Broken palm fronds
by Jtee- 6 replies

Hi all. Quick question. Yesterday I bought a 15 gallon Washingtonian filiferra palm and had to bring it home In my van. I noticed today that the fronds are all bent and the biggest one is yellowing with some brownness on it. is this bad for the palm? Should I cut off all fronds (only has 4) and go from there. I will be planting in ground tomorrow. Thanks.

Massive Waggie palm - Portland, Oregon

The video doesn't do it justice, this is one you have to see in person to believe. I have seen ones nearly as tall but they didn't have the mass of huge fronds like this one does. Palm is located at Cistus Design Nursery on Sauvie Island (just outside Portland).

First time I've ever seen these in at Home Depot in East Tennessee. One says a Wodyetia Foxtail. The other pic I took was not labeled. I honestly have no idea. I just guessed perhaps a mule palm. They also had lots of Pygmy Date Palms.

Cincinnati Palms part 6

I Know its been a while but I have some updates on palms in the Ohio river valley. I recently met a guy in Louisville, Ky who planted some needle palms and sabal louisiana in 2014. They have been growing against the foundation of his house completely UNPROTECTED despite EVERY garden center telling him that it couldn't be done. In fact the sabal louisianas are actually beginning to from trunks and volunteer seedlings are sprouting up through out his yard! He allowed me to come down to his house and dig up a bunch of seedlings that are over a year old and made it through last winter unscathed. The first pic is me standing among his palms. The second pic is the volunteer see…

Hello everyone! Last year I overwintered my two Washingtonia robustas here in zone 6b by using some type of Styrofoam board secured on a 2 x 4 frame and c9 Xmas lights connected to a thermo cube. It worked great until it got really warm here in February with temps close to 80F, where I had to open them up, which caused a whole lot of mess with the Styrofoam material. All in all it protected them really good and my Palms took on about 2 feet this year. So now that I have to adjust and get more materials I was wondering what direction would be best. Go with Foam board like this https://www.lowes.com/pd/GreenGuard-GreenGuard-LG-1-X-4-X-8-XPS-Insulation-Board/5…

Heating idea

I probably won’t do this for the upcoming winter but when I move and plant a few long term Trachy, I’m wondering if something like this would be effective during those 24+ hour cold snaps. A large perimeter of burlap to block the wind, planted near the house with mulch for soil warmth, and this heater mounted above the palm. The crown could stay open to avoid fungal problems with top heat which would probably dry it out a bit. Trying to think like a botanist. Would it be enough during some Z6b winters?

Young Sabal Mexicana

Hi everyone, Today I've planted a texas sabal mexicana in the front yard. According to the internet they're very slow growing . Since this little fellow isn't growing in the wild would the growth rate be faster? Don't really want to wait 10 to 15 years for the trunk to be visible but if that's the case I'll planted it in the wild.

Queen Palm Protection Issues
by JLM- 6 replies

I am having issues protecting my Queen in the backyard. Its a lot bigger than it seems. Unfortunately, im thinking that i may need to hurricane cut the palm in order to make this work. Hurricane cutting as it cutting most of the fronds off. I really DO NOT want to do that, but if it means that it has a greater chance of surviving, ill do it. We are having troubles getting these fronds tied because theres so many fronds and we dont want to lean the ladder up against the palm. What do yall think? Is there any other way? Should i just let it go and hope it survives? Ill post pictures if its needed.

Old, tall Trachycarpus declining. Only a few small leaves

I have a 40 year old 28' windmill palm that hasn't recovered from the 2018 freeze in Virginia. I lost some other windmills, but this one is in a more sheltered location. The emerging leaves are small - maybe 1/2 to 2/3 the size of the healthy leaves it had before the freeze. It only puts out 2 or 3 a year. I'm afraid it's just too tall to recover. I've tried foliar feeding. I hate to just cut it, so I'll leave it as long as there is some green at the top; but I'm hoping that some of the experts on here can come to the rescue.

In my previous post, I shared some pictures of some established needle palms that were planted at a Cincinnati restaurant in about 2009 that never get any special protection of any kind. Here are some pictures that were taken by another local palm enthusiast and shared with me. These pics show the needle palms during the freeze of January, 2019.

Butia recommendation for Gulf Coast 8B?
by Manalto- 6 replies

Pindo palm (Butia odorata) is a common sight in this region, some of them quite large and beautiful. My planting space in full sun is limited. I'm just becoming acquainted with the other species of Butia and see that B. catarinensis is smaller in maturity. Would you recommend it for my climate? Does this species have the glaucous blue coloration that we often see on pindo? Other butia suggestions?

Here in Chicago, we have been in spring weather for so long, the privets started growing back, and in december, after our 13F, the elephant ears pushed out new growth, currently, weather report says we will be below 10F temperatures for 4 days, 2 days below 5F, one day -1F. Not a problem to my palm tree, the insulated box does well, and the cannas and elephant ears are well mulched and have started regrowing, its hard to keep up everyday to cut the new growth but they stopped right after the new years.

Hello everyone, i am new to the hobby. I picked up two windmill palms last year. They grew decent. Just picked up two more this year. For some reason they seem to be getting brown and yellow toward the ends and they are not growing as well. I fertilized them at the beginning of this season And i try to water them once a week. I am just a little lost on how to care for them at this point. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Why is my trachy yellowing at leaf bases?
by newtopalmsMD- 1 follower

I have a potted Trachy and I noticed this morning that fronds are turning yellow at the end of each petiole where the leaves attach (see first picture below) Every frond is doing this. The petioles are green, it's just the leaf bases. I have not seen this before. The pot sits outside in the sun for most of the time (southern exposure) and is taken into the garage after sundown if night time temperature is predicted below 20 F. On really cold days or snow events it also stays in the garage under grow lights with the rest of its stable mates. (second picture) Garage is not heated and is usually in low 40's in winter. On the recent 9 degree F night it dropped to 36…

I have always loved trees particularly palm trees. We’re in North Carolina and this past spring my local Home Depot was selling Queen Palms so I bought two and planted them in a sunny spot in my yard I live in hardiness zone 8a. During the summer the palms did great well daytime temperatures were around 95° to 105° they are each now about 10 feet tall but then winter rolled around and we had our first frost in November where it got down below 22°. Did you find the first few freezes? I covered the trunks with burlap and watered them daily but recently they have started looking a bit scraggly normally temperatures at night to get down to anywhere from for 40° to 35° well da…

These palms are 10 years old now, with the current image in the lower right corner. They have gone through a winter with a low of 11F and a summer with 70 days above 100F. Unprotected, not irrigated, no fertilizer. Texas tough.

What is recommended to ensure cutting tools are sanitized between use on different Palms (especially new arrivals to the garden)? Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol? Hydrogen Peroxide? Diluted Bleach & Water Solution? I currently have a Felco F-2 Classic Manual Hand Pruner for trimming old brown fronds off, if something bigger is needed I have a Corona 10” RazorTooth Folding Pruning Saw and a Fiskers 12’ Pole Saw for my big Washy. edit: I also use a Victorinox 6.7631 3 1/4” Serrated Paring Knife w/ Large Red Handle to cut suckering trunks from smaller and Dwarf Palms with “scalpel-like” precision. Thanks
