Jubaea chilensis growth

New member with a couple of photos of the favorite palm in my yard. Picked this one up in early spring as a very pot bound 5g. It had split the pot wide open and appeared to have been that way for a long time. Nothing but roots in the pot and it was light as a feather. Put it in the ground and it really took off. Hoping these are not as slow as a lot of people report because I'm not that young anymore. If anyone has tricks to speed them up I'd sure appreciate it.

Dwarf sabals

I’ve got some room in the middle of a raised bed and want to fill it with more palms, but even a sabal minor would be too tall. Anyone know where to source some of the dwarf varieties of sabal like blountstown or wakulla? Was driving from Panama City beach to Kissimmee a few years back and drove through Blountstown, FL I had my eyes peeled for a nursery, the wife would have killed me if I stopped to buy “another plant” lol.

Gonna do the imidacloprid drench - what are my palm's heights??
by PricklyPearSATC- 1 follower

I'm doing the imidacloprid drench for my sabal minors and sabal brazoria because I've had problems with the ox beetle in the past and I just know I'm gonna get a bumper crop this year. But how on earth do I measure their heights? Do I measure the trunks or from the ground to the highest frond? The minors have no trunk, the brazoria has a 6 inch trunk. But if I measure from the ground to the top of the highest frond, then the brazoria is at least 6 feet and the sabal minors are about 2.5 feet. I'm confused. Thank you!

Butia After Severe Freeze

Anyone having any luck with pure Butia in central Texas? Initially several of the largest in the area looked like they had some green in the center. However, now more than a month later they look worse. These experience around 5F. I must have had too much faith in their cold hardiness? Should they be trunk cut now that the green is fading? I am asking for someone who has 7 nice ones that is hesitating. Copper fungicide applied and last checked a couple weeks and only 1 spear pulled then.

Is it possible to grow a Sabal Palmetto in zone 7b? I have seen a few here but I have no clue if they are protected. I was thinking I could protect one (if I get one) for the first two years to let it get established and then leave it unprotected for the rest of the winters after. What do you think?

Brown on Trachycarpus leaves.
by PlantDad- 2 replies

I had a customer come into my work with questions about his trachycarpus leaves. I told him that I wasn't sure what was going on but I would try to find an answer. That brown is at the base of some leaves. And it's not on the older fronds, more on the newer ones. Does anyone know what is going on with his palms? Thanks

If you were to make a list of common to exotic palms that are nearly bulletproof after Feb 2021 for Zone 9b/10a Texas, what are they? What can you grow that the rest of Texas cannot? What should be some other unusual to essential companion plants that should be planted there for a “tropical” look or a Texas Tough Landscape.

Replacement palm ideas 1 2

Give me some suggestions for palms to replace my two large Robusta, when they eventually kick the bucket. They were super slender, beautiful, and tall One was about 40 feet tall and the other about 25 feet tall. I love the slender palm look, even though I also have Filifera in my yard. I have room for maybe 4-6 palms once these are eventually taken down, should they not recover. Should I: 1. Replace the Robusta with more Robusta, realizing that this may have been a 50 year freeze. 2. Find hardier palms to replace them with and basically not worry about freezes anymore. I don't have decades to wait, I need fast growing palms. My tall Robusta w…

Here is an update on my Jubaea x Syagrus Hybrid that was planted in March 2015. The palm is growing however I am not seeing explosive growth that I was expecting or have seen from others. So far so good though... the trunk is very solid and this is mainly where I see most of the changes thus far. Here is March 2015 right after planting..
