Here is my BxS from two years ago and updated photo now. Not the fastest for me, but seems very hardy so far. Maybe 10 12 years in the ground from a seedling. Anyone else having any luck with this mule palm?

Are You Nuts? You can't grow palm trees here!

Howdy Folks, So through many experiments from so called "zone pushers" and the unforeseen cold snaps in recent years in places such as ST. George, Utah and the polar vortex affecting 49 states, plunging even south Florida into the 20s, we know palms of all varieties are much more cold hardy then once thought. So I'm interested to know, who out there lives in places where palms "Don't grow" or where conventional wisdom tells us they're not supposed to grow. There's a LOT of tales out there from folks who live in palmy climates like Southern Arizona or the Carolinas zone pushing with coconuts or other extremely tropical plants. That's not the purpose of this particular…

Zone 7B Record low temps 2021

We just moved here from Iowa 1 1/2 years ago to get away from the cold and snow. We bought a 12 foot Windmill Palm last June from our local landscaping business saying it is cold hardy for this area. Now we had record lows and it hasn’t even been planted a year. It was below freezing for 10 days straight with the lowest -5 during night and 11 during 11. We wrapped the trunk with burlap and a moving blanket and then the snow also piled up around it. We have no idea if it will survive or not. I guess we will find out. We live in Arkansas now. First picture is with the snow Second picture is after the snow melted off Third picture is after it was planted

Cincinnati palms part 2

In my previous post, I shared some pictures of some established needle palms that were planted at a Cincinnati restaurant in about 2009 that never get any special protection of any kind. Here are some pictures that were taken by another local palm enthusiast and shared with me. These pics show the needle palms during the freeze of January, 2019.

Sabal minor germination ease
by ShadyDan- 5 replies
- 1.3k views
Hey Folks, Long time PT lurker first time poster. Thought I would share my experience with Sabal minor “Cherokee” germination. I bought ~1,000 of these seeds form RPS recently, and I am seeing ~99% germination within a month of sowing. And I though Washingtonias were easy to germinate! Now I have to find home for all these babies in my greenhouse... I was hoping for a little more of a staggered germination! Looking forward to sharing with some friends in some colder Canadian locales (Okanagan, Niagara region) where they may be able to survive once they size up a little.

Sabal domingensis has a similar native range to carusiaum so I expect a few hybrids.

This is bad. Ft. Worth is having rotating outages. 1 2 3

Just read a post from a fellow member on another forum who lives in the Ft. Worth area. Said his outdoor temp was at 6F and their utility was saying rotating outages were starting and asking for conservation. He just posted he lost power and his house heat had been set to 62F which to me is already pretty cold. Apart from devastated landscaping, concerns over frozen pipes (let your water drip in your sinks), now we have real concerns about people loosing power/heat and getting so cold inside they get sick on top of covid rates high. Heart goes out to all of you in this freeze.

Possible hardy strains of palms
by EastCanadaTropicals- 11 replies
Have any of you got any palms that survived an unexpectedly cold freeze? Seen any palms survive below their intended cold hardiness, or at least know of some obscure strains? After the Texas freeze, we might see some new hardy cultivars appear in the market. I would love to have a hardy strain of a butia from somewhere in Texas. The problem is, even those hardy cultivars would be a challenge, since they wouldn't like durated cold.

I have been thinking about protecting palms in extreme freezes. Moving palms indoors or protection with a heat source seems to be most effective, however, moving palms is not always practical for everyone and some palms hate their root systems disturbed. I know folks use Christmas lights but they aren't always ideal either. In severe freezes, power outages may render then ineffective. Also, a lot of palm are in locations where there's no power. I was wondering whether there are any low cost, battery-powered products that may generate heat and can be wrapped around a trunk. I am guessing this mostly applies to small and medium-sized palms. I have found battery powere…

Just my brain going off in Sci-Fi land over here, but I was looking at the classifications of both Rhapidophyllum hystrix and Trachycarpus fortunei. They are the exact same all the way down to subfamily, only splitting at genus. Kingdom: Plantae Clade: Tracheophytes Clade: Angiosperms Clade: Monocots Clade: Commelinids Order: Arecales Family: Arecaceae Subfamily: Coryphoideae Tribe: Trachycarpeae …

Ice Ice Baby... Preparing

Funny Title, but no laughing for those out in Texas and the surrounding areas being hit by some extreme winter chaos. Alabama is in a very interesting spot for this winter storm, half of the state being in a winter storm warning, and half either having no impact, or flooding. I am 1 single county away from the winter storm WATCH with the possibility of freezing rain, and a predicted (and I cant stress "predicted" enough because of how much its changed) of 18F. So, in order to prepare the best I can, I wrapped what I could, and stuffed frost cloth into the crowns of the Chamaerops Palms. Mind you - you do NOT KNOW PAIN until you've attempted…

Polar vortex Palms in Portland - First round 1 2
by Chester B- 60 replies

Last night the rain turned to freezing rain as the cold air from the Columbia river gorge met a warm wet system coming off the Pacific Ocean. More freezing rain for me than snow, and we bottomed out at 26F or -3C. Today we'll be around 29F or -1C which is the first day in 5 years we failed to go above freezing. Tonight a much wetter system is moving in and will bring close to a foot of snow to some areas of North and East Portland whereas areas to south (like me) can expect up to 1" of freezing rain. Currently its snowing lightly. As far as protection most palms will be on their own, I threw a few buckets over some small more tender seedlings, and wrapped the g…

What’s the consensus on cold hardiness of the hybrids? 20 F is bearing down on me and I’m freaking out about butia x parajubaea. Would I be worried if I had butia x syagrus instead?

New Sabals - What do I do!?
by ahosey01- 2 replies

My buddy went to Jungle Music this weekend and brought me back a Sabal causiarum and Sabal etonia - two I've wanted for a long time. I'll stick the causiarum in the ground, no problem. But I don't know how much water to give it. Can someone help out here? Is it like a palmetto where it likes drowning? The soil is good in that spot. On the heavy side but drains well, rich in nutrients and basically pH neutral. As for the etonia - it's a tiny little thing. Looks like one of those window herb starter plants you'd get at Ace Hardware. One strap leaf and that's it. What the hell do I do with it? I assume it's too sensitive to stick in the ground, plus I seem…

Sabal minor & Needle Palm in Z6a
by ColumbusPalm- 11 replies

Hello Everyone, I should start with an introduction, I'm Nate and have been into cold hardy palms for a long time. When I was just in my early teens I overwintered a Trachy up in Toledo which was a 5b at that point. Going on 30 and with a house now, I am planning to try some Sabal minors and Needle's this spring in Z6a Columbus, OH. If anyone has any tips for this climate and species, please share! Here is a picture of my enclosure for my Yucca rostrata that I planted last spring. It still looks great under there. I dug out a huge area for this bed and it is conditioned with lots of sand. It is burlap with a clear painters tarp staked over it to pr…

Cold Hardy Palm Reaction
by GregVirginia7- 1 reply
Question...we got iced over yesterday which brought out an observable change in my Needle and Trachy’s palmate leaf segments: The segments get a striped appearance with different shades of green. I’ve seen it every winter, especially when temps are consistently in the teens or twenties...my Minors do the same thing. It obviously has something to do with cold hardiness...the first picture is my Needle and much less pronounced than my Trachy’s reaction and arguably, the Needle is more cold hardy than the Trachy...just wondering...

Protection question - heating cables
by KellerAg- 0 replies
Hello everyone, I’ve read this forum for a long time but never posted. I’m in Keller, TX (8a I believe) and I wanted to ask if anyone had experience with the pipe heating cables available at Home Depot? I wrapped all of my palms/cycads in burlap and then used the pipe heating cables, followed by landscape fabric and then a 9 mil tarp. The species are Mediterranean fans, butia capitata, cycas revoluta, cycas taitungensis, cycas panzhihuaensis and a hybrid tait x panzi. With the exception of yesterday afternoon for about 3-4 hours, the temp has been below freezing since Thursday which is when I did all of this prep. The heating cables hav…
