by ColumbusPalm- 5 replies

Hey All, I just snagged this locally for $20. It was labeled “Chinese fan palm”. I know it’s a Trachy, likely just a regular fortunei? Just wanted to verify. Thanks in advance!

Thin Trunks
by ahosey01- 3 replies

Looking for some recommendations on palms that can take the desert heat and sun and cold down to the 20s, but also have skinny trunks. Only thing I can think of is W. robusta - which I am absolutely unable to find in pure form. Any other suggestions? I have a couple spots that are kind of narrow, so I’d like to fill in with something.

Does anyone have any current experience regarding Phoenix acaulis. Apparently hardy to 20F, but there seems to be very little information on these anywhere. I’ve seen a few people here on the forum have them. Pics of the new to me palm.

These are a few palm pics I took today July 16. We don’t see New Mexico palms on here very often so here are some. Sorry about the quality as I was driving by snapping most pics. Too many palms around to pull over and take a good pic of them all.

Need More Palms

Hey guys! Been a while since I have posted here because of time challenges with going back to school and a new job. I am up to 18 species of palms in the yard. I need more. First, the lowdown on my unique growing conditions, then the list. I live in Wickenburg, AZ. This is the mid-elevation Sonoran desert. I live at the bottom of the Hassayampa river valley in a Cottonwood forest. It’s probably 10-15% more humid in my neighborhood than in the ones just up the hill. The soil at my house is mostly clay-ish, but is a dark brown earthworm bonanza, which is highly unusual for Arizona. I attribute this to two sequential historical factors: - Before pe…

Trapping Heat and Humidity with plastic
by ZPalms- 9 replies

So I have my sabal enclosed with this fence but I was thinking because I have a plastic tarp, Would it be ok if I cover the fence with the plastic tarp and trap heat and humidity or would it cause any bad effects or bacteria on the palm or will it just be a greenhouse?

Lots of new growth!
by ColumbusPalm- 7 replies

I don’t remember my growing season being this good when I had some cold hardy palms 15 years ago. Everything is loving this Ohio summer. This Trachy (maybe Waggie hybrid) was planted on June 17th. It has now fully pushed out a new frond and has one rapidly opening. Didn’t expect it to settle in so quickly but am happy I’ll get some good growth this season. June 17th Today Minors flowering and pushing new fronds. Needle growing much faster than I thought. Second frond of the season almost open. Nate

Cactus, Palm and Citrus Potting Mix

I've seen a bag of of this stuff (by Miracle-Gro) at the big box stores and been tempted to try it on young palms and even citrus. I asked a friend of mine about it and he said he'd tried it before but didn't like it because he thought it dries out too readily. Thoughts on this?

La Niña Officially Forecasted (Again)

Hey All, I know this is technically climate and weather but it definitely is something zone pushers pay attention to! https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/7902196002 First official prediction is another La Niña this fall/winter. Our low in central Ohio last winter was 5F and 2 weeks below freezing. The precipitation La Niña brings to the Midwest is something I’m not looking forward to. I may have to protect all of the palms with my burlap/clear tarp structure to keep moisture at bay for them. Picture of my favorite minor to ward off any thoughts of cold associated with this post lol

I planted a juvenile 4 years old Trachycarpus wagnerianus, which I had grown up from seed in 2003, on 28 April 2007 outdoors in Heidelberg/Germany at 49.4°N. The following pics document the very limited growth and its struggle with long and hard freezes. Here are the photos of the first 4 years outdoors from 2007 to 2011. (1) first day in the ground (2007-04-28) (2) first winter outdoors (2008-02-03) (3) after the 3rd winter (2010-03-12) (4) the 4th summer (2010-07-19) (5) the 4th winter (2011-01-01) (6) the 5th summer outdoors (2011-08-20)

Water your minors… Then do it again!

I think most already know this on here… But I just want to confirm that my minors LOVE water. We have had some consistent heat (90+) in Ohio the last week so I watered my palms every morning, then we had tons of rain yesterday and today and this frond has 100% opened more in the last week because of it.

I am thinking about buying a male/female pair of Phoenix dactylifera for my yard near Austin. But will our cold winters keep them from thriving enough to bear fruit? Would another date palm do better? Or do I need to forget about growing dates?

A Cycad for South Central Texas

Good morning Palmtalk Friends, I've been tracking this gorgeous cycad in the King William area of San Antonio for the past few years and was curious how it would do following the complete defoliation that occurred in this past winter’s freeze. Yesterday I got the opportunity to walk by for the first time in a month and was happy to see that it had completely regrown its fronds. I’m not sure why they are not more available in the trade in this area, they are drop-dead gorgeous and much more interesting looking, in my opinion, than the ubiquitous Cycad revoluta. Here is Dioon edule in all its glory:

Rhapsis Help

Yesterday, I bought a Rhapsis from a local nursery for $20. He has several healthy plants, but he wants more than I’m willing to pay. Does anyone have any advice on getting this thing healthy looking again? He had it in full sun, and I’m not positive it received enough water. I added some liquid copper Fungicide to the stalks that the spear pulled to try revive any potential life that remains in them. You can see where some of the stalks are starting to push new growth. The roots were exposed, so I covered them with potting soil. I also put it in a shady spot, and sprinkled some slow release fertilizer on it. I believe it’s Scott’s 8-6-8 Palm Fertilizer with nutrie…
