Kuato T. Princeps
by RJ- 9 replies

So I have this T. Princeps that is going Kuato. It has been pushing smaller and smaller fronds for some time and has recently formed a bulge on one side that appears to be attempting to push a frond or two. Not sure what’s causing this and if there is even a remedy to it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm assuming this is some sort of a Palm tree. These are growing in the island on Central Ave beside Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY. Any idea what these are? Louisville is zone 6A. They are not protected in any fashion during the winter months.

Can Sabal Minor Grow in Gravel?

Hello all, I recently decided to plant my large Sabal minor in the ground this year, and I’ve ran into a bit of a dilemma. I live close to the St. Louis area on the Missouri side, and the soil in this area is a mixture of very rich clay and rocks due to close proximity to both the Missouri and Mississippi River and the area being sort of a transition between the Great Plains the rocky Ozark region. Knowing this, I decided to dig a little deeper than normal to get rid of as many rocks in the soil as possible and then backfill with some of the natural clay. This was going relatively as planned, as many large rocks were removed, but just as I dug to the desired depth o…

T. princeps germination

I'm starting a thread to document germination of a shipment of T. princeps that arrived from Garry at coldplant.com about a month ago. These seeds were collected from the Stone Gate in China. I've discovered that typically these seeds take quite a long time to germinate compared to other Trachycarpus and they tend to germinate over a long period of time. Because of this I'm trying something different. I will be attempting to jumpstart germination in a sealed jar by keeping them moist and providing a day/night temperature cycle. I kept them in the refrigerator for a month, then soaked them for two days before removing the fruit. They have been rinsed and drained.…

Date seedling - what to expect?
by Manalto- 0 replies
This date seedling (probably from a 'Medjool') has been in the ground for three winters, the first two unprotected, surviving on rainfall. (I'm not a date sadist; I was away. Now, it's getting the attention it deserves.) As my title asks, what is the typical growth habit of a date palm? I've been told dates don't come true from seed (which makes me wonder how named varieties are propagated) and that some date species have a tendency to sucker. Will it be a shaggy mess? A stately specimen? Unpredictable?

Trachy seeds arrived from the UK. Courtesy of @Vic I got the permit for seed importation just to make sure they didn't get confiscated in customs. Going to use my "jumpstart method" to geminate them.

Shifting Hardiness Zones
by knikfar- 7 replies
I'll start by saying I know hardiness zones have to be taken with a grain of salt because they don't account for duration of cold and are based on average lows, not low temps experienced in vortex winters. But I did read a NYT article that said hardiness zones are moving 13 miles north every decade. Looking at the attached hardiness zone map of my area, from 2012, anyone think I can safely say I'm zone 8a vs 7b? My house is marked by the red star.

Yeah yeah, growing these from seeds is futile, but at 4.00$ a packet, why not. The surprise is top left corner, little bugger was this crawling.

So I ordered a Sabal Tamaulipas, a Sabal blackburniana, and a Sabal miamiensis. I mixed up the tags when I received them so I don’t know which is which. I’m thinking this is the Tamaulipas but I’ve never seen curled fronds before. Is this normal?

This is my 10 year oldish Kashmir Mazari. If you look up at the top of the fronds, you can see a giant inflorescence snaking it's way up top. It's the first meristem to go to flower. Also, just to the left of my friend Juan, you can see my avocado tree that supports three varieties through grafting. Pretty cool to have a fruiting avocado north of I-20.

Hello everyone, I recently purchased this potted Sabal minor. Just wanted to here your guy’s opinion on if this thing will flower this year. Is it big enough? Does it being in a pot effect this? If it does flower, when should I see the stalk coming up?

Silver Queen might just be real
by Pee Dee Palms- 1 follower

This Silver Queen I have endured multiple nights in the 20s with frost, while being in a pot. It completely lost all of its foliage after being destroyed by a frost, which was then followed by a thunderstorm. After all of that, I surely thought the thing was dead. After all of the fronds being annihilated, it still had it's spear. I went out one day a few months ago and decided I would tug on the spear to see if it would have a spear pull. Sure enough, as I very gently pulled on the spear, it slid right out. I tore back some of the old petioles and didn't see any sign of life. I decided that I would throw the plant away the next day. The next day rolls around and I comple…

Sabal palmettos in Colorado Springs
by Palmphile- 2 followers

Hello everyone, so I haven’t seen a lot of coverage of this nature defying experiment but some of the In n Out burger chain restaurants that are new to Colorado have installed the iconic crossed palm trees at some of their locations such as this one of Constitution Ave. in Colorado Springs (Zone 5b\6a). These Sabal palmettos appear to have large gauge pipe heating cables rapped around the trunk and close to the crown. I’m also told they have coiled heat cables in the ground around the roots. They are left completely out in the open, and appear to have been planted in October 2021 (which I think is a terrible time). I don’t know the specific minimum temperature they endure…

Root rot?
by donnacreation- 1 follower

I'm concerned 2 Pindo palms I planted 15 yrs ago have root rot. Not knowing any better, I planted them on a flood plain. They grew at a much faster rate than those I planted in well drained soil. I noticed last summmer that the emerging fronds on one planted in full sun were stunted - perfectly formed but much smaller than the older fronds. The palm produced many fruit pods that I cut away to promote growth. By August I was sick of the heat and let them grow and produce fruit. I just noticed this morning, much to my horror and grief, another that I planted in shade (also about 15 yrs ago) was also producing stunted, smaller fronds. As the pics show, the fronds are…

Trachycarpus Adventitious Roots

I have a T.fortunei, 20 years in the ground. Over time, it has developed approximately 8-inches of adventitious root zone. Is it ok to build up the soil a few inches at the base of the trunk?
