I bought this palm last week and just put it in the ground this evening. It has two emerging spears, and I noticed today that the oldest of the two has some yellow discoloration on the bottom of it. The same spear has also split down the middle since I bought the palm. I also noticed that one of the newer fronds has begun to fold in a bit: Here's a view of the whole plant: Thankfully the other trachys I bought last week aren't having any issues, but this one is concerning me a bit. Could it be the early signs of root rot, or am I just being paranoid?

Long story short I'm in the market for a new trachy. I'm in central Virginia where they aren't unheard of, but still not always easy to find. At this point the options within my budget appear to be either getting a larger, more established tree, 15 gal, 4-5ft that was brought in from further south (i.e. FL, gulf coast, etc), OR a smaller tree that's been grown closer to my locality, i.e. 5 gal, 1-2ft. I've read conflicting advice about what's more important for hardiness & health: where it was grown versus initial size. Any thoughts or experience? I'm usually a cheapskate with plants, often rescuing clearance stuff from shops, getting suckers from fri…

Spacing for palm trees?
by maskedmole- 1 reply

So I'm running out of room. Does it matter if I plant a trachycarpus only a few feet away from a southern magnolia or a needle palm? Or will they fight to the death over nutrients/water/sunlight? Does spacing really matter all that much?

Sabal Birmingham problem?

I am in zone 7a MD, which had a mild winter (I don't think any night was below 5F). I also had about 6 inches of oak leaf mulch around the plant over the winter. I planted this Sabal Birmingham in April of last summer, so this was the first winter in the ground. I have clay soil. It did fine in the summer and I fertilized with Miracle Gro palm tree food. As you can see the two newest fronds have brown tips. Also the two oldest fronds are done. Should I be worried about the condition of this Sabal and if so is there anything I should do? Also I noted that a more established sabal minor has just the very ends of tips (half inch?) of newer fronds a bit brown, bu…

I bought a couple 3gal windmills today, and I’m considering planting one of them in a spot that is pretty close to a brick wall. How much space do they typically need? Would 3 feet off the wall be enough?

this is my first time owning a Sylvester Palm so I’m not familiar with these at all. I got it on clearance at Lowe’s and decided to give it a shot, it was already looking a little dry and pale when I bought it. check out the center new growth. Some of it looks pale bluish greenish but crispy and the older growth is more green but is also yellowing on the end of the fronds. how can this palm be helped?

So I noticed today one of my Mediterranean fan palms had spear pull. It already had some yellowing going on before winter started and it’s first year in ground. My other small one also had some winter burn on the spear but I had relocated it in the winter. Zone 8b enterprise AL.

So is my Trachy a boy? Pictures aren’t that great but flowers are very yellow...still hoping to see a hermaphroditic flower spike since my other Trachy is very young, has years to go till it flowers and I have no idea if it’s male or female...I know that would be a very rare occurrence but that would be interesting...

Help with a struggling trachycarpus fortunei
by jons0027- 1 follower

Purchased a trachycarpus fortunei from a local nursery & planted last spring. Gets partial sun, sheltered in corner of garden. Mostly clay soil but I amended it with plenty of potting mix. Everything else we planted last year has been thriving, but this windmill is looking pretty rough. First two are from right now. Leaves are obviously shriveling/browning. Second two pictures are after planting last spring with healthier fronds. No evidence of growth, but no spear pull yet. Perhaps what worries me even more is the small plant still feels incredibly wobbly, like it was just dropped in the ground and hasn't rooted out at all. At what point should these sta…

Update from the Bronx, NY. I dont even bother to protect it anymore, this Trachy loves the winter!!! Grows at least a foot a year. Been in the ground at least 8 years. Had it delivered from Chilly palms, In North Carolina. Definitely a eye catcher and a conversation piece. Yes, you can successfully grow windmills in NYC.. GOOD LUCK TO ALL YOU PALM GROWERS UP NORTH. looking foward to hearing your comments and suggestions.

Texas 21' Arctic blast - the unprotected

I managed to pack up every palm in the garden but I left a couple completely unprotected (extras, experiments, etc...). These were pictures taken yesterday (everything now is under 3 inches of snow). Pic 1 - Sabal Causuarum. This one was supposed to be 'Lisa' but didn't turn out to have the characteristics. I gladly threw it to the elements! Pic 2 - Sabal Minor var Cherokee . This is possibly the most cold hardy sabal minor in the world. Native to North Alabama. But, as you can see, it's still a tiny stapling. Pic 3 - Chamaerops humilis. This one is in an open spot in the yard. Pic 4 - Chamaerops humilis. In front of the house. Pic 5 - Rhapidophyllum hystr…

Chameadorea Elegans rescue from Ikea
by EastCanadaTropicals- 7 replies

Ikea was selling a few non-artificial cacti and palm tress in small containers. I don't think the conditions were too great, as the palm pots had lots of roots sticking out of them. I chose a Chameadorea Elegans, which I repoted, and fertilized with palm tree fertilizer. It was already looking pretty okay from the beginning, but now it's gonna perform a lot better. I apologize for the garbage photo quality, I had to use my webcam as my camera.

I have four Sabal minor 'Arkansas' seeds that are refusing to germinate. I got five seeds from ebay of Sabal minor 'Arkansas' and one germinated using the baggy method. After a while of the other not germinating I then put the four remaining into a pot on my deck. Nothing. So now I want to give it one last try, I may use my hearing mat but most of the times I do not get good results with it. I am assuming it is because I have it on all the time instead of having it on during the day and off at night. Has anyone ever gotten any seeds that refused to germinate to germinate? The seeds are still hard and do not float.

Trachy fertilizer

Hello! Is it recommended to fertilize trachys and if so, what type of blend do I want? I tried googling, but there wasn't any consistent info. Some sites said 10-10-10, others said a different blend was best. My palm is going on it's 3rd year with me and seems to be doing ok in the clay soil I amended with palm mix. If I do fertilize, do I just want to spread the granules around the base and water it in? Thanks!
