Trachy growth this year .

My Trachy has put on a lot of new trunk this year . Last year's growth was less . You can see 2 years of growth by looking at the distance between 2 years of inflorescences which in the picture is last year's inflorescences and the year before that year's inflorescences , and that looks like about 8" . This year's growth is all the fiber above last spring's inflorescences which looks to be closing in on 2 feet of new trunk . How much growth have y'all seen on your Trachys ? Can anyone tell me what is the shortest "trunking" Sabal Palm that I can use in zone 8b/9a? I have sabal minor, serenoa repens, etc but I'm looking for a quicker trunking Sabal that stays short. Sabal Bermudana, Palmetto, Riverside, or whatever? A Sabal that will trunk but not grow to skyscraper heights. Thanks.

What are you expecting this coming winter? Do you rely on the farmer's Almanac, a favorite meteorologist, or have you completely given up on long-range forecasts? Also, when do you start getting your protective gear out for the palms? As for predictions, I always prepare for the worst but I do like to see what's in store. Looks like several sources predict Texas is in for a dry and mild winter (which may have something to do with a moderately strong La Niña effect). For the rest, I check local news every so often for the 2 week weather forecast. If I see we may hit freezing, I'm getting the frost blankets and buckets out (at least for the young palms)!

New Trachycarpus Fortunei - Utah

I have been following several posts and appreciate the knowledge I am starting to acquire. I live in Lehi, Utah which is zone 6B and recently purchase a 5 gallon Trachycarpus Fortunei (Windmill Palm) while in St. George, Utah. Our coldest temperature last winter was -3F. I would love to plant this in my yard and protect it during the winter months. Does any one have any tips on how I can increase the odds of helping this palm survive? I am planning on planting it in well amended and draining soil, and in full sun. Also, is it large enough to plant in the ground? Thanks for your time and advice! Greg

So my Blue Med has some viable seeds but I read you need a male & female plant to have viable seeds. On some occasions I know this is possible to have a clump with male & females grown together out of multiple seeds germinating or seed drops near plant growing with it but has anyone heard or seen on rare occasions a single plant (with 3 trunks) produce both male & female flowers? Only other explanation (likely scenario) is my Green Chamaerops Humilis was the pollen donor. But from 50+ feet away? I have never seen seed on my Green Med & I always suspected it a male. Got a couple of palms and some mango trees that is still small and i decide to give them some protection the first winter. My seup is as follows Stake 4 planks around the palm as a frame, then put transculcent plastic around the sides and staple it to the frame. Put in a thermalcube and a bundle of c9s christmas lights, put some on the ground and some up the frame. Then finally put a tarp on top as a roof that breathes better. i then take the tarp of in fhe morning. How much would heat would this raise inside the mini greenhouse? Lets say I get a severe dip to -5 celcius as an example how warm would it be in the inside. Size of the box is 1x1m wide and 2 meters tall…

Hey I was wondering if there was a VERY HARDY alternative to the royal palm, queen palm, coconut palm, or foxtail palm that is fast growing, self seeds like a Washingtonia, and can take temps down to 7-10f. Requirements must be pinnate/feather leaf, grows to around 30-50 feet, slim trunk, preferably easy root system, and NON CLUMPING. I prefer feather over fan but that's my opinion all plants are beautiful. One more thing must be able to take 10f with minimal damage. Don't tell me a pindo those things take forever to grow. We are technically zone 7 but we haven't gone below 10f since the artic blast of 2013-2014. Thanks.

I planted this Pindo in March, balled and burlap 3ft or so of trunk. Planted properly, big tree ring to hold water and watered 2 times a month, on the 1st and 15th. I did that watering schedule for March-July and then went to once a month in August til now. I did that water schedule because I just replaced a Pindo in the exact same spot that died due to over watering. Palm has been doing great. I recently trimmed 5 completely brown lower branches so I thought it was doing it’s thing until 2 fronds from the middle spear completely fell literally overnight. I tugged on the middle spear and it didn’t pull out. Any ideas, this is terrib…

Did a search here on this species and most if not all threads are about cold hardiness. Thinking about getting one of these but ones available that can be shipped are usually 1 gallon size so was curious if anyone here could report on the speed of growth on this species of Trachycarpus. I know GOOGLE research of culture of this palm says "fast" but more curious what members here have experienced with this palm, especially when kept potted. Seems like this is the least cold hardy of the species so won't plant mine in the ground to protect. Scott/Omaha

Does anyone have experience germinating Parajubaea Torallyi? I got some seeds online, most of them do not seem mature, only 6 of the seeds are dark brown. I worry since Parajubaea has bad reputation I may not be able to germinate any of them. I was planning to keep them in the fridge for about a month, then plant them half burried and vary the temperature between day and night. I also wonder if maybe they should be planted like a coconut with the mesocarp on. Would the seed on the right be able to germinate? It does not feel hard like the one on the left.

The reason I say "micro climate" is because DC is pretty much a micro climat itself we havent gone below 10f since the artic blast of 2013-2014. I am growing date palms and I need something more hardy and fast growing. Thanks for your help.

On another forum, I was advised by another poster that they had had a lot of success with the rapid germination of Parajubaea seeds by cracking them to expose the endosperm. Including a low mortality rate thereafter.... I tried to seek clarification as to whether you just cracked the very hard endocarp and then ‘planted' the cracked ‘nut' - or what was advisable, before or after cracking the nut. EG do you try to remove the endosperm entirely ? Do you pre-soak ? Post-soak ? Do you need to use a bleach solution before or after ? Etc etc. Unfortunately, they didn't respond - I don't think they were a regular poster, but I did have the strong impression that they …
