I had popped. At first I was stressed that it might be a palmetto weavil, but my research on the internet did not mention weavils having any part of their lives in the seed. Another site mentioned sabal caterpillar as the probable pest. My question: will this insect harm my minor? Thanks! I posted this on another forum today, and someone said that palmetto weevils do lay eggs in seeds of sabals. I don't know th…

Before and After
by GregVirginia7- 5 replies

Don’t talk much about my Needle palm but it’s really grown into a nice three larger, two smaller clump of trunks...three trunks are about 12” and the other two are smaller but it’s gone from about a 3’ high by 2’ wide in-ground experiment in 2014 to a 5x 5 picture of health today...what a fantastic cold hardy palm. Aside from a bit of protection its first winter, it’s faced every winter on its own. Surprisingly, the main trunk died a couple years after planting but the suckers prospered... First winter: Somewhere in the middle: To present: Anyway, sitting at the base of a slight slope, it gets a fair share of runoff and…

What would you say is the minimum temperature these palms would tolerate in a container? Palms are moderate in size (6-8 feet). The duration would be for a single overnight. Phoenix canariensis Butia/Pindo Washingtonia robusta Thanks in advance.

Sabal Recovery
by Manalto- 5 replies

This Sabal was planted in the winter of 2017. It seems to me to be slow in recovering and the yellow color concerns me. Am I just impatient? Today I'm going to enlarge the circle at the base for better watering and application of nutrients. Any suggestions to help it along and form a good healthy crown?

Robusta

Hi. I'm new to the forum. I live in a little town in southeast Georgia called Nahunta. It's about 30 minutes from the Atlantic and about 30 minutes from the Georgia/Florida line. I had a question about the small crown growth on a robusta I bought from a nursery. They got a few of them from a guy who was just getting rid of them. Anyway, they didn't have any growth on top. And, neither one of them had much of a rootball. They were in pretty bad condition. I believe they've been suffering from malnutrition. And, I think the leaves were burnt off from the previous winter's freeze (the guy lived about 69 miles up the road, and I believe they get harder freezes). …

Washingtonia robusta overwintering
by David_K- 5 replies

Hello, i live in Europe, in Czech Republic. My place is in zone 7a/b, this year was a bad winter with low of -12°C (for y'all imperialists 10°F), usually about - 8°C (17°F). My idea is to make a box from polycarbonate, cover the ground inside the box with styrofoam, roll the tree into some light wraps and then with heating cable (64W 4m, y'all imperialists 13ft). Is this possible or does anyone have a better idea how to protect the palm? I can get a lot of materials for free. I planted the tree this week, its like 60-80 cm high.

Pygmy Date comeback
by WSimpson- 5 replies

This Pygmy Date had a terrible root system , and then a friend of mine wanted to " help " me bring it outside in the spring and he didn't know how delicate he needed to be in transporting it and it basically fell over sideways . I don't know how it survived ? Well , I fertilized it and gave it some epsom salts and it is now solidly rooted better than it has been in years . I just found out how well it is rooted because I just took off the stakes that held in position for the spring , summer and fall to this point . I really wasn't expecting it to be so well rooted . I would highly recommend epsom salts for your palms . It seems to have been a miracle chemi…

Fertilizing needles and sabals in zone 7a
by newtopalmsMD- 1 follower

I have read not to fertilize palms in zone 7 after july 4. (Needles, sabals and trachy's) I have some palm fertilizer with a three month release time. Can I use this in June? or should I find something with a shorter release time. (I used up my 6 week release in early May) I assume that fertilizer timing is not an issue for my butia and Mediterranean fan which are in 15 gallon pots and will spend particularly cold days in a 40-ish degree garage? Thanks

Trunk size inquiry

Plotting some beds out for development and was wondering about trunk size of Sabal minor & Brahea moorei. i know they aren’t “trunking” but I understand Sabal minor at least does grow a subterranean trunk, how much space would one need to account for things like patio / sprinkler pipes / retaining walls, etc? my searching leads my to pictures of trunking specimen.. one area is going to be full sun, that’s why I’m looking into Brahea moorei, as I prefer the look of more shaded S. Minor

Trachycarpus hybrids

I'm trying to get as many Trachycarpus hybrids going as I can and I though of one that might be really interesting. T. latisectus X T. princeps. Or vice versa. Anybody ever hear of someone doing that cross? Maybe if I live long enough for mine to get big I'll try that.

ID? W. Filifera? L. Chinensis?
by zimm- 5 replies
Saw this one in South Padre Island, TX earlier this year at the Birding and Nature Center right out front. Having never been around Filifera or Robustas I thought the strikingly green indicated a Filifera vs the MANY Robustas around there. These were the only two pictures I took unfortunately but the teeth were VERY minimal and all green vs yellow or red as what (with my limited experience) you expect to see on Robustas or hybrids. The hugely green nature of this does make me wonder if it is something else entirely like a L. Chinensis which I think has a similar look. Any help?

Some of my palms that I’ve collected. Many of these are not going into the ground as they wouldn’t stand a chance haha. Theyre all a bit rough looking due to neglect and me being away. This is a Chamaerops Humilis which I bought from a Maryland Lowe’s as a blue pot. It’s pretty big and I may try it outside but I’m not sure. It may not work out.

How fast, or how slow do Needle Palms grow?
by siege2050- 5 replies

I know they are slow, but just as an example, about how tall and wide, foliage included, would a 1.5 foot planted height Needle be in 5 years with good water, heat, and fertilizer. I am trying to get an idea where to plant some of the plants I have bought this year.
