I have found sources for several of the more obscure S. Minor Spp. (Louisiana & Etonia) but I haven’t had much luck finding any of the RARE “Ultra Mini Dwarfs”, does anyone have any leads on the really teeny tiny dwarfs? Also, I heard of a find of some 20+ naturally occurring S. Minor super Dwarfs found in habitat in Liberty County, TX that appear even smaller than the variants out of Florida, has anyone heard any updates about that potentially new Sp. of S. Minor Dwarf? https://www.palmtalk.org/forum/topic/65465-dwarf-sabal-minors-in-texas/ If it is against forum rules to name specific vendors or offer plants for sale in this thread PMs are also appre…

Needle Palm

Moving right along…this Needle started out near a birdseed (squirrel) table…despite its protective needles, the critters nearly battered it to death, so I moved it to a nice, quiet spot under a big holly tree, though a very dry, shady spot, over the years, it has really responded…no protection at all except for the natural canopy of the holly tree and its south face…I highly recommend this palm for unprotected zone 7…over time, in a sunny spot, you can get a trunk as well…

Sabal minor Spear Problem
by PalmTreeDude- 5 replies
- 1.2k views
Hello, I recently reported one of my Sabal minor seedlings, but then spear was brown when I saw it and it seemed to be buried in the soil a bit, which I did not notice. Anyway, I reported it (making sure to keep the growth point higher) and applied hydrogen peroxide to the spear, it did not fizz to much. Do you think it will be all right?

All the sudden the new fronds on my windmill are coming in burnt and dead. I try watering often in the heat. I live in the Charlotte area in NC and have had this palm there a couple years now. Never had this happen. Over the winter the new fronds came in bent and not great looking from cold, but the ones in between winter and now were normal. See pics

Palm ID help

Hi everyone - Happy Thanksgiving! I’m staying near Clearwater FL for a week, and the house next to ours has these palms lining the fence. I thought they might be monster silver saw palmettos, but some things seem different. Some are quite tall (one has 10+ feet of vertical trunk), and many of them are developing second and third crowns on a single trunk (or maybe it’s seeds germinating on grooves of the trunk; can’t tell). But most trunks seem to be somewhat horizontal like I would expect for a saw palmetto. Any guesses? Lots of seeds on the ground so considering taking some home.

When to Plant Trachycarpus Fortunei Seedlings Outside
by newtopalms- 5 replies
- 1.9k views
I recently planted some Trachycarpus Fortunei seeds which are just beginning to sprout. I'm wondering when I should plant these outside. I live in Southern Oregon, Zone 8A, and summer is approaching. Should I plant these outside at the beginning of summer, or wait until next year? It would be difficult to wait because I don't have much space inside for 10 palm seedlings.

Can you ID these two palms?
by Sandy Loam- 5 replies
Hello. The attached photo contains two palms which appear to be phoenix of some type. To me, they look like either Phoenix Sylvestris or Phoenix Dactylifera, but I can't see the trunks because the palm in front is blocking the view of the palm behind it. Can anyone tell, based solely on the fronds visible in this photo? I am assuming that both the small palm and the big palm are the same species, but I don't know this either. Many thanks.

Jubaea spear seems to be split in half? Is it ok?
by Palmhammer- 1 follower

Hey guys, I placed my newly bought Jubaea outside on Monday, given the mild weather we’re currently experiencing. My plan is to keep it outside in its pot, and to put it in the garage whenever there’s some frost, until planting it out in spring. Today I noticed that the spear looked a bit unusual for my unexperienced eyes. We’ve had lots of rain and some wind with temperatures between 8°C (46°F) and 12°C (53°F). Today it was 14°C (57°F) and night temperatures will be 10°C (50°F) for the next few days. I gave it a tug and both parts seem firm. So does it look bad? Should I be worried?

Chammy and Butia and others after 5F
by WSimpson- 5 replies

It's been a mild winter except for that cold right before Christmas . Chammy and Butia before the cold and after 4 mild winters till this December . After the cold . Still , they are fine and there's plenty of green and even flowering on the Chammy . My Chammy Cerifera is more frond hardy than the regular Humilis : My least hardy Trachy . All my other Trachys look way better than this one . The best looking Trachy I've seen is one that I planted at a Mexican restaurant . I think a drunk fell into it and bent some fronds down ? …

Root Exposure on Trachy
by Backpain- 5 replies
Hi Everyone, My wife and I are new to palms (and new to the forum). We moved to the Upstate region of SC from Kentucky about 8 years ago and thought we'd give a few a try here in USDA 7b/8a. Here is a really nice Trachycarpus Fortunei we bought and planted in the spring of 2017. It has done well, growing at least 2 feet in height since. We noticed some weeks ago that at the base of the tree on one side, there appears to be root exposure at ground level. At the s ame level on around the trunk, it does not have this appearance. Our first guess was a chipmunk or a vole was eating away at the bark to expose and feast on the roots. We wrapped the base of the t…

Hi everyone. We recently moved from Kennebunk, ME to Amelia Island, FL and while have always been a gardener and tree lover, my knowledge has been of the coniferous kind. Well now I am diving into tropical gardening and want palms. I already bought two small queens and planted them but have a landscaping company coming Friday, Dec. 4th to install a large Pindo, Mule and three queens along with a beautiful Loquat. I have since read about some people’s disdain for Queens and am rethinking my plan. Should I change out to the Queens to ??? - this is my dilemma of being a newbie. We are zone 9a here but frost does happen as many of you know and while I am okay in pushing the l…

Needle After a Windy Winter

So we had a pretty windy Winter here, the Needle Palm is exposed to it and there were many days where it literally looked like it was going to rip out of the ground (of course it wouldn't, but it was blowing around A LOT). Here it is looking good! It's ready for the heat.

Sabal Birmingham problem?
by newtopalmsMD- 1 follower

I am in zone 7a MD, which had a mild winter (I don't think any night was below 5F). I also had about 6 inches of oak leaf mulch around the plant over the winter. I planted this Sabal Birmingham in April of last summer, so this was the first winter in the ground. I have clay soil. It did fine in the summer and I fertilized with Miracle Gro palm tree food. As you can see the two newest fronds have brown tips. Also the two oldest fronds are done. Should I be worried about the condition of this Sabal and if so is there anything I should do? Also I noted that a more established sabal minor has just the very ends of tips (half inch?) of newer fronds a bit brown, bu…

I took this picture back in February at a BBQ restaurant. This palm has been there for around a decade and it's definitely an impressive specimen. Unfortunately this is the only one that I know of in West Tennessee.
