Protection question - heating cables
by KellerAg- 0 replies
Hello everyone, I’ve read this forum for a long time but never posted. I’m in Keller, TX (8a I believe) and I wanted to ask if anyone had experience with the pipe heating cables available at Home Depot? I wrapped all of my palms/cycads in burlap and then used the pipe heating cables, followed by landscape fabric and then a 9 mil tarp. The species are Mediterranean fans, butia capitata, cycas revoluta, cycas taitungensis, cycas panzhihuaensis and a hybrid tait x panzi. With the exception of yesterday afternoon for about 3-4 hours, the temp has been below freezing since Thursday which is when I did all of this prep. The heating cables hav…

Spotted these large Butias at an office park in Huntersville, NC, just north of Charlotte. They apparently were transplanted/established before the harsh winter of 2017-18 in which the temperatures remained below 32F for several days. They are fruiting and seedlings are coming up in the nearby shrubbery.

Queen palm fronds drooping
by Tony Taylor- 0 replies

First timer here. I have a mature queen palm that over the last couple of years the new fronds come out, look good for a few weeks, and then droop all the way down. I live in south Louisiana and a number of years ago we had a pretty significant freeze, although I don't remember it dipping below 25 degrees. Seems the problem has been since the freeze although this may be coincidental? Any suggestions? Thanks!

I figured I would start a new topic giving an update on some of my palms and other things growing in a Virginia garden. Now that I've had a little more free time, I've been catching up on quite a bit of weeding and such. It's still a work in progress. Hopefully, I can get the photos to load. Ever since getting a different phone I've had some difficulties uploading photos, so trying the computer.

Winter is Here
by GregVirginia7- 0 replies

Freezing nighttime temps are arriving over the next 14-consecutive days...predictions have 14-nights below freezing (Fahrenheit) but only two daytime temps below freezing. For the cold hardy, this seems like a reasonable scenario as day temps will allow for recovery from the night’s freezes. In that period, there will be two consecutive days/nights below freezing...one at 25/12 and the next at 30/19. My palms have had worse long-term freezes than this...but I’ll wrap the Trachy’s trunk for the two consecutive days below freezing. The Sabal Brazoria and the Chamaerops Humilis are protected as usual all winter but will let the Sabal Minor straplings tough it out with just f…

Hello, My passion is to create a palm tree landscape but unfortunately I have to strikes. Im in zone 9a, which used to be zone 8B, and Im low on the water table. Drainage can be iffy in certain spots of my yard because its higher in silt, but it can be sandier in other areas. The biggest issue is that Im low on the water table. So what I did was dug a 18" hole and waited for the water to fill the hole. Then I kept adding sand back until it was no longer wet. I was left with about a foot depth before the hole held water. So my questions are: 1. Is this still considered wet feet being that I should have 1 foot of soil for the roots to not sit in water? …

Cold Hardiness of Date Palms
by ngservet- 1 reply

What is more cold hardy Medjool date palms or Sylvester date palms? I see the Sylvester's in the Charleston SC are but not any Medjool Date palms. When I used to live in Houston I noticed after the winter the Medjool's always looked better than the Sylvester's and seemed to handle the cold better. Is there something I am missing? When you drive along 278 in SC heading to Hilton Head Island there are some really nice Medjool Date Palms to the entrance of one the housing developments near I-95. They have been there for more than 10 years so they must of faired fine during there 2010 winter!

I was recently in Madrid and got to spend about an hour in the botanical garden there. They have a nice collection of palms in USDA zone 9a. I didn't take many pictures but thought I would share a few. I was especially impressed by the Trachycarpus martianus, Butia sp. gigantea and Parajubaea torallyi.
