Trachy Health Question
by GregVirginia7- 5 replies

There is a perimeter of fronds on my Trachy that have very pronounced yellow segment tips...the newer fronds above this line are clear of any of it. The lower fronds have always had a slight case of it but it’s more pronounced on this ring of fronds...it’s gotten two Palmgain feedings this season...wouldn’t concern me except it’s so pronounced but only occupies about two inches of the segment edge...

What's this on my Sabal?
by DAVEinMB- 2 replies

Happy Sunday everyone. Took some photos last night of this white stuff on my sabal. It almost looked like webbing for insect eggs but when I scraped some of it off there was nothing inside. This area of the yard sees very very little sun so I'm assuming it's mildew of some kind but thought I'd see if it was something that required attention. Thanks! Dave Ps, I've had to reduce the quality of my photos in order for them to post so they may be a tad pixelated if you zoom in

Hi, I have been growing some Trachycarpus fortunei and Chamaerops humilis with some protection here in Eastern Austria. I think we are considered usda 7b/8a here. The Chamaerops had some winter damage this year but is coming back strong. I was wondering if its possible for me to also plant pinnate palms other than Jubaea chilensis. Are there also other pinnate palms which would grow here? At least as hardy as Chamaerops? I was thinking about some Butias but I haven't tried one yet. Does somebody grow pinnates here in Central Europe? Cheers, Will

I have a queen palm that survived the Texas winter storm. It had a spear rotting that I pulled out and trimmed it down until only fresh growth was there. Went from 10 to 8 feet so still a healthy big palm. It has since produced two small leaves. It finally sprouted a big spear a few weeks back but it doesn't coming out more than a foot , looks green and healthy and opening up. However it is not shooting out like I expected it to. I have tried to fertilize and give water but no change so any advice on any action I can take? I am afraid if I don't get enough fonds before winter it won't survive another winter.

In 2006, thanks to the Southeast Palm Society Hometown Grant (which the SPS gave out every year to plant palm in public places), I was able to plant a bunch of cold hardy palms on the campus of The University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Here are some pictures of the Needle Palms (there were also Sabal minor and S. sp. 'Birmingham' palms planted) right after planting in 2006. Palm #1: Palm #2: Palm #3: And these pictures of the same palms 8 years later in 2014. Keep in mind that this is after a brutal winter where the temperature in Knoxville dropped to -1F (-18C). Palm #1. This one gets full sun most of the day, and has a lighter color…

More yard pics (Spring to now before and after)

What a hot, wet summer we’ve had in the Midwest. Looking back at some spring pics, holy smokes. Not only have the palms loved it, everything has. Although I had to treat several landscape plants for fungus this year… Worth it for the growth! Needle looks kind of the same, definitely fuller. Opening frond 3 of the season on the main trunk but the pups have all pushed at least one out too. Hope you enjoyed. Beyond finishing the fronds that are almost open I don’t think I’ll get much more from them besides the Trachy this year. I wish this was my permanent home but hopefully the next owners will get to enjoy the needle and mino…

Pollinating cycads (coontie)

Hi everyone - I have what I believe are a female and male cone (see pics) from some of my coonties. I watched a YouTube video that showed how to tap the pollen from the male cone, add to a spray water bottle, and then soak the female cone with this mixture. Does anybody have experience and success doing that? Or a different recommended method? I’m also not sure how to tell when the male cone is “ready.” It has just emerged over the last few days and seems to be less far along than the female cone. As long as it’s above ground, is it “ripe”? thanks for any advice!

Can I relocate my Sabal Minors
by knikfar- 6 replies

Until recently, I had a stormwater issue in my backyard. About a year ago, I built a raingarden to help catch some of the excess water from running off into my neighbors house. It's shown in the attached photo. Knowing sabal minors would do well there, I planted three of them. However, the stormwater issue has now been fixed and my rain garden is never likely to fill with water again. So I'd LOVE to place my sabal minors in a place that's more prominant in my yard. But everything I've read says they HATE being moved and most die in the process. Any one have any advice?

Fixed my Takils
by ColumbusPalm- 8 replies

Hey all, I had some takils delivered a month or so ago and they were in rough shape. I’m going to include before and after pics. They’ve been treated with fungicide twice and fertilized with a rooting hormone and jacks palm food. I see quite a difference already with them getting their minty green back and the yellow fading. I’ll be excited to plant them in the spring. Before After Nate

Anybody have experience growing any Sabal minor varieties in full inland sun? Curious.. have had success with small Sabal palmetto, which isn’t an understory species. I’ve had mixed results with Sabal miamiensis, which is an understory species.

Trachycarpus takagii x Trachycarpus wagnerianus

My fathers Trachycarpus takagii (T. wagnerianus x T. fortunei F1) flowered for the first time this year (female). He pollinated it with Trachycarpus wagnerianus and seeds appear to be developing. Hoping the resultant backcross (T. takagii x T. wagnerianus) will stiffen the leaves further (more wind resistance) without significantly reducing leaf size. My father and I had a little chuckle at the irony because he was the first out of the two of us to produce a cross. I emigrated to Australia in 2019 to follow my dream to grow a wider variety of palms and create hybrids, yet my father (who’s not that interested in them) beat me to the punch in the UK.

Massive Waggie palm - Portland, Oregon

The video doesn't do it justice, this is one you have to see in person to believe. I have seen ones nearly as tall but they didn't have the mass of huge fronds like this one does. Palm is located at Cistus Design Nursery on Sauvie Island (just outside Portland).

On my never ending quest to find plants, I came across some big med fan palms for 20 bucks! I have 0 need for this plant, but I'm sure I will cram it in somewhere. They had several others that were more clumpy, and a few that were very sad. Also had 3 gal size for 6 bucks, but they were a little scrawny. And 5 gallon windmills that were nice for 20$. They were all tagged as "fan palms". Livistona species.... HD on Racine in Wilmington NC, if anyone in the area is trying to scavenge.

I went to visit Cistus Nursery today just outside of Portland, Oregon and happened upon this beauty. Pretty rare to find Sabals in our area, especially one like “Birmingham”. For those that are interested there were around 10 available. I don’t expect them to be around long.

I'm noticing that my Butia fruit on my oldest clump is maturing and changing color . I wouldn't be concerned except that I'm noticing some of the fruit are falling on the ground . What is the best way to harvest these ? I don't want them to all fall off and rot before I can harvest them . Thanks

When do I stop watering Sabals for winter
by newtopalmsMD- 2 followers

This year I see lots of people are watering sabals every or every other day. I adopted this practice and it seems to have benefited my newer sabals (Louisiana in particular is on its 5th pretty large frond of the summer). I see this advice (though less often) for Trachys as well. So my question is, for 7a areas, when do we stop the daily watering in preparation for winter? I'm in MD with pretty hot and humid summers...good for sabals, maybe not as good for Trachys. My sabals range in age from a sabal minor Cape Hatteras that put out its first palmate frond this summer to a sabal minor in its second year of putting out seeds, to Brazorias, Louisiana and Birmingham in…

Sabal Minor
by GregVirginia7- 8 replies

Two Sabal Minors doing well in Bethany Beach, Delaware...they’ve been unprotected and in-ground since, I think, 2017...they get a couple rounds of Palmgain and lots of water when I’m here...I do cover the area around them with a thick layer of pine needles for winter. Very happy with their performance...They really have pretty substantial crowns and maybe they’ll start trunking just a little bit, though I don’t think minors have that characteristic...however, my Brazoria at home is getting the beginnings of a nice trunk! I have three offspring growing in Virginia from these and look forward to the same cold hardy success with them.

Fat and Thin

These two are part of a row of sabals in downtown myrtle. Always interesting to me to see the trunk diameter differences in these palms. I've always figured that differences in growing conditions (amount of light, water, temperature, etc) played a major role in making this happen but you can throw that theory out the window with these.

This is in the wrong section, but it doesn’t look like the Weather/Climate board gets a lot of attention. Remove if this is against the rules. I was just wondering, for those that live in the SE, how much rain have you accumulated in the past month or two. I don’t know exactly how much we’ve accumulated here in SE Georgia. The climate sites that I know of are limited to the amount of data they collect. I haven’t found a website that collects rainfall data for my city or any cities that are near it. My parents have a 12” rain gauge, and they emptied it at the beginning of July. They say that it overflowed once about two weeks ago, and just in …
