Why is Sabal mexicana seldom grown east of Texas? 1 2

I suspect it is because most growers in the Southeast don't think about it. It is seldom supplied by nurseries because the default of its type for the region is the common S. palmetto. The two species look so similar anyway. However, it might be just different enough to add a little unique flavor to the landscape. I'm sure someone is apt to mention that S. Mexicana is better adapted to the drier climate of Texas but if it can be grown in humid Houston why not elsewhere? Likewise, cold hardiness should not be an issue for the deep South anyway. Also, I am wondering how far north can S. Mexicana be cultivated in the south central US? My guess is to the Red River, or ju…

Bald Head Island Palmetto Seed Collecting Trip 1 2

I was working on the Cape Fear River next to Bald Head Island yesterday, and had to kill around 30 mins to let the tide drop so I could access the equipment I had deployed... Anyhow, I took advantage of that bit of time to go out on one of the undeveloped marsh islands to collect some Sabal palmetto seed. Early Feb seems to be the best time to collect fresh fruit from the native palms. Since the island where I was collecting seed is separate from the developed portion of BHI, the seeds I collected should be pure "BHI" strain palmetto. I didn't have much time to explore or collect many seeds, but I did end up with a couple hundred (ish?). I will onl…

What to plant here? 1 2

So, I have this area on the western side of my house that gets sun from about 12:30-1:00 to sometime later in the evening (maybe 6:30 to 7:00). It gets slightly dappled sun in the later evening but mostly full sun. A few palms come to mind but they all like shade. I really want to utilize this area as it gets nice wind protection from all sides, a concrete pathway near it, eaves that create a bit of frost protection, and a nice reflective wall. I really think this is one of the best microclimates around my house, but I just don't know what palm would be good to plant here. I would prefer a palm that is rated for 9a, as I would like to try to zone push something here. So i…

Palm freeze protection 1 2

Hey palmtalkers. So here in Lake Charles they are forecasting around 20 for a low over the next few nights! Terrible... But I have a few Queen palms. The tallest is about 20ft. A bismarck that is about 7 ft and a phoenix roebelenii that is about 5ft. Along with a myer lemon, satsuma, lila avocado and a grapefruit tree. I bought a bunch of fabrick and heat lamps and some heat tape. I plan on doing a heat lamp on the bismarck, citrus, and definitely the phoenix. What do y'all think? Should they all be okay? What about the queen palms? Should I bother protecting the 20 footer? Any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Everyone in the Southeast... Check your spears! 1 2

After this very wet winter we've had so far, it's not surprising that I've had spear pull on 2 of my L. Nitida's and 1 of my P. Sylvestris'. All 3 are still seedlings, although I would have never seen it coming for my Nitida's. A deep a green color and very healthy looking, I would have never guessed. I've brought them all inside for any below freezing temperatures for most of the winter but of course left them outside in the rain. Bad idea. Check your spears!!!!!! I'm a bit depressed, but I'm holding out hope. I just poured hydrogen peroxide down the hatch on all 3. Going to post some pics tomorrow. You'll be amazed at how healthy they look, but for now it's quite th…

i received my new Jub two days ago and it doesn't look very well. The seller claims that it was damaged during shipping. I will not mention who I bought this from if anyone would want to know. I am looking for some advice how to treat it and get it back to its best shape. I applied hydrogen peroxide today to the spear. Also will apply liquid fertilizer to it following the advice of a fellow member. I am posting a few pics of the damaged palm with the spear pulled.

Where Can I find 5-8ft tall Trachycarpus Fortunei in Texas 1 2

Never thought I’d ask this question, but I think I have a place for them that the soil might work. I could work with 3-4 feet of trunk or more. I could also go with 15-30 gallon container Sabals. otherwise I’ll have to go with something like evergreen oak leaf hollys. Houston Garden Center have them?

Exotic looking palms for zone 9a/8b? 1 2

Im on the border of zone 9a and 8b. The USDA map puts me in zone 9a, but I’d feel more comfortable with a palm that can handle at least 8b winters. To me windmill palms and needle palms are not attractive, so those are out the picture. I have a mule palm, but it’s not doing it’s best thanks to my dog who decided it would make a good chew toy. Does anyone have any suggestions for a palm with a little more of a tropical flare than say a sabal palm, but still hardy in my zone?

Hello , I'm kind of tired of waiting years and years for my small palms to get to a decent size so I was planing to purchase a couple of large Trachycarpus Fortunei this spring, around 6ft tall. I know they should be fine short term, but I wouldn't want them to die after a cold blast that could get down to -5F/-20C for a few hours. Usually when that happens, temperatures stay more or less below freezing for the better part of the week, but not nearly as cold as -5F. These cold blasts should only happen once every 5+ years, but I don't wanna spend a lot of money on mature palms if they have no chance of surviving. Does any of you have any experience with them in …

Pacific Northwest Arctic Outbreak - Protection methods 1 2

What's everyone's plans for protecting? I keep looking at the weather and one hour it looks ok, then boom it looks really bad. I guess my big Trachys are on their own. Small palms I'm planning on making frames and then cover in frost fabric with mini lights inside. Butias to get mini lights around the growing point and frost fabric as best I can around the crown. Citrus need to be protected as well. It looks like we'll be getting a lot rain, then wet snow, then the cold hits. - Terrible combo. This is easily the worst predicted stretch of weather I've seen here by a long shot. I normally don't even have one day stay below freezing and my winter ultimate lo…

Adam Black, the former director of Peckerwood gardens (now JFGardens), shared some pics of the gardens on Facebook last week. I got some more after we were messaging about damage to the palms. He is documenting the damage to these palms in the area so we're bound to get some more good information from that effort too! Permission to share. Big credit to Adam! Pic 1 (Text in quotations from Adam): "If you zoom into the center background, you can see the freeze-damaged (but recoverable) Brahea bella juxtaposed over several totally-unscathed, silvery Sabal uresana, grown from wild-provenance seed from Sonora." Pic 2: "The haunting presence of backlit, freeze-damaged…

I just potted some sabal minor "Louisiana" seedlings I purchased online from a palm nursery in Florida. I've done some research on this variety and my plan is to overwinter them inside and then plant them in the ground next May. If any of you have had any experience with this specific palm in I would appreciate some advice/tips. Thanks Here's a picture of them:

What's wrong with my mule?!?! 1 2
by Sean.N.GulfBreeze- 1 follower

This mule was planted back in February of 2021. It did great until roughly August, when I noticed one of the lower fronds browned (more of a gray) quite quickly. It gets plenty of water, as it's next to 3 larger/healthy mules planted 2 years ago. I didn't think it was a big deal, so I cut the frond off. Another month goes by and another one has browned and I cut it off. Fast forward till late October, 3 additional fronds have browned. I'm not really sure what's going on? Wilt? Lethal bronzing? I'm at the point where I wanna rip it out. One thing I thought of is, over the summer, our dog chewed up one of the fronds pretty badly and I didn't remove it right away. …

“Beast” Trachycarpus - none better anywhere. 1 2

I call this one “The Beast”. Probably the best looking representative of the species. Found in the Mississippi neighborhood here in Portland. The tree originally came from the famed plantsman Sean Hogan. Apparently the owner is an elderly lady who does zero for this palm. I think it’s tapped into some sort of reliable water supply perhaps a leaky water or sewer pipe. Enjoy!
