This morning my heart dropped after i saw 3 fronds damaged by windy ( 25- 28 mph wind gusts) conditions. Aren't palms supposed to handle a lot more wind speeds before they show signs of wind damages ?

Hi everyone just signed up a few minutes ago. Thank you for having me here. Moved to San Antonio,TX from Germany a little while back and I fell in love with palm trees since they're pretty common over here. The majority are Washingtonia, Texas Sabal , Pindo ,CIDP , Mediterranean and Sago .Before our last artic winter I was able to see some Queens but I assume none of them survived unprotected in this area. However I try to give it a try so we bought a queen at HD . I've read all about winter protection from Christmas lights to regular maintenance incl. fertilization a few times a year. Does anyone of you guys have some success keeping them alive due to some nights of fr…

hi, where does one place a digital thermostat reader and also digital Heating Thermostat sensor ( instead of a thermacube), in order to gauge and control the temperatures inside a boxed up palm. Is it better to have the temperatures measured on the ground or nearer to the crown of the palm. many thanks.

This is my method: Washingtonia filifera seeds. Soaked in water with a couple of drops of lime juice to lower the ph, and one drop of peroxide to kill fungus for 6-7 days frequently changing it and then removed and ziplock bagged with a soaked piece of paper/tissue for another 4-5 days in my cabinet (no light) and two popped. Looks like little lids opening. temperature at a fairly steady 70 degrees. Germinated faster than the ones I have on my heat pad in soil.

Hello everyone, as the title says I'd like to hear your opinions/experience on growth rate of these two species. While they come from different climates and even continents, they seem to have a lot of in common - similar clumping characteristics, trunks barely emerging from the ground, quite similar overall look of the plants, frost tolerance, but what about the growth speed, is there any difference between these two slow growers?

I was wondering if the archontophoenix cunninghamiana / piccabeen / bangalow / king palm can grow in zone 9b in arcadia florida. if I wire some coconuts onto it nobody would know its not a coco. Arcadia is 9b not 10a, but it seems to be close to the line of 10a.

Transplanting large trachycarpus fortunei
by andyc209- 1 follower

Just moved a large trachycarpus fortunei with 15ft trunk from a garden with heavy clay soil to our garden which has good rich soil for 2ft then sand. When we dug up the tree the root ball was not that big (we did not cut it in any way) so i am worried about its survival. So far i have dug out and re-planted within 48 hours, attached ropes to support it in any wind, watered very well straight after planting and added some palm specific mix to the water. I have heard it may be a good idea to remove leaves to prevent shock, how many should i leave on the tree? Thought it would need the leaves for energy? Also given the roots where only exposed for 48 hours will they die bac…

How to sprout Syagrus glaucescens seed
by Jeff zone 8 N.C.- 0 replies
For those of you lucky enough to obtain some of the Syagrus glaucescens seeds recently offered here ( they are all sold now) I wanted to give you an update on how to sprout them. They were sold as very hard to sprout. I got them on Sept. 8th. I cleaned the seed off by grinding them between two bricks and then shaking them around in a jar with a wet sand slush to finish the cleaning. I decided to try several different methods to see if I could get a sprout. I ordered Gibberellic Acid as part of some of the methods I would try but while waiting for it to arrive I decided to try a method without the G. Acid. So I took 6 seeds and de-capped them. That is I used a grinder…

On inpulse I bought a very small 40cm bismarckia. I allready got a blue in the ground so This will need to go in a pot untill I move. Some questions: can I plant it in a really large pot right away? Is 1part compost 1part peatmoss 1/2 part perlite with some bonemeal an ok blend? Do they grow slow in pots? can they get fairly big without a gigantic pot?

Mule Palms in Texas

Hello, in a previous post I mentioned that I was told Lowes in Texas would be bringing in Mule palms according to a nursery manager friend from Acosta. I haven't been to Lowes this week but I went to Acosta website. I found in the picture gallery 7 gallon mules. That seems right, too bad I was hoping they might have 25 gallons, lol I have seen very large ones in Houston private nurseries, but too much too $$ to truck load 90 miles each way. When they grow so fast anyhow.

First time I've ever seen these in at Home Depot in East Tennessee. One says a Wodyetia Foxtail. The other pic I took was not labeled. I honestly have no idea. I just guessed perhaps a mule palm. They also had lots of Pygmy Date Palms.

Winter Protection

Just brainstorming a few ideas in order to save my palms this winter. This is my 1st year growing majesty palms in zone 5b and Im planning to use red infared heat lamps that turn on when the temps drop to 45. All this is inside a tee-pee wrapped with multiple layers of shrink wrap. Is there anything Im missing? Is there any reason why this couldn't/wouldn't work?
