What will my Butyagrus look like in the future?
by LivistonaFan- 6 replies

I am curious how my Butia paraguayensis x Syagrus romanzoffiana will look like in a few years. Its leafs are very horizontally arranged compared to those of a normal Queen Palm. But nevertheless they differ greatly from those of Butia paraguayensis. I assume most mule palms are more upright than this one or am I wrong? Will it look more like a slender Butia or rather like a sturdy queen palm? Here is a photo the seller sent me to choose my palm (I still don't know why I took this one. Which one would you have picked?): Please feel free to post your Mule palm as a seedling and how it looks now. Maybe we can see a pattern what to look for to get event…

Surprises in Macon Georgia.

Was passing through Macon Georgia last week, and was surprised at some of the palms. Spent around an hour driving around. One place called AP's Hidden Hideaway Restaurant on 4275 Broadway Dr, had some tall Washingtonia Robusta, especially for interior GA. Quite a bit of winter burn, 30 - 50% of fronds were fried, most fronds had some burn. Tallest ones here, Some of the worst burn on these, These three seemed more like filibusta. thicker trunks and all, and considerably less burn. Couple more, volunteer on the bottom right. In Washington Park in downtown Macon, were a couple very old Sabal Palmetto, I talked to a few…

Hello, I recently had to have three 18+ year-old windmill palms transplanted from their original locations. Two seem to be doing fine so far, but one has fronds yellowing and browning at a very fast rate. It's definitely a lot faster than the natural slow yellowing and browning process they typically have. It had nothing but green fronds a few weeks ago and now has a bunch of yellow and brown. I'm not sure if it's stress, lack of nutrients, too much or too little watering, or something else but haven't found a definitive answer in my searches. I would love some advice to save this beauty. I'm just north of Atlanta, GA in Zone 7. Photos included. Thank you in a…

Massive Sabal Louisiana North Dallas

At capital one 1221 E Spring Creek Pkwy Plano, TX 75074. Tallest one was about 6 feet tall. There were also about a hundred volunteers in property and on adjacent ones. I have personally spread thousands of Sabal Louisiana seeds from an austin specimen in similar parking lot type settings, I wonder if these are the result of the same. Seems like Sabal Louisiana is perfect for this climate. About the limit for Sabal Mexicana and palmetto being bulletproof and these are a great intermediate option between regular minor I’ve collected a few hundred seed, if interested pm me.

The worst prolonged cold in 20 years, with a minimum of 15 F, and 4 consecutive days below freezing had the effect of wiping out all of the W. robusta. In Dallas, TX in 2011 Here are some images of that winters effect on filibustas, 2 years later. What is your prognosis?

This palm really took off this year after being in the ground for 4-5 years. I don’t remember exactly when it was planted. But I wanted to post some pictures because winter is coming and it could die at any time. But for now we are beating the odds.

I've been forcing growth on my Washy by keeping the Christmas lights on under the blankets even during warm periods into the 70'sF . It worked and I have way more growth at this time than in the past at this point . I finally took off the blankets a couple days ago because I want it to have a festive look and show off those lights at night . A few days ago : Now :

Mule palm (Butiarecastrum) and seeds
by Phoenikakias- 6 replies

What is the shape of seeds from such a cross pollination (hybrids from those seeds would be f1)? Are seeds from such mature hybrids fertile and generally, whether fertile or not , do such seeds (hybrids from those seeds would be f2) have a uniform shape? Reason for those questions is that I noticed some oblong and some round seeds relating to this hybrid. I say relating because I am not aware of more details like whether they are f1 or f2 seeds.

Pindo Palm. Yellow growth

This pindo palm is about 6-8 months old. It is in a pot and did great over the summer and fall. I heat tape surrounding the pot and strewn through the fronds as well as burlap protection. The last 6 weeks I noticed yellow droopy growth. We we live in Vancouver BC and only got down to -4 over night a few times so I don’t think cold has anything to do with it. Any thoughts ? ryan

So there is a bad cold front coming in from Canada and I decided to give my Windmill Palm a quick wrap due to the lows being in the mid teens! This is the Windmills first year and I was a little concerned, also people have been telling me I should wrap it it's first year, so I did. This wrap will come off on Sunday, one the lows go back to the mid 20s. Here is my terrible wrap job due to me being in a rush and it was freezing out. I hope it gets the job done.

This morning my heart dropped after i saw 3 fronds damaged by windy ( 25- 28 mph wind gusts) conditions. Aren't palms supposed to handle a lot more wind speeds before they show signs of wind damages ?

Determining the temperature growing range of palm species
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 1 follower

I'd like to start a meaty scientific discussion on what is the optimal temperature growing range for specific palms, and how to visualize that data in a useful manner that includes the photoperiod. This is not a topic for ADD Facebook style fly-by reading. You have to dive into this topic if you're interested in it. I've been playing around with a colored spreadsheet to visualize the temperature range. If you look at the chart below, you can look at the growing range, and then take a 10-15F photoperiod for ideal growth and determine if a palm is well suited to grow in your climate. For example, beccariophoenix alfredii has an optimal growing range between 60F a…

New b.alfreddii turning yellow/brown
by Straight6tt- 6 replies
Recently got a b.alfreddi on your favorite auction site. Its been potted up for a few weeks now but it seems to be getting more yellow and brown each week. Is this normal for a new palm of this size? Its in a relatively small pot of basic potting soil mixed with some lava rock and cactus palm soil from home depot. I did not add any fertilizer and have been regularly watering it when the soil seems a bit dry. This is getting sun from morning until about noon or slightly after. I am concerned because it seems more and more leaves are "dying" and the emerging spear (while green) isnt growing. Thanks if there is something I can/should change now than I will as I don…
