Identifying pods or flowers emerging from trunk
by Brandon James- 1 follower

Hey everyone, I have found some new pods emerging from the trunk near the crown, curious if I should let them grow if the are seeds or not bother and if they are flowers let them be? I wasn’t sure what one was and picked at it, and it was a cream colored pod, so I left it alone and today discovered a second one that’s much bigger under another frond. It appears to have some cold damage at the beginning of the tip. I also thought I found some mold on the other side so I treated with a light amount of neem oil mixed with a gallon of water and poured over the tree.

HC Palmetto after 5-6 months of growth :

I planted this HC Palmetto on June 2 , 2020 so it probably grew about 5-6 months before cooler weather slowed it down . It was already rooting out well and had lots of frond growth when I bought it . Just got it home : It was incredibly heavy with all that rootball . I think it had been at the nursery for at least a couple of years because of all that root growth and it even flowered last summer . It was said to be from northern Florida stock , so hopefully it's a little hardier than those from more southern ecotypes . I bought it in Wilmington , NC . Here it is today , and this will be its start of the 2021 season picture for my fu…

Hey Gang :), I have Windmill Palm seeds that have sprouted, and are doing good. Half of them haven't , and 5 of them have already starting to rot. Despite my efforts I think it might be time to throw the seeds out in the compost :(, The photos are the seeds that haven't even begun to germinate and the other one obviously have :P, They ones that haven't germinated still are hard as rocks and sink like stones when put in water...are they dead or what? I started them around mid January.. Thanks a lot

Why aren’t there more of these being utilized here in the US? Can these handle the southeast’s humidity? I know many people aren’t advised to plant filifera- another palm that doesn’t like humidity- in the southeast, but I’ve heard of quite a few people that grow filifera- as opposed to the less hardy robusta- in 8b/8a South Carolina, middle 8a Georgia, the pan handle of Florida and in Texas. With the hardiness, I would assume there would be more of these.

So I have some sabal seeds germinating and a few of the windmill palm seeds have germinated also I just noticed. I don’t have a greenhouse or plant lights. What should I do with them at this stage? should I plant them up into small pots and put them outside to grow? lows are in the 50’s and 60’s for the remainder of the forcast( next two nights will be in 40’s) thanks for any input. This is my first time ever growing anything from seed.

Should I move my palm tree to another spot?

I didn't really plan ahead and planted a windmill palm under a power line a few years ago. It is about a foot or 2 to the left of it. The top power line is about 15 ft high maybe and the line under it about 12 ft high. According the web it says it normally grows to only about 8-10ft in the cooler growing zones 6 and 7. I am in Tennessee, and some sites list my area as zone 6b, other sites say I am in zone 7a. Most of our winters are above zero. But it's absolute max height is like 30 or 40ft if it is in really ideal conditions. It says it commonly reaches 10-20ft in landscape uses, however. It is in I would say partial or full shade. I know it's probably really unlik…

Where can I find a container sabal palmetto?

Hi I live near fort mill and I’ve been looking for sabal palmettos to buy, but I’m at a problem- I can only buy seeds ( I would just pick them off trees if I was that desperate) seedlings or mature ones. I was wondering if anyone knows a place to buy container palmettos ( 1-5 gallons) for a good price. Thanks.

Windmill protection removal
by EastCanadaTropicals- 2 replies

Winter protection worked perfectly for this winter, thanks to it being a milder than usual winter and all the insulation from the snow. Now that there is no freezing temps in the nighttime forecast anymore, the grass will hopefully start getting more green.

Buying rare palms

Hello. Where does one purchase rare palms? Such as the hybrid varieties and different sabals and such. I almost purchased a sabal uresana on eBay but the order was refunded. It was coming from Texas so I’m assuming it was damaged or just out of stock. I’m not really interested in growing from seed but would like to purchase a small seedling at least.

7B-8A Chammy cerifera
by WSimpson- 9 replies

I say 7B-8A zone because even though my 30 year average lowest winter lows average a little above 12F , I still get enough 7B winters to where I feel like 7B-8A is more indicative of my area than saying 8A . Officially I'm 7B . This has been in the ground for 7 years and I'm pretty pleased with it . It's to the right of the Agave ( I think that Agave is going to flower one of these years soon ) . Cerifera all by itself .

Zone 3b
by Philly J- 18 replies

ok so not this summer, but next summer I am going to be preparing both a bulgarian Trachy and R.Hystrix. Extensively researching, I found a testimony from someone in North Dakota (zone 4 with sometimes 3b weather) who successfully winters his R.Hystrix, albeit with many many steps and layers of protection for both the trunk and the surrounding ground (which freezes here in Saskatchewan very very deep). His palm is now 6 years old and had some good warmer winters to harden itself, which was lucky for him. We rarely see that winter on the warmer side up here in 3b. This may be completely futile, but I wanted the challenge, which is why i will only be doing one of ea…

Another Nice VA Beach Sabal Palmetto 1 2
by PalmTreeDude- 1 follower

I had a thread with a bunch of things about VA Beach Sabal palmettos, with pictures and streetview links, but just could not find it. Anyway, here is a nice Sabal palmetto in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Notice how it is inland. Also, apparently there is a street called "Palmetto Avenue" in Virginia Beach just down the street from this nice palmetto. The palmetto is the pin on the map, the other pin shows Palmetto Avenue. I did not expect palmetto to be in the name of anything north of North Carolina, so that's neat.

Sabal Palmetto 8a?
by Dartolution- 3 followers

So I've been fooling around with the idea this year about ordering some 7-10ft tall (clear trunk) palmetto palms from Florida, and having them planted in my yard. There are several palmettos around the Birmingham, Alabama area here and there. I am 30 miles south of Birmingham and across the highway there is a house with 3 of them in their front yard I believe. Good tall, established ones at that. There is also a nice established one on HWY280 in Superior Grills parking lot. At least, I remember 1. Anyway. I was wondering what the general consensus would be about having a palmetto in 8a Alabama? Tips? Tricks? Sources?

I took this picture back in February at a BBQ restaurant. This palm has been there for around a decade and it's definitely an impressive specimen. Unfortunately this is the only one that I know of in West Tennessee.

Hi, I just installed two hurricane cut Sabal palmettos in my yard two weeks ago. We are supposed to get down to 29 tonight. Should I protect them since they're not established? This is a record low and an unexpected late frost for my zone 8a area. Thanks!

Where to buy Sabal Minor and Rhapidophyllum Hystrix?
by LasPalmerasDeMaryland- 18 replies

Hey y’all! I’ve recently grown a love for Sabal Minor and it’s becoming my favorite cold hardy palm. I’ve seen reports of it in Maryland on Dave’s Garden, and it seems to be bulletproof in my climate (no damage in a normal winter and only takes minor damage in extreme temperatures). The gardener lives in Centreville, MD and reports that Sabal Minors (and R. Hystrix) not only survive, but thrive in his area. This is very promising for me since his area is pretty much a similar latitude to mine and he is in a zone 7a while I’m 7b. He also reports Sabal Louisiana as having very similar hardiness (so mines have a chance!). But I would also like to buy some normal Minors…

Wichita palms, 6 weeks after arctic event...signs of life!
by jfrye01@live.com- 13 replies

So it has been nearly six weeks since the record cold event here in the central US...and I'm pleased to say I'm seeing signs of recovery in most of the palms at the Church of the Nazarene in downtown Wichita. Keep in mind, the groundskeeper here was out of town through the duration of the event, so none of these ended up getting any special care...they were quite literally exposed to the elements. It is likely, however, that the snowfall we experienced in the days preceding the event may have definitely helped insulate. Wichita Eisenhower Airport sits out southwest of downtown several miles, and that is where the official low temperature for the city was measured. The…
