What palms grows fastest when having cold nights?

my days are anything from 20-27c now during my winter. most palms have stopped growing now that its like 1c every night. I still see some growth on the queens the medjool and my robilinis though. The others are in suspended animation more or less and those are: Robust, Filifera. Filibusta, Chinensis, Butia, Bismarckia, Kentia and Majesty. What palms could grow at a reasonable pace with cold nights?

Our Garden in zone 8b/9a Pacific Northwest, Bowen Island BC in summertime. Planted palms include T. fortunei, C. humilis, C. humilis var. cerifera, J. chilensis hybrid, R. hystrix, S. minor, T. wagnerianus. Bananas are Musa basjoo. Anyone else located in the PNW?

Hey I have a potted Windmill Palm, on my patio all summer. When I do bring him inside for the winter do i lessen the amount of light it would normally get?, to kind of slow down it's growth? or will it slow it's growth naturally? or put it under a grow light?.... Thanks Guys

Hi Guys, Can someone provide me the pros and cons of of the Medjool Date Palm versus the Sylvester Date Palm? I have read many conflicting arguments and I hope I can find some honest feedback here. I understand they are both susceptible to disease such as Lethal Bronzing so I will already throw that out there. Thanks, Nick

Thick trunk (Jubaea x Butia)

Most of the Jubaea x Butia F1 are thick-trunked (if this base has fully expanded). Not to west.coast, pure Jubaea proportions of course. Early indications in loosened leaf bases make me think this cross will eventually present a clean truck. A few more vertical feet would probably make for an optimal ‘specimen palm’. What do you think? I’ll need a professional partner with the right equipment/experience to handle such heavy palms. Standard 5 ft. shovel leaned against trunk. This palm has more recurving fronds than some of the others.

Stripped down Windmill

Here are two Windmill palms for comparison purposes that are showing a non fibrous trunk. One has intentionally had the older petiole bases removed, the other has decayed and have fallen, picked by nesting birds and only cleared to clean up the untidiness. The ones purposely removed show coloring of blues and yellow even after a year or two of being removed. Naturally fallen ones have a more plain look. I've seen it stated that removing the petioles and fiber in the colder range of these palms is not recommended. I've seen some local palms that are stripped heavily showing a smooth look and overall different appearance to this palm. Observations and comments welcome.…

Sabal ID

I recently acquired this large Sabal from my palm guy and am looking to see if anyone is able to help me identify it. Sabals are pretty rare in the PNW and when i heard he had one at another location I was able to coerce him to sell it to me. He wasn't sure what type of Sabal it is. He thought a regular S. Minor but another person told him it could be S.Louisiana. As you can see from the photos it's quite large at about 8' wide and 6' high and probably about 4' in depth. The only other one I've seen in the Portland area is in my own garden and not big at all. Sabal's seem to throw only about 2 leaves per year in our climate. Any help is appreciated.

I went to one meeting at Ingas place. Her king/ Cunninghamia that survived the 89 freeze was spectacular. I have 1 of the children from this tree growing in my yard. I'm anxiously awaiting seeds. I have about 5' of clear trunk currently. It grew fast once it trunked. Is anyone else growing these? Ill post an image tomorrow. Its too dark now. It's been a good grower in its protected spot in my central valley (kinda) yard. Im glad that some sort of legacy of hers lives on. I look forward to having seed set from this tree.

I have always wondered to what extent preventing water from entering the crown could spell major problems for a palm. Its obviously not good but if it is really is a significant factor (in combination with cold), could you build a lightweight mini umbrella (from plastic cones, for example) that could, supported by the spear, divert (at least most) water? Like a small wizard's hat... It would cover the most crucial area. Since its lightweight, you could even attach (and easily remove) it to large palms using a pole. Magical thinking?

Is anyone currently growing Trachycarpus oreophilus? Any info on how they do? I'm assuming its a pretty easy care palm. I looked at the freeze damage section and not a lot in there. It may be the nicest looking Trachy out there and I would like to try one, and I have access to one but I think it will come with a hefty pricetag.

My palms have become too large or too thorny to wrap the spear leaf before a bad weather event. I'm going to use a hairdryer where the spear emerges after the precipitation stops but would pouring something in the spear be beneficial? Hydrogen peroxide? Daconil? Other?

We have not really started anymajor planning with our spring project, but i had gone to different sites looking at different palm options. While zone doesnt matter, i have a list of palms that may or may not work here. All those postings about the VA Beach Palmettos made me wonder. By my reckoning, I would say marginal from the southern tip of the Delmarva south and west to Raleigh to Charlotte to Atlanta to Birmingham then to the Mississippi Delta to around Texarkana. Perhaps even a little north of this in favorable microclimate such as urban Little Rock and Memphis. In other words, corresponding with the northern limits of CHZ 8 or wherever Sabal minor would occur naturally. LA and FL would be the only states where it can be grown anywhere but MS and SC would come close. Does this sound about right?

Can anyone offer insight into an appropriate trachycarpus species? I have a spot in my yard that would be nice for one. Soil is on the heavy side in that part of the yard, but is good. Marginally acidic. Sun is direct until 10AM in the summer, then filtered and shaded the rest of the day. Wind is almost nonexistent, and especially down there, which is sheltered by large, mature mesquite trees. Its the coldest part of the yard. Morning lows will hit 25F with regularity there, and we’ll see 17F once a decade or so, albeit brief until the sun crests. Daytime winter highs are 70+ typically. need some urgent help with cold protection

Hey, this winter is colder than usually the forecast is 30f for 2 nights 28f for one and 25-27f on the coldest. They will probably last around 2-4 hours before the sun heats things up. The palms i will Protecting is a small Bismarck and a Majesty palm. I have no acess to non led c9 christmas lights. My plan was to use a small frame i made put it over the majesty making "walls" using booblewrap stappeling it to the wood frame and making sure the fronds will not touch the bobblewrap "walls". For the Bismarck I am think just putting over a huge plastic trashcan. Should this be sufficient or will i need supplemental heat? If i need to get a heat source fast i might be able to…

Hello All, I am new to the forum and would like some recommendations for palms on Seabrook Island, SC? We are right along the ocean approximately 30 miles southeast of downtown Charleston. We are bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Kiawah river to the west. The island is covered with Sabal palms naturally under a live oak, pine, and magnolia canopy. I would like to believe we are a solid 9a. I see Pindo's, Mediterranean Fans, Washingtonia's, and Windmills around with the occasional Sylvester Date and CIDP. What other species would you recommend? Usually by this time of year about at least half the fruit would've fallen off the tree by now . Due to the long frost free fall they are just beginning to fall off . They looked great during the holiday period . Sorry , I meant to put this under tropical looking plants ( Thee is a Needle palm in the bottom of the picture ) .
