I Just want tips from people who already own trachys and where should I plant them? is part shade better or full sun and does the crown of the palm depend on the lighting because I've seen pictures of trachys that have very small thin shrunken crowns which I want to avoid and how does heat affect this palm or do they like it to be cooler?

Takil help
by ColumbusPalm- 3 replies
Hey All, Just got these two takils on FB marketplace. Less than thrilled with the state of the palms, but the trunks do seem to verify they are takil which is a pro. Does this look like chlorosis in tandem with a fungal issue? I got them in a good soil mix and fertilized them and treated with copper fungicide. Any other tips or thoughts of the health of these? Giving this a try. It's the same way I germinate Jubaea chilensis. Dry seeds until they rattle, crack in vise and remove shell, place on slightly damp sterile medium with embryo down. Second photo, Jubaeaopsis caffra seed on bottom left.

Mystery Sabal Minor
by Tennessee Palms- 4 replies

One of my Sabal Minors has completely different fronds from the other's. They are larger, stiffer, not as deeply divided, and they have strange folds. I'm beginning to wonder if it isn't a different sabal like sabal x brazoriensis.

Saw Palmetto(?) in the wild in Outer Banks?
by Palmy Pal- 4 replies
I went to the outer banks a month ago and this palm stuck out to me a lot and clearly was not the Sabal palmetto nor Sabal minor that are native to cape hatteras. To me this looks like it is a saw palmetto which is very odd considering they are not native to NC none the less on an island In NC. And I think the specimen is too old to have been introduced there. And note this was not in the woods near any homes or anything where a saw palmetto seed could drop. This was deep in a wooded preserve near a swampy area. This is the only one I saw and I found it quite odd. Let me know what y’all think

I noticed this on my newest minor frond today. My tropical plant experience says fungus but the genetics of minor says maybe physical damage or something? What do you all think?

The worst prolonged cold in 20 years, with a minimum of 15 F, and 4 consecutive days below freezing had the effect of wiping out all of the W. robusta. In Dallas, TX in 2011 Here are some images of that winters effect on filibustas, 2 years later. What is your prognosis?

We decided to take a short get away this week, so we went to Fernandina Beach (about 45 minutes down the road across the Georgia/Florida line). I’m not sure how many pictures I’ll have a chance to take for the next couple if days, but here are just a few.

Windmill Palm recovery
by Jcalvin- 4 replies

Living in the very extreme part of SE Georgia, Windmill Palms really aren’t a “go to” palm for the area. Most of them, unless grown in the shade, look pretty bad, IMO. And even then, Windmills don’t do well with the nematodes that are in the Sandy loam here. Anyways, about 4 years ago I saw a pair on Facebook Market Place that an old guy in Hoboken just wanted to get rid of. They were grown under a huge live oak, and they actually looked really healthy. Both of them had a 4.5’-5’ trunk, but they were full of fans about 4’ long. So, I dug up as much root as possible in the middle of the July heat, loaded them up, and planted them in two different shady spots in t…

Sabal palm browning
by Futuresvt- 3 replies
Planted these on March 21st this year. I watered heavy in the beginning almost daily. It has been an unusual cooler summer for us in Georgia. Haven’t had a day in July over 90. Lots of cloud cover and rain. When I check the 3-4 inches of mulch is always damp. I added some sand to our clay soil when I planted the palms. The spear is still green with no or very little signs of new growth. I have added some of the Jobes organic palm fertilizer about 3 weeks ago. I went on the lighter side and used about 2ish cups per palm. Why do I have one palm starting to brown more than the other two? Should I be concerned?

Mystery Sabal

I bought these unnamed Sabal palms and I'm starting to really become curious as to what species they are. They are pretty small and they are already pushing more adultish looking leaves. The leaves are a nice blue/green color. They have experienced frost and at least 27 degrees F in a pot. Does anyone know what they could be? Thanks

Hi planted this sabal palm. The company trimmed the roots right from what I could tell. However, they tied the fronds instead of cutting. What’s the best advice on leaving it this way or cutting some?? edit: uploading pics keeps failing Overall height is 9-10ft with 3.5’ of trunk.

Sabal Bermudana

Here is my one and only Sabal. I have, Sabal Bermudana has been pretty hardy and slow for me (one leaf a year). Growing in mostly shade to help protect from deep freezes. 16F had minor damage on one frond. Spear undamaged. People in cooler climate might want to try this one too. Anyone else growing this extra big leaf Sabal and your thoughts on growing this palm? How much water do they need in fast draining soil? I water once a week about 5 gallon. New leaf coming out now.

Thriving Butia in 7b

I heard about this large butia growing in the Raleigh suburb of Fuquay-Varina. I was already nearby so I thought I'd check it out and I took this picture of it yesterday. I also looked at in on Google Streetview and determined it was planted sometime between 2014 and 2016. That means it also survived our terrible 2018 winter with low temps in the single digits. This gives me hope for my butia in my Raleigh yard.

All the sudden the new fronds on my windmill are coming in burnt and dead. I try watering often in the heat. I live in the Charlotte area in NC and have had this palm there a couple years now. Never had this happen. Over the winter the new fronds came in bent and not great looking from cold, but the ones in between winter and now were normal. See pics

Old Windmill in New Bern, NC
by NCFM- 3 replies

Unfortunately I could not get a picture of the entire trunk because a tree was blocking the view and the palm is behind a fence, but it looked to be every bit of 35 feet tall. Hopefully it won’t get struck by lightning any time soon! Very good condition for a windmill in that area, normally they don’t do so well in the sweltering heat and sandy soil of the coastal plain Also saw some Sabal minor growing wild at a nearby park, larger fronds than I’m used to seeing:
