Livistonia Chinensis Survivors in Zone 8b Texas?

What percentage survived 5F or thereabouts? I have one tall one left. Survived 4F unprotected and took full force of weather. 3 others survived too. Did better than Washingtonia percentage wise for me. It got beat up this winter from 22F wind and ice this year, but it did have a nice crown by last year. I expect it to look good by late summer. Not sure if the trunk will end up with damage. But I like the curve it developed at base.

Since I ended up with a few extra Butia x “Litoralis” Queen Mules. I was thinking about doubling up two 4x10s into a 5gal. I’ve seen some double Mules and would hopefully turn out nice in a few years and not one kill the other. Yay or Nay?

I found this growing at Well-Spring Retirement Community in Greensboro, NC. My first thought was that a resident must’ve planted it - but it’s in a weird location (full shade behind some bushes). I spoke to the head horticulturist and he said it just came up volunteer and has been growing there for several years. He believes there must’ve been palmetto seed in a load of mulch they put out. Either way, definitely pretty cool to see one popping up this far from its native range.

Needle Palm Spear Pull Recovery

Hey All, My Needle Palm spear pulled in March and I’ve been liberally treating with copper fungicide and did peroxide after the initial pull. Saw 0F in Z6. Today there is good news! I’ve been checking every week or so and no sign of life in the main trunk until today. The suckers all survived and are growing already. Don’t give up on your spear pull victims! Nate

All of the postings I see on here come from the West Coast regarding Jubeas. I know nothing about these palms. I’m guessing the West Coast is probably the best climate for a Jubea but has anyone tried growing one in the South? would it do well in a hot and humid environment? Does it need certain requirements to be happy? Is it a solid 8b palm?

Anyways, Trachycarpus Nanus and Trachycarpus Princeps both 20g, the nanus was said to be mid teens age and is about 3ft. Vashon Island 8b/9a. Good looking palms I’d say.

I spent spring break down in the Sunset Beach/Ocean Isle area with some of my buddies and I saw a surprising number of large Washingtonias and even a few CIDP. I didn’t get pictures of everything but here are a few examples. My friends thought I was crazy for stopping to take pictures of random palm trees lol Big hybrid: CIDP: A more robusta dominant hybrid: Possibly pure filifera? These aren’t uncommon at all but this was one of the tallest butias I saw around. Obviously very old: Bonus pictures - pittosporum in bloom, loquat, and some really old pal…

Cincinnati palms

Hello all! I live in Cincinnati area and I have a great interest in hardy palms! I myself have planted needle palms and some sabal minor " McCurtain" in my own yard. I also have found some established needle palms planted in a restaurant parking lot. I spoke to the owner of the place and he said that they were planted in about 2009 and never receive winter protection. I am also aware that there is a needle palm that is growing back from the roots at Mt St Joseph University after being cut down by mistake last spring. It apparently was planted in the year 2000 and does not and has never received any special protective measures. I am also aware of some needle palms across …

Queen variations

Noted some differences between my Santa Catarina Queens and Uruguay Queens. To start the color (different source so don’t read too much into that maybe nutrients) SCQ darker deeper green while UQ is more neon, bright. SCQ has long, thinner, droopy, arching leafs with not much ridges, UQ is erect shorter leaves and has prominent ridges much stiffer to the touch. And the trunk, and petioles on the SCQ are clean and green just a ridge of the fibrous papery edge. UQ are very much more of the fibrous material, it’s basically covering the trunk. They are clearly different almost in every way, not clue as to what this means but I took these notes and thought I’d share.
