Texas Queens Palms After Freeze 2021 1 2

These are alive. Mine had made it though 14.5 but are dead. Looks like 2 in Sugar Land lived through low 10s. He is using Silver Queen and Litoralis as the same. They are not, Also how does he know what they? He should state their background. Most likely they are what was termed silver queens. If they are 30 years old, they may have been from offspring that survived in the RGV, Laredo or north Florida. Those were the silver queens. I had those, I had plants purchased from the RGV. My Litoralis were recent introduction ( Late 2000s) and I got my seedling from Jeff Marcus. I still have a 15 gallon Litoralis, and I have seeds from this past fall from my Silver Q…

Trachycarpus Fortunei Sensitivity to Heat

I have two Trachycarpus Fortunei outside on our Washington, DC patio. They remain outside year round. Early on, I was convinced that winter extremes would test the hardiness of these two, but after a couple of years I've noticed more sensitivity to extreme heat than anything else. Both are in large pots and are about 3 feet high with fronds spreading about 4 feet wide. They get a good 6 hours of direct and indirect sunlight, with some obstruction of light due to a Sago alongside and in front of the Trachy). By mid July, despite watering every other day or as it appears to be needed the tips of the lower fronds appear slightly green/brown, with some of them appearing …

Needle Palm at the Franklin Park Conservatory

This has been there for a long time. I’ve always wanted to suggest to them to move it outside, now that I’m getting better with palms, also want to suggest to them to stop trimming it so severely! Either way, pretty cool to see one with such a big trunk in person.

Mule and Company

Just a few August pics of a couple of my mules as well as accompanying plants in the mailbox bed. These 2 mules have been my slowest growing but have started to pick up pace this year. They've both been in these spots through 2 winters. In the bed with the larger one I've added some snow and summer asiatic jasmine, sweet potato vine, orange bird of paradise, American agave (thanks @Laaz), blue liriope, and some cordyline. I've been on the hunt for purple queens to add to the mix but no luck so far. Thanks for looking

Windmill Palm Suddenly Wilting
by knikfar- 4 replies

Hello all, I planted this windmill palm in my yard about 5 months ago. It was looking fantastic up until about two weeks ago. Then the lower fronds started to droop. Then the centers of all of the fronds started to yellow a bit and now I'm noticing the individual blades are folded in half. I live in Raleigh, NC where these palms are prolific. It's planted in a mostly sunny area that doesn't drain very well so I mounded it up when I planted it. But because it doesn't drain well and the area stays fairly moist, I haven't given it any supplemental water and it's been hot and dry for weeks. Could this be drought stress? I thought it could also be a fungus so I spra…

Hi I live in South Wales uk and bought a decent sized one for £395, not sure if worth it but oh well. My soil is clay mixed with top soil and sand and the reason why sand is because the landscapers after rotorvating did me a new lawn with superior drainage. Now what do I plant my vulcano in? I have a bag of multipurpose compost, top soil, ericaceous compost, a bag of perlite and a bag of coarse grit, anything else I need please let me know as I'm having the palm delivered in 3 days time.here is a pic of palm i bought.

Looking for an ID On this Sabal
by Tennessee Palms- 5 replies

I'm trying to figure out what this Sabal is. It's growing pretty fast for a sabal, I'm thinking that this may be a Brazoria. I've had someone tell me it could be a Rosei however it does have silvery undersides. It's quite an unusual plant, I bought it as a Sabal minor. It's overall growth rate is really fast for a Sabal.

Washy update :

Eleven seasons in the ground counting this season . Someone brought it to my attention that this looks pretty much like all Robusta . I bought it as a Filibusta , but I have to admit I don't see much purple on the petiole bases and the trunk is pretty thin . I wish I had a Filibusta more on the Filifera side because I can use all the hardiness possible that can handle the humidity , and it might grow a little slower in height too . Also , the frond hardiness is only hardy to 23F , so all the fronds pretty much look bad after every winter , whereas if it were a Filibusta some years it might look decent after winter . What do you guys think ? Than…

Is my sabal minor actually 3 plants or just one?
by maskedmole- 8 replies
So I noticed my sabal minor is growing faster than my needles who take forever to push out one spear but my sabal minor is currently growing like 3 spears. I look closer and see it almost looks like 3 different sabal minors like 3 different starting points. Is that just how they look or is it 3 different plants? If so should I separate them or will they be totally fine the way they are? This is how it came in the pot.

Hello Guys, do you have any experience with sago deep cutting? I have 2 sagos. 2021 Texas freeze damage. I was checking the tops weekly and they were firm until today. Today the top came came off. I cut the tops about 6 inches deep and sagos' cores are rotten. But there is firm and live tissue around the cores. Do you have any experience with sago cutting? I couldn't find anything online. Thanks in advance, S

Trachys & Sabals in Pots - Wintering
by ColumbusPalm- 4 replies
Hey All, I have quite a few palms in pots. As we get nearer to fall/winter, I am wondering what to do with them as I do not have a garage. I do have a wood shed but not sure if that would be warm enough for them?Should I leave them out and just put them in the shed with Christmas lights and maybe heat mats underneath the pots during the coldest weeks/days? Not sure how quickly soil in the pots would freeze but if the highs were in the 40s in the day and 20s at night, would that freeze them? That's a typical January/February here with some cold snaps here and there that may last a week. Appreciate any opinions on it.

Washingtonia Robusta Zone 8b Oregon

I bought this Washingtonia robusta at the beginning of summer. Since then it has grown multiple new leaves. It was one of my few potted plants that I didn't move to shade during our record breaking heat wave. It handled 117 degrees like it was nothing. The location where I have it gets sun almost all day and is covered in concrete and asphalt so it really bakes in the afternoon sun. I'm excited to see how it does through the winter here.

Jubaea Soil

2nd Jubaea post… trying to figure out where to plant this thing. Should it go into organically rich, heavy soil? Or should it go into sandy, alkaline soil? I know some palms prefer the first, some the second, and some don’t care in the slightest.

I have a great Palm and Tropical nursery I go to get some of my plants called Dixie Acres in Folkston, Ga/ about 15 minutes from the Florida line. Today I was talking to George, the owner, and he said he’s getting a number of palms and plants in next week. One of them was dwarf sugar palm. Does anyone have any experience with these in 9a/8b? I looked in the freeze data forum, but there wasn't much info there.

How much time before winter?
by Sabal King- 2 followers

We're finishing up our backyard projects with a brand new retaining wall around the house and I have some palms in pots that I plan on putting in the ground immediately upon completion as I have the spots picked out and everything. The palms are 3G S. Lisa, nice big size to them and really look very nice. We hope to finish the project sometime in early to mid-August I would think. Would it make sense to get them in the ground right away to get a few months in the ground, or would you keep them in the pots and plant in spring first thing next year? Essentially, I'm trying to figure out how much time they need in ground before winter. Thanks in advance!

My washies are looking good but their growth seemed to have slowed down for some reason because the 3rd strap leaf has been taking a very long time to push through, I wish the other empty bags would germinate I put seeds in them because they looked like they were going to root but so far nothing. I know nothing when it comes to fertilizing plants but when is the proper time to start fertilizing palms in general or do you not fertilize seedling?
