I planted a new sabal minor "mc curtain" in my Cincinnati zone 6b yard. I received this from and acquaintance in Wichita, Ks whos aid that this plant survived their brutal winter freeze in an un heated greenhouse in a pot! Hopefully it will be happy in my yard. Sabal minor " Mc Curtain" doesn't seem to have issues here.

Any guesses as to what will survive in Texas. Here is my prediction. Virtually all palms north of Waco - DEAD. Maybe someone eeks out a Sabal or Windmill in Dallas Austin - All W. Robusta and Date palms - Dead. W. Filifera, Sabal Palmetto, and Sabal Mexicana live for the most part. Still some deaths there. San Antonio. 50 percent of W. Robusta - Dead. Some surprise and live. All queen palms dead. Some date palms dead. Probably most dates survive. Every W. Filifera, Sabal, etc live on. The infamous riverwalk mules live after enduring damage. Houston. Queen palms dead. A lot of Robusta dead maybe 25 or 30 percent Every zone push zone 9 and 10 …

Hi All, New to the forum, and live in the Houston area, Sugar Land to be exact for my Houstonites. I recognize that Moon Valley Nursery has been well documented for being overpriced, but went there this weekend and was quoted 3k (each) for King Mule Palm at 4ft each, which are cold hardy (sp i am told). I lost two queen piru palms during the freeze and hoping to replace them with something a little more hardy. My gardener is able to find King Mule Palms at 2,500 dollars each installed. Does anyone know anywhere else in the Houston area i could fint 4-6ft King Mule Palms that are cheaper? I ask because i came across the following link showin…

Historic Weather Data

Does anyone know of a good website to look up historic weather data? I'm trying to find historic mininum temps for my area. I know weather underground has historic data but I know some of the numbers are wrong as it doesn't show the winter storm we had earlier this year and it says we got into single digits last year. Which I know we did not. Thanks.

Fruiting Date Palms in Northern California zone 8-9?

Hello, my name is Kyle. My horticultural journey has lead me from bonsai, cacti, and now palms! But what I love more than looking at palms is eating their fruit! So my first major palm purchase will be a fruiting variety, Phoenix Dactylsomethin, but I am concerned about their fruiting ability in Northern CA. Upon searching, I have read various times that you won't get fruit out of a palm in N CA. (Oh yeah? >:]) I'm hoping many of you will laugh at a Californian with his first world problem and tell me, of course it will fruit. I'm in Auburn CA. Edge of zone 8-9. Closer to 8. 1700'. I found a nice little gem of info Fao.org that seems like it's the date palm …

New R. Hystrix!

I decided to try a needle palm here in zone 7b Mid-Atlantic. I figure that after 3 years of protection they should be near bulletproof here as they are rated as zone 6b and the summers here can be sweltering. I tried them here before but the first one died during the fall due to transplant shock (as it was shipped bare-root from the west coast) and the second one was a Home Depot blue pot from florida. I don’t think the blue pot one was a very strong plant as the leaves were quite brittle and snapped frequently. I’ve heard blue pots in general aren't very strong due to over-fertilization since they’re so slow growing. Anyway, this palm was shipped with a pot! So…

Help Me Make My Windmills Awesome :-)

Good day fellow palm lovers! First, I would like to introduce myself as this is my first post. My name is Mike and I am just an average guy who loves tropical areas, so now that my family and I are settled in central Georgia, having palm trees put in was a must. Aside from genuinely wanting to know how to make our two Windmill palms (trachecarpus fortunei?) look awesome, my hobbies include Going to warm beach locations with my wife, cars and amateur astronomy/astrophotography. I know very little about palm trees, and hope to glean some knowledge! We had our two windmills put in last year around April/May (Zone 8). They are each about 8ft or so talI at the top…

Sabal Minor in Utah
by Gator- 0 replies
I ordered a Sabal Minor from Northeast Ohio Palms ( cant find Sabals out west ? ) It should arrive here next week. I am going to plant it on the south side of my house and I am not planning on giving it any winter protection other than a frost covering in the event of a major arctic outbreak. I have canna lillies that have been in this spot for several years now and they overwinter just fine. I think there is a small zone 8 microclimate next to the house. I will post pictures as soon as I have it planted. I welcome any and all feedback -Gator Central Utah Zone 6

Sabal x Brazoria?

I purchased this a few years ago as a Brazoria from a nursery that had many kinds of Sabal (ecotypes of palmetto & minor, green uresana, and brazoria) all mostly strap leaf in 3 gallon, not labeled but separated into groups. I was directed to the Brazoria, picked one up and was on my way. Now a few years later and my plant has palmate leaves, I'm thinking maybe I grabbed one of the minors that got accidentally placed with the Brazoria? I think they maybe had Louisiana and some eastern nc giant type? I don't remember exactly but here is my palm. It usually holds 6ish leaves (most were shredded or crushed in hurricane last year), they are not ver…

Palm/tree fern freeze survival in Fukuoka, Japan

Hello to those I’ve not said hello to yet! I’m Scott, American permanent resident of Japan. I bought our house in 9b Fukuoka (hot and humid but fairly short summers, chilly but relatively mild winters with occasional light snow), in western Japan 9 years ago, and with it inherited a small garden with a large koi pond and a steep slope behind it. Gradually over the years I’ve changed the look of the garden to one with a more lush look, first with tree ferns, then with palms and other tropicals. The first pic shows the original state of the garden, with the pond making most of the space unusable. Once the pond was filled in and pavers laid, the space was a lot m…

On eBay today I noticed that a seller is selling Sabal minor, Sabal Birmingham and Sabal Louisiana all bare root. They are 1 gallon sized for $28. I’ve bought 4 bare root Sabal palmetto from eBay and one of those has thrived while the other 3 are acclimating with a struggle. Are all Sabal varieties sensitive to bare root?

I grabbed an 11 gal Mule from Lowes for $159 about a month ago. I had a conversation with someone on here that it looked very close in size to the $89 6.5 gal Mule, so I didn't plant it for awhile in case I came across a 6.5 gal one and could compare sizes. I finally got tired of waiting today so I planted it and as soon as I tipped the pot the perfectly intact 6.5 gal root ball popped out along with the extra dirt that filled up the difference. I stuck it in the ground anyway but I'm going to see if I can bitch and moan my $70 back. So, if anyone has one of the 6.5 gal plant would you be able to do me a solid and take a pic with a tape measurer showing the height so …

Have a quick question on a newly planted Waggie Palm. Three weeks ago planted a field grown, 7' , b&b Waggie. It had some minor scale that I have treated with oil and a systemic and looks to be recovering nicely. It was watered daily for the first week and now I'm watering 2x per week. The bottom row of fronds is looking a bit yellow, but I was warned that this might be shock from digging, transporting and planting. My question is should I start fertilizing now or wait? On my Windmill and Pindo I use Jobes Organics. Is this a good product? Many thanks for your help.

Saving a 2021 Freeze Survivor Washingtonia From Power Lines.

Howdy again! A tall Washingtonia has survived in my yard from 4*F that is a Washingtonia other than a pure Filifera. So here is the deal. When I bought my property the next property was zoned Residential. Well sometime just before I bought my property it was rezoned commercial! So for about 17 years I did not have utilities on my property. Then just 3 or 4 years ago a hotel was built and they ran above ground utilities right along my property line. Unfortunately for me, I had a row of palms directly under them, at the time they cut down two Washingtonia. Fast forward to today. Out of roughly 2 dozen tall Washingtonia throughout my property who would have g…

Trachy Pushing Flower Spikes

Trachy pushing around 12-flower spikes this spring...I have no other Trachy’s of flower age yet so this is the only one in the immediate area...does the process of flowering sap energy from the palm that would otherwise be used to push fronds and height? Also, in the off-chance my Trachy is both sexes, should I just let the flower spikes form and see what happens? Last year was the first time it flowered but I hacked them off thinking they were a waste of time and energy for the poor, lonely Trachy, but wondering now what the chances are of it flowering with both parents in mind...most of the spike’s pods are beginning to burst out in flower while several others are just …
