A question I have pondered for a while... For many of you the answer may be obvious, for some, not so much. Of course, it is variable.

Growth Observations and Trachy Placement
by ColumbusPalm- 3 replies

Hey All, Wanted to share some observations I've had so far in my 6a garden in Columbus, OH. I planted 4 palms in late March, 3 minors and a Needle. They all seem to be showing some growth already which I am pretty excited about (two minors even producing inflorescence). My smaller minor is the only one so far that has shown zero signs of growth. I bought it from a grower near Lake Erie so I am wondering if it is a McCurtain or just taking its time. My great Z6 experiment is.. growing..I am also going to try a Waggie and a Naini Tal. Was hoping for opinions on placement for the Waggie (it will be a larger palm). I am planning on some good protectio…

Are Hybrid Palmate Species Possible?
by BeyondTheGarden- 2 followers

When you look for hybrid palms, all kinds of pinnate genus' seem possible to hybridize. Butias, Jubaeas, Parajubaeas, Syagrus, Lytocaryum, all mixed together. I'm sure there are more inter-species hybrids in existence that I'm unaware of. But when it comes to palmate hybrids, I've only ever seen intra-species hybrids. Trachycarpus fortunei x wagnerianus. Sabal minor x palmetto. Washingtonia robusta x filifera (those are the only examples I can think of, off-hand). Would it be possible to hybridize different genus's of palmate palms? I'm going to take artistic liberty and list some of the genus's that I think would be cool to play with (most in this list are …

I have had two of these in the ground for over 15 years now. I have never seen a flower in all these years. How long will they take to flower? They have gotten quite large & I'm about ready to dig them up & sell them as they really aren't very appealing to me...

S. Palmetto vs. S. Minor seedling differentiation

So I’ve been growing some palmetto seedlings for a few years now and they’re starting to get more palmate fronds. I bought a big thing of Sabal Palmetto seeds a few years ago and they germinated and gave me these. I believe I also bought Sabal minor seeds to scatter around in the woods. My memory is the worst and I’m not sure if I actually germinated a Sabal minor or not. I was looking at some of the seedlings and I was struck by how blue some of them were. Do I have some Sabal minors mixed in or do Palmettos also have this bluish hue when they’re young. Thanks and I apologize for my forgetfulness!

Hey All, I decided to plant the larger Louisiana. It’s South facing and gets beat with the sun. The cannas I plant in this bed I leave and they come back every year so I think the soil is at least 6b/7a micro. I’m in a Z6a in Columbus, OH. What are the chances this will survive?

Newly planted sabal palm question
by Sean.N.GulfBreeze- 7 replies
Hello all, I recently (February 2021) had 3 Sabal Palms planted in a row behind my home. I'm in the Florida Panhandle zone 9a and I have a question about one of them. Two of them are doing great, with noticeable growth and spears that are beginning to open. The other on, not so much. The spear is there, it's green, but hasn't moved an inch since it was planted. It get's plenty of water and is rooting well (I shake them from time to time and notice they are getting harder to move so I know they're rooting). Do you think this one is just focusing energy to roots? How much time should I give it till I contact the landscaper that installed them? They have a polic…

I decided to create a Journal to share over time for these with culture and temperature data over their lifetime here in 8a. I placed my order for these on April 19th 2020. They shipped April 21st, and arrived today April 23rd. These are 3yr old Syagrus romanzoffiana var. 'Litoralis' seedlings in 4"x4"x14" tree liners from MPOM stock parents I believe [forgot to ask but have sent out an inquiry] that are used in hybridization. Michael has been easy to work with, keeps good communication, and I have received what I have ordered quickly. 1 seedling will be planted 1 seedling will be potted 1 seedling will be given away in…

Princeps hardiness ?
by WSimpson- 5 replies
I thought Trachy princepses were as hardy as regular Fortunei but I don't remember my Princeps having what looks like winter damage on it in past winters . The newest spears look fine but 2 fronds and 1 spear has damage . My lowest low last winter was 16F and after that I had 5 lows in the lower 20'sF -25F . A mild winter for here . How hardy are they ? Thanks
