How much of a difference does it make if you peel all the fibre or coating off the trachycarpus seeds vs just putting them in dirt as they come off the tree, I got 2000 seeds I want to try with

Sabal minor watering during heat

Hi All! I hope I don’t get annoying with all of my newbie questions. We have unseasonably hot weather the next 7 days. Upper 80s and lower 90s and no rain. When people say give the minors a lot of water, does that mean every morning? Every other morning? Or what? I really appreciate it! Nate

First time poster here. I live in zone 6B and planted some Windmill Palms (south facing). I am thinking of burying some soil warming cables and have them set to automatically turn on at 32F and off at 50-60F. Have any of you had success with this method?

I have a bizmark palm that spear pulled on me 2 weeks ago. I poured peroxide in the crown and it’s pushing up a new spear. When is it ok to water this palm? I thought I read somewhere to not water a palm when it’s in recovery mode from rot and spear pull.

I've posted a few other threads about my struggles with T. fortunei and got a lot of great advice. Recently purchased a new 15g plant, and raised up my planting area to improve drainage in my heavy clay yard, based on advice here. Palm was dropped into the ground at the beginning of May, given a good soak, and then has been watered about once every 5 days or so since then (last time I tried one of these I think I over did the watering). It's otherwise been a very dry and mild May here in central Virginia. No fertilizer used yet, was planning to wait a month or so. Fast forward to today, a little less than three weeks from planting, and the tree already looks pre…

Will Arenga engleri stay small in a confined space?

I’m thinking of planting them on either side of my front door. A bit of bushiness is fine but I’m wondering if they will tend to stay more compact in a small space, as something this big would be a bit much. I suppose I could just remove any annoying trunks as they emerged?

Hello, We were able to keep this palm “Ol’ Roy” alive over the winter here in Austin, Texas. I am trying to identify him. My best guess is a 8a cold hardy Washingtonia Filabusta type filifera. https://photos.app.goo.gl/K9XJyhPGo3cY2N6x5

Sorry for the tease... But someone in the US must have one that has flowered by now? I have 2 of a reasonable size with the largest one having over 7ft of trunk but yet to flower, I was convinced it would this spring but alas.... nada. It would seem they need to get to over 7ft trunk similar to takil before they flower? But I’d like to be proved wrong. IMG_4313.MOV

Ground or greenhouse
by BeyondTheGarden- 11 replies

Hello all, I acquired some palms from Raintree tropicals in NW Oregon yesterday. Some like Trachy's will definitely go in the ground. Some I am debating if I'd be better off putting them into my greenhouse for a year or two. Sabal Uresana, Sabal Louisiana, Jubaea, and R hystrix are the main questions. I know they all grow slowly, trying to weigh the juice vs squeeze. Would there be a significant amount of growth from a year or two in the greenhouse vs putting them in the ground? Our summers are so mild here, highs in the mid 70s are the norm. Compared to the greenhouse which is 90F while the sun is up, and also more humid since we don't get rain all summ…

Sabal palmetto PNW growth

Just wanted to share some springtime growth on my S. palmetto planted on Vancouver Island. Two days ago, I marked across the active spear to and older leaf with a sharpie to track its growth. Much to my surprise, it moved quite a bit in just two days. While the weather has been nice here (daytime highs 18-22C, lows 10-12C), its by no means been Florida hot. I’m looking forward to see what kind of growth I’ll get once the real summer weather arrives here! Luckily, I’m still young so I might actually see a trunk on this before I die! I know it’s probably not exciting for some of you folks in the SE, but for me and my comparably heat-starved climate I’m going to chalk …

New Serenoa repens - REHAB!
by Dartolution- 4 replies
So while at a local nursery today I managed to scrounge up a tini-tiny serenoa that was smashed amongst a large section of sagos. After pulling it out, I realized it was in pretty bad shape. Okay, really bad shape... It had/has white scale, had a dead center spear in each offshoot, lots of dead fronds on it, and appeared to have some slight basal rot. Against my better judgement I talked to an associate and got it knocked down to $25 (which isn't a steal I know) and decided to attempt to rehab it because I have wanted one for a while, and figured what the heck. I love the southeast's native palms, and have for many years. Serenoa repens is no except…

Cold Hardy Palm Companions
by GregVirginia7- 2 replies

OK...I know this is a cold hardy palm forum but cold hardy agaves seem to really compliment cold hardy palms so I’m giving one a try...an Agave parryi var. truncata. It arrived bare root, though it was advertised as a 10” potted plant...the roots were a bit frayed so I cut off the sloppy ends and sprayed the whole root base with a copper fungicide, positioned it in the “prepared“ whole (the anticipation was a little weird on my part, I admit it) mixed the gravelly soil, poked it around the roots with a chopstick and gave it a good dose of water. Some thicker roots actually looked a bit desiccated. Hope I situated it good enough for sun exposure...it’s a little mixed but g…

Palmettos are the toughest palms
by Haddock- 1 follower

Funny story with palmettos I had a couple of weeks ago. There was this palmetto tree near me that had some seedlings beside it. I dediced to go dig them out and plant them. This being my first time digging out seedlings and the fact they were growing in the almost pure clay soil of the piedmont the roots got damaged. They lost a good portion of the root system ( it’s ok I got a bunch only 2 got damaged) and I wasn’t super confident they’d survive. So I put them in a palm cactus potting soil mix ( much better then the clay they were growing in) and left them in side. I cut off a good potion on the fronds on them to increase survival rates and for humidity I would leave the…

Another new Cincinnati Sabal Minor "Mc Curtain"
by donofriojim1- 5 replies

I planted a new sabal minor "mc curtain" in my Cincinnati zone 6b yard. I received this from and acquaintance in Wichita, Ks whos aid that this plant survived their brutal winter freeze in an un heated greenhouse in a pot! Hopefully it will be happy in my yard. Sabal minor " Mc Curtain" doesn't seem to have issues here.

What will survive 1 2 3

Any guesses as to what will survive in Texas. Here is my prediction. Virtually all palms north of Waco - DEAD. Maybe someone eeks out a Sabal or Windmill in Dallas Austin - All W. Robusta and Date palms - Dead. W. Filifera, Sabal Palmetto, and Sabal Mexicana live for the most part. Still some deaths there. San Antonio. 50 percent of W. Robusta - Dead. Some surprise and live. All queen palms dead. Some date palms dead. Probably most dates survive. Every W. Filifera, Sabal, etc live on. The infamous riverwalk mules live after enduring damage. Houston. Queen palms dead. A lot of Robusta dead maybe 25 or 30 percent Every zone push zone 9 and 10 …

King Mule Palm

Hi All, New to the forum, and live in the Houston area, Sugar Land to be exact for my Houstonites. I recognize that Moon Valley Nursery has been well documented for being overpriced, but went there this weekend and was quoted 3k (each) for King Mule Palm at 4ft each, which are cold hardy (sp i am told). I lost two queen piru palms during the freeze and hoping to replace them with something a little more hardy. My gardener is able to find King Mule Palms at 2,500 dollars each installed. Does anyone know anywhere else in the Houston area i could fint 4-6ft King Mule Palms that are cheaper? I ask because i came across the following link showin…

Historic Weather Data

Does anyone know of a good website to look up historic weather data? I'm trying to find historic mininum temps for my area. I know weather underground has historic data but I know some of the numbers are wrong as it doesn't show the winter storm we had earlier this year and it says we got into single digits last year. Which I know we did not. Thanks.

Fruiting Date Palms in Northern California zone 8-9?

Hello, my name is Kyle. My horticultural journey has lead me from bonsai, cacti, and now palms! But what I love more than looking at palms is eating their fruit! So my first major palm purchase will be a fruiting variety, Phoenix Dactylsomethin, but I am concerned about their fruiting ability in Northern CA. Upon searching, I have read various times that you won't get fruit out of a palm in N CA. (Oh yeah? >:]) I'm hoping many of you will laugh at a Californian with his first world problem and tell me, of course it will fruit. I'm in Auburn CA. Edge of zone 8-9. Closer to 8. 1700'. I found a nice little gem of info Fao.org that seems like it's the date palm …
