The first is a Fourtuni. The nicest one I've ever raised. It's 3 years old I think. Next is waggie x Princeps. 3rd Vancouver Waggie. Last is Nanus x Waggie. I have 7 or 8 of these. They are slow growing.

Sabal causarium seedlings

Really happy with the speed of these, especially considering the crappy cold spring / early summer we have had in the PNW. Lots of overcast, cool, and rainy days have slowed things down, even in my greenhouse. I germinated these in the spring (March / April ish) and they are already working on strap leave #2. We are just starting to have some consistent nice weather with 30C days in my greenhouse, so I'm expecting growth to go even faster. Looking forward to putting one of these in the ground one day. They supposedly take a fair bit of cold despite their tropical origins.

Sabal palmetto vs birmingham hardiness 1 2

I thought this was a pretty good testament to the difference in hardiness between sabal palmetto and birmingham sabals. I don't think we got below 10F to 12F at my house this winter, though we did have a spell or two where we went between 2 to 3 days without getting above freezing. We had a few small snow events, none more than about 1.5" at a time. The birmingham is in the SW corner of an L-shaped bed on the south and west sides of my garage. Both are shielded from north winds by the house. Here is the difference between the two at my house given the above winter conditions:

Hello everyone I am planning to install a trachycarpus (either fortunei or wagnerianus, preferably the latter) next to a wall in my garden. As I am located in 6b hardiness zone, house walls are my huge friends as they provide a bit of warm air in the winter. I was wondering how far should those palms be installed not to get their leaves interrupted by the wall? Kind regards Maciej

For any TX peeps here, I just grabbed a small L. Rotundifolia in a 6" pot for $12 at HEB of all places. I don't believe I've ever seen them for sale anywhere locally before. This one came from the League City store on 96 but I'm sure they all have them.

Tropical Shade Garden in Myrtle Beach

Ok so, I'm thinking of starting a shade/partial shade garden on my north/northeastern side of my house. Some of these species I have listed will obviously require protection or other special requirements. Please suggest any plants that would be good for a shade/partial shade garden. Let me know if some of these plants would be a complete mistake. Just for reference, I live in a Humid Sub-tropical Zone 8b. Although, I have managed to prove that I can grow an Ostrich Fern here, which I didn't think I was suppose to be able to do. Which makes me think that it is a more cool Humid Sub-tropical climate, maybe a little closer to an Oceanic climate than the usual Humid Sub-tropi…

Sabal uresana in Austin, Texas 1 2 3

The recent polar vortex nuclear winter event caused immense destruction in many ways and I lost about 25% of my landscape. I had a low of 8F on morning of February 15th and 7F on morning of February 16th. Starting on previous Thursday there was freezing rain that was followed by a large snowfall event then freezing rain then more snow. Temperatures remained below freezing for a consecutive 144 hours. The Sabal uresana individuals in my yard had to remain uncovered as I ran out of freeze covers since I had put them on all my more sensitive plants. I have two forms of Sabal uresana in my yard. One is a faster growing lighter blue variety that purportedly was collected at sl…

I know the other TX threads are getting long and there's a lot of technical weather talk going on in there so I figured I'd start a new thread to document my prep and eventual outcome for Palmageddon. Just spent the day getting ready, and while I still have a little more to do tomorrow, this is basically what I'm gonna ride or die with. I'm in League City TX and as of right now the forecast is showing 24 Sunday night, 32 Monday, and 15 Monday night with a rebound of a balmy 39 on Tuesday. The following is my prep: ~10' OA Mule- sheet, C9's' moving blankets, 6mil plastic 3+' CT P. Rupicola- sheet, 2 strand C9's, moving blanket, 6mil plastic, shrink wrap ~…

My Jubaea X Butia F2 Hybrid 1 2

I bought my hybrid from Jungle Music back in June of 2011. It was smaller, in a tree pot which I think might be a three gallon size. It has been in the ground for three years and two months. The growth of it is very fast. I would put it on par this year with a fortunei or faster. The trunk is really getting thickness to it.It is not only faster than a butia, but it seems to take less damage in the winter. It sailed through the coldest night here back in January; it dropped to 10F that night. I did have a frost cloth thrown over it, but it blew off sometime that night. The cloth was over halfway off, and the palm was exposed. I highly recommend this palm! Here are pictures…

Bald Head Island Palmetto Seed Collecting Trip 1 2

I was working on the Cape Fear River next to Bald Head Island yesterday, and had to kill around 30 mins to let the tide drop so I could access the equipment I had deployed... Anyhow, I took advantage of that bit of time to go out on one of the undeveloped marsh islands to collect some Sabal palmetto seed. Early Feb seems to be the best time to collect fresh fruit from the native palms. Since the island where I was collecting seed is separate from the developed portion of BHI, the seeds I collected should be pure "BHI" strain palmetto. I didn't have much time to explore or collect many seeds, but I did end up with a couple hundred (ish?). I will onl…

Sabal multiple flowering times?
by teddytn- 2 followers

This is today Sept. 10th. Some sort of small/ dwarf Sabal minor. Has 4 seed stalks with seeds starting to turn darker/ ripen. And shot a new inflorescence up 👀👇🏻A bunch of us were talking about sabals cross pollinating, someone brought up different flowering times. I’ve never seen this happen on any other Sabal I’ve had flower. I’d have to look back I think it was end of May beginning of June when it originally flowered. Anyone else had this happen?

Too much or too little water
by UncleBobbyB- 4 replies

This windmill palm has been in the ground 18 months, and all of the sudden it's leaves are folding/thinning. I have read that it is hard to over water these palms. I was watering 2-4 times a week. I have not watered in 7 days and the soil is still showing "wet". Did I over water it, and what can I do next.

Multi-point temperature sensor
by zimm- 4 replies

I am sorry for having to ask this as I've seen a post somewhere with a 4-5 position temperature sensor but cannot find it. I'm looking for one of those weather station devices that has an indoor unit that displays temperatures and multiple outdoor sensors I can place - ideally so I can get garage temp (overwintering seedlings), back yard temp (general year round outdoor air temp), plus several I can place on prized palms under frost cloth/christmas lights to ensure temperatures are OK. Any recommendations on something you love? Minimum 3 sensors ideally. Thanks!

New Cycad flush laying down?
by KellerAg- 2 replies
Hey everyone! I read this forum often but I don’t really post. I have a hybrid cycad that I grew from a seed. It’s a taitungensis x panzhihuaensis. It’s about 4 years old now and it’s growing great I think. It just flushed for the second time this season (finished flushing 4 days ago maybe) but after the last few days, the new fronds all started to lay down. I don’t think it’s rot but I guess that’s a possibility. It rained a lot last week but it’s been plenty warm here so I think that would be odd. Does anyone know if this is just normal behavior for some cycads? Any help would be much appreciated!

When to start protecting Palms
by bgifford- 7 replies

Hello everyone! I have a few Palms that I have planted earlier this Year (Washingtonia robusta x2 5years old, ground to top frond almost 6ft and Trachycarpus fortunei x1 was is 3 Gal pot before planting) I do of course plan to protect them well (Washy's with a Box). However, when do you decide it's time to wrap/box them up. What is the temperature where you say it's too cold now and start protecting them. Do you completely protect them or give them supplemental heat until it get's to the too cold temperatures. Since this is my first time protecting I was just curious. I have read a lot and watched a lot of Youtube videos, but that;s the info I was not …

Craigslist for FREE they said! After 2 days some sketchy moments, and about $800 costs, and a whole lot of luck. Managed to pull this off. One of the biggest trachy I’ve seen around here, just sheer mass. Had an electrical line directly underneath so it was hand dug, hand loaded and hand planted (planted alone!) Hell of a tree 20+ ft of trunk, and kicked my ass for two days. But it’s in. Oh and it’s a female, so could mother hybrids someday.
