Wondering if the cicadas will do any damage to my palms...I remember well the damage they did to the local trees last time around...my palms weren’t here then...seems to me the petioles are way too hard...hope that’s the case. Seems the cool spring (May) we’ve had did a number on them as a lot are DOA up to splitting their shell and climbing out...also have seen a lot of dead ones with malformed wings but still billions to go...

Does anyone know if many pindo palms survived after the big freeze in Dallas or Austin? I'm in Raleigh and I planted one in my yard a few months ago. We don't typically get as cold as it got in both of those locations so my thought is that if pindos survived that, mine should do ok. And I do expect to have to protect it a few times a year.

My great experiment continues… I am thrilled with the Waggy, but after the poll of hardiness, I do wish I would’ve invested in a fortunei this size. With protection, I am hoping to pull it through. I’m going to make a greenhouse like structure for it and use ceramic heat bulbs during the coldest days/nights. Will grow this Brazoria in a pot for the season and try it when I move to 6b next year. I’m pretty certain this is a Butia Capita, considering 90% of the Butias in my area are Capita (from what I’ve been told). I just wanted the experts opinion. These aren’t great pictures, so I apologize. The trunk is actually longer than it appears. Most of it is covered because a good portion of the trunk is almost horizontal to the ground before it curves up. I’ve been told it’s been here for over 70 years. The smaller one is a baby I transplanted from it about 5 years ago. It gets 80% shade, so the fronds are long and stringy looking.

I have solid evidence of Sabal Palmetto growing in the outer banks. Specifically in Hatteras NC. I have seen them before in the wild years ago but didn’t take any pictures and I had regretted that ever since. So I decided to go back to the site to take pictures as solid proof they still exist on the island. I have indeed 100% confirmed these are Sabal Palmetto palms that are growing there. The palmettos were limited at the site and were in much smaller amounts than the known Sabal minor that exists in the same area. As my garden gets bigger, I find myself wanting to fill dead space with understory palms. So far I've got a few needles, a sable minor, and a few Chamaerops humilis (maybe not exactly "understory" but I use it for the same function). They're all quite small, most are brand new to me. I've also got a few Arenga engleri's and Chamaedorea microspadix, but those are marginal where I live and will eventually need protection or perish, and I don't really include them in my list of dependable palms here. I thought my Filibusta was doing well after the freeze, but I had several spears pull this afternoon. There is still green on some of the boots. Any thoughts on chances of survival? I protected the heart with Christmas lights and burlap.

Posting this topic in Cold Hardy since it's about northerly zone expansion. Depending what cold hardiness zone map you refer to, the Lake City, north Florida area would mostly be an 8b or barely 9a zone. Lake City is about 30 miles north of Gainesville, FL. Easily found on the map where I10 & I75 intersect... that's pretty darn north Florida. Looking around the area I was surprised to find as many Queen Palms thriving. As a reference, we all know how bad the 2010 winter was and the 2018 winter had temps that remained below freezing for hours! Trachycarpus x fortunei

Last year (maybe before), and this year, the local Home Depots stock and sell some regular Trachycarpus fortunei first. When those run out and they get resupplied, they sell "Trachycarpus x fortunei". My last biology class was in high school 20 years ago, but I'm pretty sure "x" means it's a hybrid between 2 species. Last year I came to the conclusion that these were fortunei/wagnerianus hybrids due mainly to the shape of the fronds. I should also mention that these are $25 for 5 gallons, which are cheaper than the straight "Trachycarpus fortunei" they sell earlier in the season. Washingtonia Robusta transplant shock help! Two week ago I planted a 3.5m Washi from the pot into a raised dry bed and now the lower fronds are deep yellow and some dried already. Since in the ground, I'm watering properly every two days. Today I gave it a good drench with a palm booster. Apparently, it helps with stressed palms. Let's see. Normally the shock occurs when the tree is relocated from the ground to the ground. At least that's my experience, this is not the case. I should mention the soil in the pot had a lot of clay in it especially next to the trunk. I've backfilled the hole with 50/50 JI and sandy gravel. Am I doing something wrong or should I be patient…

I’ve done a lot of complaining about the slow growth rate of my McCurtain and Brazoria Sabals...Granted, they are slow growers anyway but I think I made them even slower by not watering them enough...unless there was a serious drought, I would let the rain do it for the most part. But this year, I’ve taken to watering them by hand 2-3 times a week, regardless of rain and Of course, they are growing at a much faster rate than before. Sounds really stupid, but I was going on the assumption that they take care of themselves. Planted this when I moved out my parents at my current home like 3 years ago in Tennessee. It's in pretty much full shade under oak trees and a concrete wall behind it to the north so it is somewhat shielded by northern wind by many trees and the wall. Some little sunlight sometimes penetrates at certain times of the day like morning time I think so maybe you could say somewhat part shade. I don't think it will end up being very big but I kind of like the look it has in the shade. First picture with the blanket was in December 2017 mulched up. I have a 40 year old 28' windmill palm that hasn't recovered from the 2018 freeze in Virginia. I lost some other windmills, but this one is in a more sheltered location. The emerging leaves are small - maybe 1/2 to 2/3 the size of the healthy leaves it had before the freeze. It only puts out 2 or 3 a year. I'm afraid it's just too tall to recover. I've tried foliar feeding. I hate to just cut it, so I'll leave it as long as there is some green at the top; but I'm hoping that some of the experts on here can come to the rescue.
