I sprouted some Trachies 3 months ago or so. They have 2 strap leaves each. I decided to plant 1 from its container straight into the soil. Now it actually seems to grow faster than the ones in the pots. Is there something to this or is it random? I Losened the soil up in a big area for the roots to dig easily. The change in soil from the containers to the ground is that i use regular premixed soil from HD and the garden is more clayish. Finally is there any downfall doing this with trachies?

Chamaedorea Microspadix

I have 3 Chamaedorea Microspadix clumps that have been in the ground going on 2 years now. When I got them they were all roughly 2' tall, now they are right around 6'. As they are maturing i thought I'd show pictures of the 3 as they all look slightly different from one another. The main differences I'm seeing are leaf size/shape, branch diameter, branch length before start of leaves, and trunk (shaft) diameter. This is probably all common but thought I'd share regardless. Sorry for not using proper terminology for the parts of the plant, someone feel free to correct me Clump 1

'Uruguay' Queen palm
by Tom GA- 18 replies

Around the year 2000 I contaced an IPS member in Uruguay and she graciously agreed to send me some seeds of their robust, small-fruited, cold-hardy Queen palm. I grew some up and when I moved to coastal Georgia in 2004, I planted one. It grew like gangbusters for about five years but then slowed down considerably once it reached maturity. It has been through low 20s three times and never been damaged. There are a number of other Queen palms planted near where I live and right now they all seem to exhibit at least some cold damage, but my Uruguay Queen palm looks great. Here it is in February 2014.

Date Palms in Ocean City MD

I just wanted to put this conversation up on the web to see if anyone can shed light on something that appears, simply put, impossible. I recently saw three date palms (canary or other species?) found growing by the Holiday Inn in Ocean City MD. I have pictures of them though for some reason I can’t upload them. Though I am regularly in nearby Delaware, I can only speculate that these trees are left entirely unprotected during the winter given their size. I seem to vaguely recall having seen them as newly planted trunkless individuals probably at least seven years ago, though I can’t remember for sure. Remarkably, two individuals had volunteers scattered around the base o…

New Queen Palm

Well some of you may have seen in another thread that I am the proud new owner of a small queen palm. So I'm second guessing my planting location (par for the course) and wanted to get some additional opinions on whether or not I'm setting it up for failure. The first two pics were taken this morning at 10:30 and show how shaded the area still is. It gets good sun all afternoon but my fear is without morning sun it may struggle. The good thing with this location is that it's nestled in a little cove between some larger palms, retaining wall and the neighbors fence. The last three pics show the potential new location. It would be up against the house and next to the…

Jubaea X Butia F3 growth in SE NC 1 2

I purchased this Jubaea x Buita from Garry's Nursery in New Bern NC, in May of 2015. I mostly bare rooted it before planting, due to the extreme difference in soil texture in the nice porous potting media and my heavy clay. I've had to learn the hard way about amending clay soil, or creating mini-bogs out of large root balls and potting media. From what I can gather this is at least an F3 from seeds from the late Dr. Wilcox's palm. Since my family and friends think I'm crazy if I excitedly talk about my F3 hybrid Jubutia finally pushing a new spear, I'll stick to posting photo updates to it's progress here where there might be more interest. This plant barel…

Where Are Sabal Palmetto Grown North of NC?

Where are Sabal palmetto grown north of NC? I mean in nersurys or in fields etc. There is this place in Virginia Beach called Palm Tree Mart but when viewing there site, this caught my attention, "field grown or contract grown throughout Northern Florida." Oh boy... If Sabal palmetto were field grown in Virginia Beach, or by seed colected from palms there I bet they would be a lot more hardy than the ones there now. Anyway, does anyone know of any?

Palms to try in zone 7a/7b?
by NCFM- 15 replies

I live right on the 7a/7b line in the western piedmont of NC and I'm looking for some new palms to try. Currently, I have three Sabal Minor var. Louisianas and three potted majesty palms. The majesty palms have grown to be quite large and I'm worried I won't be able to fit them inside next winter. I'd like to replace them with some palms (other than Sabal Minor) that are hardy to my zone and can be planted directly into the ground. I'm relatively new to palm cultivation so any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

My Very First Mazari
by GoatLockerGuns- 10 replies

My first Nannorrhops ritchiana seed has sprouted! This may be no big deal to some of you seasoned germinators, but I am supper stoked over this! I have been trying to germinate Nannorrhops ritchiana using the baggie method and heat pad indoors for months with no joy. I finally placed the baggie outside in this 100F degree South Texas weather and B.O.O.M; had a root showing in two weeks. I still have 4 more that have not germinated yet; I am still holding out for future success. I think it is about time to transplant this bad boy from the baggie into a pot. Anyone have any suggestions to give this Mazari its best chance? Any feedback or advice would be gr…

Are Trachies a lot faster in slightly warmer climates?
by Palmfarmer- 2 followers

I hear people say they are slow, but many of the growers are in places with little sunshine and cold in the winter. I know Trachies do bad in places with hot year around climates like southern FL. My question is basicly if they would grow a lot faster here where we do have sort of a winter but very short and cold only at night, than in areas further north with more cold and less sunshine. How long can i except to wait for my 2 frond seedlings to go palmate approximently? I am also wondering what type of strain the Trachy in the photo might be. Its advertised as "360 fronds silver" but further down the sales page it says Trachycarpus Fortunei, are these Nova?

Chinese fan palm (Livistona) as dieback perennial
by newtopalmsMD- 1 follower

In the spring of 2019 I split in half a blue pot special that had four Chinese Fan Palms (Livistona Chinensis) and planted both halves. I left them in the ground with no protection last winter, which, here in Olney MD, was pretty mild (nothing below 5F). In the spring all of the fronds were brown and there was damage to the exposed spears that had started before winter. Below are pictures as of August 10th. Both have grown multiple new fronds. I kind of treat them like late growing hastas. This winter I buried them in oak leaves to see if I can preserve some of the foliage. Will report back in the spring.

I was wanting to buy some rather large specimen cold-hardy palm trees this spring (needle palm & sabal minor), but so far my google searches are not netting me much returns. Are there any nurseries in Alabama, Georgia, or the Carolinas that have large specimen palms? I don't really want to travel much farther south than Birmingham / Atlanta / Greenville. Thanks!

Really gaining a great respect for these palms. No, you can't hang a hammock from them and they are not fast growing or have the star power of your favorite dypsis species; but they are very cold hardy and tough. How big do they get? Show us your largest one.

Chinese Fan Palm growth rate

Hi everyone, I tried to search for this topic with no luck. I just bought three 3 gallon Chinese Fan Palms. I am in Ocala, FL zone 9a. I know that they have a slow growth rate, but just how slow? I plan on planting them in full sun with drip irrigation and proper fertilization. If anyone can provide photos of them at 1 year, 3 years, 5 years that would be really helpful to me. Thanks!

Predicting frost

Hi all. We have had one of the warmest winters on record but the cold is here this week in Cyprus with temperatures around 12C in the day an around 6C at night. However according to all the weather forecasts, tomorrow it will fall to 2 C only for a couple of nights then its going up again. I have tried repeatedly from forecasts to work out if the combination of information can predict frost as this info is not available but to no avail.Dew point is listed as -2C. Is that of any use. Can someone explain the info required and how to predict. Meanwhile, my small palms, will share my old quilts and blankets for those nights.

What palms grows fastest when having cold nights?
by Palmfarmer- 6 replies
my days are anything from 20-27c now during my winter. most palms have stopped growing now that its like 1c every night. I still see some growth on the queens the medjool and my robilinis though. The others are in suspended animation more or less and those are: Robust, Filifera. Filibusta, Chinensis, Butia, Bismarckia, Kentia and Majesty. What palms could grow at a reasonable pace with cold nights?
