Hello, I just joined the forum today. I have been growing palms for a few years now, but I have always brought them indoors for the winter. This year I decided to try growing 3 varieties of hardy palms: Trachycarpus Fortunei, Washingtonia Robusta, and Chilean Wine Palms. I bought seeds on eBay. I have found good instructions on the TFs and the WRs, but I haven’t found anything reliable on the Chilean Wine Palm seeds. Has anyone had experience growing these from seeds? Some sites suggest breaking the shell off, while others don’t. I have them soaking in water at the present time and I will be planting them on Friday. I am hoping to get some good advice before then. Th…

I bought some seeds from ebay, non of which ever germinated vs seeds I collected first hand which has a very high rate. Anybody here got any suggestions?

Surgery/deep cut palms years later

Hi, Just out of curiosity about deep cutting cold damaged palms: I saw many pictures of those cuts weeks after the surgery with small fronds coming out, but I never saw photos of those palms years after. Do they really survive next winter? Any permanent damage to the trunk? Do young fronds have time to mature before they are hit with harsh summer sun? Thanks in advance, S.

Never ever protected beyond existing water oak canopy...granted the bud of these palms are at ground level but was pleasantly surprised nonetheless. Long duration 25F and freezing rain(!) Licuala fordiana...spear pulled but second spear is coming right up! Lanonia dasyantha...the burning is not from cold but pre-existing transplant shock. It was planted in December!! Next to no cold damage at all??? The Philodendron crassinervium next to it melted. Foxtail seed that sprouted last August

This thread is just to document, trial and error.. Got a couple sprouts after about 8 weeks... sitting on a heat mat in a plastic container in peat moss/perlite/hydroton. A little mold has been picked out by hand and sprayed with hydrogen peroxide. There may be a few more that are buried but I don't want to poke around too much.

Additional cold hardy palm species to discuss? 1 2

Just noticed that Fairview has a number of palms rated zone 8b or colder that I had not contemplated until now: Trithrinax brasiliensis var. brasiliensis , Wodyetia bifurcata, Thrinax radiata, Sabal miamiensis, Livistona benthamii ‘Golden Form” , Sabal mauritiiformis , Brahea moorei, Dypsis decaryi, Dypsis carlsmithii, Chamaedorea costaricana, Ceroxylon ventricosum, Ceroxylon quindiuense, Brahea sarukhanii , Brahea dulcis (including a blue form). Any thoughts on any of these? I suspect that many are not as hardy as this nursery asserts, but some likely are. Haven't seen much discussion of most of these though-- so here's the chance to get talking!!

Green Phoenix sylvestris?
by Pee Dee Palms- 7 replies

So a nearby nursery here in Myrtle Beach usually carries a few Phoenix sylvestris and this one particularly caught my eye. For whatever reason, this palm seems MUCH more green than the usual silvery color most P. sylvestris have. Anyone know what causes this? Genetics, a disease, light intake?

Bought this supplement a few weeks ago. I was st a high end farm supply that mainly dealt with Hemp farmers. I was telling him I raised palm trees and the like micronutrients he then showed me this product. I've used it weekly on my plants inside. Seems like they have been doing pretty good. Just wanted to share.

Just some pics of how the washingtonias look around town as we start to warm up coming into spring. This is after freezing rain and 19F. First pic is of my robusta. I live just west of the intracoastal waterway about 8 miles from the coast. It has a good amount of burn. Second pic is of a filibusta in my neighborhood. Looks like nothing happened. Last pics are of what looks like robusta to me but the petioles are very green so that can't be the case. It also looks unfazed

Finally found the Jubaea x Queen, for anyone interested! I know I heard some people say they were looking when I originally posted about this hybrid. But there is a very limited supply found by a trusted resource. 20gal, only 10 of them, likely the last 10 and 7 still available. Hoping to help this individual fill the orders. I can PM the contact, to serious inquiries, as this is a collectors palm and priced accordingly. edit: this is in the PNW area (Seattle)

HELP! One of my Palms is not growing
by scott barr- 2 replies

Hi, I'm new to the forum and would really appreciate any advice. I have two windmill palms (apologies for incorrect naming!) in my front garden, one os thriving but one is not. I bought them around 3 years ago from a garden centre, they were both healthy with plenty of fronds. As you can see, one does not have any developed fronds with stems, it seems to be sprouting new growth but the fronds just don't have stems. They both receive the same amount of natural water, wind and soil as they are around 20ft apart. Any ideas?Last pic of the healthy plant.

about Beccariophoenix alfredii Palms
by ShiYi2022- 2 replies

I have a Beccariophoenix alfredii Palm. Although I checked some information, I planted it for the first time. I want to ask you how cold tolerance is. If you have tested this variety, please tell me relevant experience. Thank you! Here are three questions. Can he survive for a short time - 5 ℃ when he is 5 years old? If the temperature stays between - 2 ~ 8℃ for a long time, do you need to put on some clothes for him to keep warm? Can you survive at this temperature without any protection? (the weather is recorded in my area)
