Need Opinions. My quest is to collect the cold hardy palms for north Florida as determined by UF

The University of Florida has put together a document titled "Palms of North Florida" with a list of palms suitable for this climate. My goal is to collect them all*, or close to all. There is one issue though, there are many "duplicates" on the list. Although these palms are different species... is a Trachycarpus fortunei really all that different from a T. oreophilus/takil/wagnerianus? I need some opinions on what can be eliminated from the list based simply on whether or not the palms are too similar so I can consolidate the list without my landscape being littered with trachycarpus palms which all look the same. Maybe one day I'll collect them all... bu…

Phoenix roebelenii fronds breaking?
by P. Hightower- 2 replies

Hello. I have had a triple trunk Phoenix Robellini for about 2 months and in the last month I have had 5 fronds break off the the smallest trunk. The tops of all of the trees look to be green and healthy but there seems to be some yellowing and spots on the lower fronds. I also notice there are areas on the trunk that look exposed and yellow. At first I thought they may have been snapped by the pool guy but I lost three fronds when he had not been at the house. Next I thought it may be wind but this too seems unlikely. Tonight I found another one laying at the base. The yellow areas on the trunk also seems a to be more pronounced. The other two larger trunks a…

Spray foam for spear protection
by Advective- 8 replies
Whenever ice is in the forecast, I wrap the spears of my palms with a thick layer of frost blanket. Without it, they have a tendency to spear pull. As they get taller with full crowns, this is becoming less safe and it isn't realistically possible with palms like Washingtonia. Can I use spray foam in the crevices where the spear emerges to keep ice out? I'm envisioning a scenario where it keeps everything water tight and then the foam gets pushed out with new growth in the spring. However: 1. Is spray foam likely to be toxic to palms and might there be a non-toxic version? 2. Is it assured that the palm would push out the foam or might it gum things up?

Jubaea Root Sensitivity

I have a small Jubaea (planted last year from a 5G) that has barely had time to establish. I need to move it. What are the chances I kill it if I dig up a nice root ball and stick it in a different part of the yard? It's not like a small Sabal, Bismarckia or Brahea armata is it?

Sabal Palmetto in freezing rain
by BobStrauss- 8 replies
So I’m in San Antonio, TX and last spring had a sabal palmetto put in my backyard. Maybe 6’ of trunk to it. We’re getting freezing rain/sleet at the moment, it’s around 30 degrees now and dropping. Lows over the next few days shouldn’t drop below 20. I know these are cold hardy but mine was only transplanted last spring, the fronds are dropping - simply unhappy or weighed down by the ice, not sure. Should I be concerned, or try to protect somehow? With even the cold hardy sabals, should I expect to lose foliage in situations like these?

First palm!! Curious about some things.

Hello all. A couple of days ago I picked up a mediteranean fan palm and will be planting it as soon as our lows stop dropping below freezing. I am located in the ft worth area. I was wondering if I should be worried about anything in the pictures. I dont remember seeing brown tips or white residue at the nursery when we picked it up. It was in a green house previously and spent a night and day cycle in my garage before getting it some sun. I gave it a good soak once outside and about a quarter cup of palm fertilizer since the nursery said they didnt feed it. I left it out overnight since the lows only got down to 50. I forgot about my sprinklers so it got hit with…

The palms will be put to the test here soon. I hate seeing temps this low and worrying about palms. I don’t protect palms because they need to take a winter head on. Only the strong survive but seriously here comes the burnt foliage.

Who’s growing Serenoa Repens (saw palmetto)?

There’s been post on here before, I’ve dug and found them. Seems like a native palm that gets forgotten about. I’ve seen good clumps of them in Florida, and incredible pictures of especially the silver form and some that had vertical trunks. If anyones growing them I would love to see pics and pick your brain!

I heard that the Jubaea chilensis is the most cold hardy feather palm, but I though that was the Butia Capitata? Do you know which is true? Thank you for reading!

Trachys: misleading survival rate
by smatofu- 11 replies
Hi, after last winter of the century in Texas (2021, temp down to 0F), trachies survival rate was maybe 50% (extremely rough estimate). I saw green fronds on those surviving trachies in spring and summer. In the last few months I was surprised to see many supposedly live trachies to die! Including one of mine (very healthy palm before the winter) I cut the trunk on my palm. The bottom part of the trunk was white/yellowish/healthy, the top part of the trunk had a slight brown color tint. It is a reminder how delicate palms are and that they have very small abilities to recover from stresses!!!

Palm pot/liner question
by zimm- 2 followers

I started out using 4x13.5 liners and then for better space efficiency switched to 2.5x10 liners. I think they are great but have come across two epiphanies. First - potting up from 2.5x10 to 4x13.5 is pretty difficult. There is just .75” on each side to be able to shovel dirt down into, and more often than not the palm doesn’t come out of the small liner with all dirt intact so there are voids down in there to fill that I can’t get to. I would almost have to bare root the thing to do this. Second - going from either of these liners to a larger pot is difficult unless it is HUGE due to the size. It seems like I have to jump up to a 5-7gal (trade size) pot to…

Welp thee ice storm, she's a comin and I can't let some of the residents go in without a raincoat. Here's what's getting protection (in no particular order as far as the pictures go): - Phoenix Canariensis - Phoenix Dactylifera - Phoenix Reclinata hybrid - Phoenix Roebelenii x Dactylifera - 3 standard queens - 2 Uruguay queens - 1 Litoralis queen - Arenga Engleri - Allagoptera Arenaria - Unknown Phoenix species - 2 Lytocaryum Hoehnei - 2 Cordyline Australis - Australian Tree Fern The smaller stuff I just put buckets over; the bigger stuff I covered with contractor garbage bags. If using multipl…

Palm Fertilizer preferences

Recently transplanted palms showing new growth but it seems to be very light/whitish and the butias new spear (one of) is a bit spindly. Was really light on the fertilizer at transplant. Used super thrive recommended dose and half the minimum dose of fox farm grow big 6-4-4. I think they’re just needing more nutrients just wondering what everyone likes and has had good results from. Organic good. Just had the fox farm on hand and the stuff works, just not sure about on palms. Read a NPK 3:1:3 ratio is good so something 6-2-6 or around that? They focused on rooting not foliage maybe? The little one is a T. Fortunei. Thanks for any input.

People often ask, which is more cold hardy? W. Filifera or S. Mexicana. Last winter in Dallas we had a test for cold endurance. 3F with 10 consecutive days below freezing. I wouldn’t make a sweeping generalization, but more s. Mexicanas survived than did the washingtonianas. Large adult specimens of both species were wiped out. There were a few survivors of both species. In the following images you will see the one large palm specimen that survived ( with its foliage intact too) among a group of palms. An adult and nearby juvenile Sabal mexicana survived among 5 filifera. All grown on site from seedlings.

Treatment and Recovery

I wanted to start a post on the treatments and recoveries of everyone’s various palms that took a hit in December. I had 3 spear pulls, and know others did too. Who’s palms pulled? How was it/they treated (specifics)? and follow ups appreciated going forward. Myself had a Butiagrus, and 2 of Frank Lewis Super mules. TREATMENT: treated with 3% peroxide, allowed that to set in for an hour or two then wicked out the water with paper towel. Followed by copper fungicide, filled the open spear holes and let sit 2 hrs. Then again wicked out the moisture. Been repeating this every 2-3 days. Happy to report that the Butiagrus is already pushing new green spear. After only 2 weeks!…

Healthy NC CIDP

Driving by Cedar Island NC today which is on the sound and a little bit further south than Hatteras, I found a sizeable CIDP that looks very healthy. Seems to be a good microclimate—not as windy as Hatteras, but still protected by the bodies of water surrounding the island. Just took these photos, but it looked just as healthy this winter.

Braheas in the Pacific Northwest...
by MarkbVet- 2 followers

Hello again.... now I'm curious about who has been growing Braheas (and which species) in our cool, wet northwest US/Canada. The more common ones, including Brahea armata & Brahea clara, but also Brahea berlandieri (aka B. dulcis blue form), B. decumbens, B. dulcis, Brahea 'nuri' etc.-- all of which show promise in their cold tolerance (moisture tolerance is the other concern of course). Hit me up with pics and knowledge, and include how much winter protection you're using (or not). Would love to hear about unprotected success stories!

Washy Concerns
by JohnAndSancho- 9 replies
Hey y'all, My Washy, Dirty Sanchez - every new frond is coming in shorter and shorter. It's been going on for a couple months now. We haven't had any heavy cold snaps yet - it did drop down to the high 20s for a few hours, but this was going on even before then. Any ideas as to why? It's got some bent fronds from wind, but other than that it's been a pretty solid growing plant until maybe November or so. I don't over water or over feed it, all the other plants on my patio seem happy so I don't think it's a fungal or pest issue unless it's something specific to Washies regionally. Thoughts?

Washy protection :

It was already looking rough after a 20F and a 3" heavy snow . Then I had another snow which was mainly was sleet came through . Now I'm seeing anywhere from 13F to 17F within a week so I decided to put on the protection . It's just Xmas lights and a layer of blankets and some mulch at the base . I'll only need the protection on it below 16F but I might turn it on in late winter to force early growth . The top is open a little so it can grow when it gets milder . Will
